The praise is for the gameplay, not the story or characters. The story is full of holes and bullshit, and the characters are forgettable at best, or outright assholes they try to frame as sympathetic at worst. Approach it like Minority Report, Timecop, or Looper; a mindless action flick that makes overtures towards being cyberpunk and high minded philosophy, but it doesn't even take scratching the surface for everything to stop making sense. I mean, shit, the writer gets basic cyberpunk terminology and references wrong all the fucking time.

I got my friend to play this today. Played it ages ago but did anyone play it and can talk about it? The setting dark gloomy mountain village in rural areas works so well.. Games usually never fail to deliver in such a setting.

If 'getting cucked' is the main dealbreaker between playing a VN or not then I'd be hesitant to recommend it to you, but I wouldn't say there's a lot of NTR in Biniku no Kaori. One bad end is particularly memorable, but other than that, I can't remember anything.

Not him, and I won't get into specifics since you should probably just make your own opinion after playing it, but it's a blatant lie and a clear display of ignorance to think that most people only like the gameplay of the baldr series. Just take a quick glance at EGS and you'll see the praise for the story is enormous.

Finished Newton to Ringo no Ki. Well, this was a mindbogglingly boring experience.

Neither the plot concerning time travel nor the past's struggles with its generic main villain who solely exists to be a bad guy, or bland character drama stemming from people not talking to each other enough are very good. All the characters are very forgettable. Side routes are just an excuse to have H-scenes for non-main heroines and their plot usually involves the protagonist stopping to do what he’s supposed to be doing and choosing to stay with a girl he suddenly decides to like on the spot (future be damned), which he arbitrarily doesn’t do in Alice’s route despite ALREADY achieving his main goal of fixing the future as clearly evidenced by the science magazine, no doubt for contrived drama points because the last route has to have contrived drama. Alice's route is quite literally the same as Haru or Emmy's routes but with extra drama. Alice herself as a character, despite being the main heroine doesn’t receive enough limelight or character development either due to not exactly being an active participant in the plot because the protagonist’s cadre decides to keep her in the dark about time travel and their endeavors to not fuck up the past more, and the romance is very sudden in her route as well.

There's also some very arbitrary use of time travel mechanics and outright plot holes. It’s evident the writer didn’t bother enough to keep things consistent. For example right from the start the protagonist and his childhood friend use a science magazine they brought from the future to keep account of how much their actions in the past are affecting the future since its contents change retroactively depending on how much they’re fixing the shit they caused, and another letter later in the story uses a similar function. Apparently in this universe, for some reason only written material brought from the future changes retroactively in respect to past’s changes, nothing else does and there's no explanation for it. Another much bigger plot hole is Lavi’s time travel hijinks. After her first time travel to save her mother she explains and shows that a new Lavi keeps existing and the original time traveler who returns loses their place, because there will be the one that didn’t time travel who experienced the new past vs. the other one who did and returned to present. Alright so far but then she travels a SECOND TIME at the end of her route to help Shuuji, which somehow DOESN’T result in a third Lavi who time traveled the first time to save her mother, but didn’t a second time (i.e. the Lavi in her own route). I guess that Lavi just magically poofed away?

Lavi in general was a criminally missed big opportunity of a more interesting character because she actually fucking does something in the story, her route is the only one that has some relevance to main plot and where the drama at the end makes a semblance of sense without being a totally contrived asspull like fucking plague rats or Emmy being Alice's sister out of nowhere, even managing to evoke an ounce of emotion out of me. It’s also the only side route that you’re forced to play through. Plus there’s her mysterious mother who even the other characters theorize about, but the person in question is left completely unexplained and only exists to provide a convenient vital plot item. I actually expected some kind of an additional surprise true route afterwards back in the future wrapping some of this shit up, but no. Especially since the game even bothered to give contemporary clothing for all the past characters, which makes me wonder if the devs in early development also intended to have an extended last arc taking placing in the future.

But perhaps I’m complaining too much about a lightweight bakage where Isaac Newton is replaced with a generic twintail genius loli? Well no. I could forgive the game if it indeed was mainly a comedy like the silly premise makes it out to be, but the boring plot-holed serious main story starring generic characters always takes the main seat and not even the few rare bits of average humor salvage it, so I couldn't recommend this game to anyone looking for a good plot, good humor or a good charage. Only good thing about this game were the semi-funny insert "song" videos in each route.

I'm pretty sure there were at least 4 different unique Lavis by the time the game ended.

The Lavi that traveled away by ship with her mother.
The Lavi that went back in time to save her mother (who branches into becoming the two different mentioned below Lavis).
The Lavi (who was from a failed future where Shuuji chose her) that kept a eye on Alice when she was in the library working on a invention that could help Haru.
The route Lavi that went back in time at the end of her route.

Kinda confusing thinking about it now after some time has passed since I read it, but there was already a third Lavi in her own route that was from a future where Shuuji also chose her, and she ended up traveling back in time to where there was already a current route Lavi. That Lavi and the Lavi that went back in time to save her mother were implied to be working together and posed as each other from time to time.
The Lavi that went back in time at the end of the route stopped the creation of the Lavi that observed Alice by going back to a time where there was only the boat Lavi and First Time Travel Lavi(who becomes those two Lavis that were working together in Lavi route.) So in conclusion there are still three Lavis by the end but there were four unique Lavis total. The time travel Lavis just pose as a singular Lavi throughout the rest of the story, switching places from time to time. While one Lavi is pretending to be the original Lavi, the other Lavi is hidden away in the secret room in the lab behind the book cupboard that was mentioned like once during the story.

Just finished https://vndb.org/v20591, would recommend to anyone who liked any of the previous games in the series. Improvements to story and characters across the board just like the last remake, except this time the main heroine isn't the single worst character in the entire franchise. The larger story issues were kept in, again just like the last remake, but I still enjoyed myself.

The side routes however shouldn't be taken very serious. They are cute little "what if?" stories. I don't mind that, as I'm not someone who needs big routes for all characters. In fact, I prefer it like it is in Newrin. I wouldn't mind, if they didn't need to exist for porn reasons, but that's like a general complaint I have with the current industry. Nothing should need to exist only for porn reasons in eroge that aren't nukige, but alas.

Theres not really a choice system in NewRin. Basically one decision brings you on a heroine route most of the time. Thats as bland as it gets for this kind of game.

The porn comes kind of late in the game and even after doing it the character is still called virgin and doesn't refute it. It's confusing as to why he's not proud of losing his v-card to one of these beauties...

Also do you think that the characters are airheads?

Yeah the drama could've been solved by just telling Newton how she could find out about gravitation. I feel the game just disregards that the characters are from the future, believe everything they say and could just form future as they want by telling the small scientist lolis about all the future developments. Instead they all stay shut for...fuck all unexplained reasons and it doesn't make sense.

The erotic scenes are also extremely vanilla. Handholding after waking up for example, so its only for people who enjoy a cute lovestory, but they only display that in bed and give small hints while with the others. The characters even catch them after having sex and barely talk about it or congratulate Shuuji. Alice stops calling him a virgin at this point, but yea its weird,

The game looks awesome, sounds awesome but the plot is a joke and the drama superficial at best. I wonder how eops will react when they buy the localized versions tomorrow,

You just mentioned the points which I didn't criticize. I really appreciate how Laplacian gives everyone their little cutesy and twist. Newton being a twintail loli because women weren't appreciated in science at this point of time is a concept that I haven't seen yet. Also the japanese girl that can't get back into Japan and turns into a huge weeb and the character that has to measure everything. Every character has their little unique twist to them which makes the unique.

The writing is very good and the main gets good pussy even though its vanilla most of the time. But the whole concept of abandoning time and the wellbeing of the world for a girl you love when they established chaos theory and time paradoxes causing problems beforehand just feels bad. It's like the characters have no sense of tact and priorities and the main is very self-centric.

I wrote this already, but sometimes the game tells you things ONCE, and never again. I know that's hella untypical for eroge, but you gotta pay attention. It's one of the few games out there, where it doesn't feel like the writer thinks you are a total moron, because everything is explained a million times, so you don't have to think anymore. (in reality it's most likely for padding reasons though)

What would you say are VNs with good pacing?
Like, I really enjoyed the first half of Utawarerumono because the pacing was perfect. Not too fast, but also not needlessly drawn out. Started the second game and the pacing way slower, which is pretty disappointing.
So I'm looking for more games with a nice pacing.

I cannot give you exact titles but search for games that you can read in a good all-nighter or something. Usually 50h games tend to stretch plotpoints far too long, which you the opposite of what you asked for and 30h titles, which are plot driven often have an exposition that lasts too long and have too many characters. Games around the 5-12 hour mark may work perfectly and you can sort for that on vndb just fine.

It's the way I would recommend. The remakes expand the main story for the routes but keep the major plot points and endings the same, and the side heroine events from the original SKM are kept in almost word for word in the remakes, just with extra events on top. The remakes really are just the original routes, but with more stuff, so if you can there's no reason at all to not just skip SKM completely. I can think of things the remakes did better or did the same but I can't think of anything they did worse.

You could argue that SKM is still worth reading until they do Shu but that should be within a year so still not worth bothering. If you go into Moeshoudan and Eiyuutan it might feel a little weird since a bunch of characters won't be there and for Moeshouden the art reverts but yeah, I'd still say that if you are looking to get into the series Kakumei is the best starting point even though it's the most recent release.

I don't get why やくざ is censored in SubaHibi. I hear that word faily often in anime and manga so I find it strange that it's censored in an eroge. Never seen it censored in any other eroge either

Time and time again, he writes himself into a corner where the solution is the protagonist helplessly staring while literal magic resolves things. Entire routes are resolved by literal magic coming out of nowhere and casting the deus ex machina spell and revealing a specific magic power that appears and is used literally nowhere else in the story. One of the big mysteries (how/why Kou and Sora fell in love) that it spends four fucking routes pussyfooting around also ends up being handwavey AIs are magic bullshit. Hiei throws around cyberpunk and computer terms inaccurately and haphazardly, often using them to mean incorrect things.

A third of the game is stuck in flashback highschool harem bullshit, where it constantly sends you after every mission for the first four routes as mandatory timeouts, usually as a timeout from the timeout, and then it forces you to replay all of it, some scenes for the fourth or fifth fucking time.

Every single heroine's dramatic arc is that she feels unworthy of being in love with the protagonist and their 'development' is Kou realizing that they're right all along. And since there's no real choices to be made, this is all done via simply spontaneously changing his mind about who he wronged in the past. None of them ever grow as characters or even do jack shit. It's a constant retcon of Kou's character based not on his actions, but by what flashbacks he happens to have. If you've played Force, you'd think that would've been by design and they were using it intentionally, but it's never addressed.

All of this leads to a final route where everything just straight up becomes magic. Kou has magic powers. Magic fixes literally everything. Kou creates a literal spirit bomb from the hopes and dreams of other people. In a supposedly cyberpunk game.

The gameplay is what makes it palatable. It would not survive on its own without it.

Ended oretsuba prelude, I really wanted to like it but the writing style is such a turn off, like yeah I can endure the obscure references they use in the dialogues, the innatural level of obscure vocabulary in EVERY character (like the mc that is supposed to be a delinquent using words that I wouldn't say hard but words that one mostly only see in books just destroy the character and disturbs me) and the dialects that I have never seen before, but the fucking monologues, goddammit like the characters start to think w/e shit they want and make the story advance so slow, and the majority is superfluous and boring(the last is subjective) made me the reading a chore more than a pleasure, it's just a major turn off, and ironically the extra scenario with the tenchou pov was the most enjoyable as it omitted the endless amount of monologues.

So I want to ask, in the main game there is still a hell of monologues(I know it's obvious it'll maintain the writing style but I want to confirm it still)? And the story is worth the read? As the heroines I saw in prelude at least weren't so high level to expect something from them.
As I already ended prelude it would be a waste to no play the main game but the writing just make it so hard to me to continue it.

After really liking Hyakki Ryouran no Yakata (minus one route), I tried Kiriya Hakushakuke no Roku Shimai. Hoping for something similar, so to say. Art, music and such quickly gave a similar atmosphere and the story seemed interesting at first as well. But the game ended up being just a nukige.

Hyakki Ryouran had a pretty nice story where even most side characters had their own agendas and goals, important "connections" to other characters of the cast and so on. The protagonist got thrown into a big web of something that had be unraveled. The other game however quickly showed a much more linear stance. No overarching plot, instead you'd have a single small thing every route. The heroines remained flat and uninteresting, in part because you wouldn't really see much of them outside of h-scenes anyway.

In a way Kiriya Hakushakuke no Roku Shimai felt like a doujin game, with how it was written. Always progressing just like the writer wants to, no time to bother with things like "does it make sense for this character". I especially loved how the protagonist was all confused and "why?" about how the heroines are fine with the weird "ceremony", and a bit later was all confused and "why?" when a girl appears that isn't fine with it. Things also get conveniently forgotten and/or ignored, as if something more was planned but scrapped. Someone died and you can't call the police? Okay. Never mentioned again.
But seeing how the last route you can play is essentially just an ero collection, it's pretty obvious what happened. They probably wanted to do something more, but ended up giving up on that idea pretty fast. A shame. And it's not like the ero was particularly noteworthy either. Hyakki Ryouran had at least a bunch of fun scenarios fitting to the yakata setting, like pic related.

Hyakki Ryouran has so much story, it's definitely not a nukige. It's also mostly well done. There is a lot of ero, and most CG are unfortunately used for that as well (there are a few scenes that could've really used one..), but the plot can stand on its own. A decent chunk of ero is also part of the story.
Kiriya Hakushakuke no Roku Shima on the flipside is basically a nukige.

So it depends. If you don't want so much ero, it's obviously not a good idea. But well. There's always ctrl. Hyakki Ryouran has a bunch of ero you don't want to skip, but it has even more that is very very skipable, as it's essentially just vanilla stuff without any meaning other than being vanilla lewds with the heroine(s).

Outside of the mom route he should be fine. Proactive protagonists don't fit too well into yakata games though. I've seen that in Kiriya Hakushakuke no Roku Shimai. It basically just resulted into heavy weirdness, because he had to still be in a yakata game (as in question all the weird sexual things or ceremonies, trying to figure out what's going on), and yet was sexually proactive. It makes no sense. Would a dude who immediately hits on any girl he sees and wants sex really start to think about a ceremony asking him to get girls pregnant? Wouldn't he just be like "lucky~~~~"? The protag was a mess.

A more quiet and less proactive protag makes a lot more sense. It also will give you the feeling of getting drawn into the setting a lot more. You aren't spearheading into it. You get sucked into it. Like you fall in some spiderweb and get trapped with no escape.
But. BUT. It's not like the protag remains quiet and such in all routes all the time. Hyakki Ryouran a good game. It really is.

It seems like doujin studios rarely draw stuff anymore. They moved on to photorealistic backgrounds. I saw that with 2236A.D from Chloro and this title.

Maybe background artists are too expensive?

Rikka is one of the better routes in Hoshi Ori, up there with Sora and Marika imo. But she definitely changes into a bit of a moeblob in the later parts of her route.

Even with that downside though her birthday scene was one of my favorites in all of Hoshi Ori.

How often do you need to look up words anyway? If its a lot just pass it through chiitran that way you just mouse over and it will give you the definitions, a lot less stopping to search it in a dictionary.

In all honesty though. As long as we talk about untranslated JP VNs, like this thread is kinda there for, it's okay. What's currently happening is NOT okay however. This thread is not about the language, how to install a game, random tools or whatever. I don't understand what's so hard about that. I don't need several days long discussions about a game. I just want more people to write down their impressions of what they read. Be it after the whole game. Be it after every route. Just don't post an image with "LUL" or "SO CUTE" or whatever every 20 minutes.
The post size limit is perfect for this as well, as it means you won't get a big review, but a nice compressed idea of what the game is about or how good it may be. Sometimes someone else has played the game already and may post something about it in return. Sometimes that won't happen. This is how the thread more or less worked in the past, too.

All what however happens is people trolling or spamming unrelated things, with other people getting angry at that, but not contributing anything good for the thread either. That can't be making things better.

That actually applies to every single cyberpunk work with a true AI(pretty much all of them,) making it sort of a "reverse-fantasy" genre.
In fantasy, things that aren't supposed to happen actually do happen, while in cyberpunk, things that ARE supposed to happen, don't.

If I had an eroge company I would establish a sub-brand that specializes in budget titles and just keep releasing them every 1-2 years, while the main brand releases one major title every 4-5 years.

the game simply disintegrated on me.
