Why do secondaries read horrible English translations? The available translations very poorly represent Nasu's writing style.

There is so much cultural nuance differences between translated text and source language text and meaning lost in the travesty of bootleg translations.

So why?

Takajun was an ESL student which is why all of the FSN translation is awkward and overtly literal. However he hated translating the sex scenes so he rushed them and as a result they're even more awkward and full of mistakes. Stuff like "educated prostitute", "feels so good that I'll vomit" or "her anus is a great nightmare" are blatant translation errors that people act as if they're representative of Nasu's writing. That's the equivalent of reading the Duwang translation of Jojo and claiming that Araki can't write.

Did anybody else feel underwhelmed by the translation of Nasu's writing for Camelot? The translations felt really standard and barebones.

So why can't you learn Japanese?

Early Nasu's writing style isn't very good to begin with, it's evident in both Tsukihime and Kara no Kyoukai. I'd rather read the English over the Japanese version for Tsukihime because it's easier to swallow and less frustrating to read in my opinion. Also being able to read the work and understanding cultural nuances of the work are two different things to someone from the outside reading it, in this case the EN->JP reader won't be able to carry that over let alone express it properly without a proper class in modern Japanese and again that wouldn't be enough. In short the answer is convenience.

Hi /tmg/, this might be stupid/autistic, but I'm confused. I've been playing Fate/Stay Night and I'm wondering, can you change routes in the course of the game in Realta Nua? I thought it would somehow not be possible, but looking at a flowchart that came with my download and what I tried out in-game, I could go into UBW from the Fate route when Rin offers an alliance on Day 4. Does the game eventually go full circle back to Fate? I'm already some days farther than that having accepted the alliance, just went back, rejected it and let it run for a bit out of curiosity, and it seems it does change the route.

tl;dr
Can you change routes within one .exe in F/SN Realta Nua?

The choice in UBW that leads back into Fate, from what I remember, inevitably results in a bad ending a couple of days later.

Because I'm tired of this condescending shilling for something which to me is only one of a few interests in fictional mediums.
Just shut up, if translations or even summaries for important things don't come up, that is fate.
And more importantly machine translating is getting better, though it will be hard to pick up subtle nuances in the writing, but even that is hard to pick up for those who have it as a second language.

Not >>19565420, but again, all the reasons given have been based on misconceptions and laziness rather than a rational measurement of time and energy. It only takes 30 minutes a day to begin reading within a year. Japanese lessons in a classroom environment are notoriously butchered and worthless. And machine translation definitely isn't going to match the abilities of a fluent speaker within the same time frame. If not, I speak from experience when saying that it can make just about everything more enjoyable than a translation. To me at least, going back to something I once read in English genuinely feels like a completely different story. Whether one finds the learning experience fun or not depends on the person, and if they don't feel any sense of accomplishment once they begin to put learning into practice, then that's fine too.

There certainly are worthwhile reasons not to bother, though. Just to go through a few possibilities:
Is Nasu the only Japanese writer whose work you have any interest in consuming?
Is cognitively recognizing a difference in quality a substitute for actually experiencing it?
Do you care about the accuracy of the public perception of Fate/stay night and Tsukihime?
Most importantly, why do you enjoy them?

If none of that is good enough, you can just ignore the post and move on.

>> No.19569691

>>19569626
I just think the discussion is worthless unless somebody is actually making the decision to do it.
Those who lack the capacity to look at the work as written aren't going to complain if somebody acknowledges where the translation is flawed.
But if nobody does, then you get the misconceptions.
Ultimately this can be fixed through those who do know better making sure the true interpretation is known.
This burden shouldn't be on the English only readers.

>> No.19569720

And If you want my reason why I enjoy TM, for the most part I'm quite indifferent, it all goes down to a single character, without them I wouldn't care about TM and care even less about general Japanese media.

>> No.19569907

>>19569691
That's completely right, but we're not quite there yet. In the meantime, every time a person reads the mirror-moon translation of FSN, the issue becomes harder to rectify. I appreciate that mirror-moon has done more for the western fanbase than anyone else, but the problem isn't even that it's too literal, it's just broken.

It's like ufotable's secondaries and the pure Zerofags on Reddit and /a/. There's so much mixed up or otherwise missing, but the average person is predisposed to prefer the option they were first exposed to regardless of other factors. Of course, I can't exactly claim to be doing my own translation, though.

There are many places which have done plenty of work to help collate things together to make it easier to understand for everyone, on top of getting things straight.
But as you said, we are still well off where we should be.
Efforts to fix this are only half baked, let alone the many TL disasters over the years.
Of course I'm in no position to complain, I try to pick up what I can and I tend to say questionable things so I can be corrected.

>The core of the Moonlight Lost Room takes place inside a dream of three people who are dreaming, plus one who isn't. The one who doesn't dream (Olga), the living one who dreams (Ritsuka), the dead one who dreams (Lev), and the "yet unknown" who dreams (Unrevealed).

I'm honestly hoping that FGO making money in the West will open someone's eyes to the fact that there is a market for the source material and that it will be handled by a translation team with a good editor.

Unfortunately, you've also touched on something that occurred to me recently, the parts of the Western fanbase that care more about FGO on a "shallow" level or the anime adaptions are unwilling to demand good translations. They're content with what has been done over the years and the summaries they can read on Reddit. Even worse, FGO being translated into English has brought out people who are exactly as you describe, people who deride the English translation not on any factual basis, but because it differs from the fan translations they've read.

I'm not dissatisfied with how the backgrounds and most of the character designs except Arc look so far.
We've yet to see any CGs though, I wonder how consistent he can remain in those without re-using poses and shit.
Although all things considered, as much as his samefaces are annoying, the VN will definitely look better overall than Tsukihime or FSN, and I'll be satisfied with that if it delivers in every other aspect.
I think Mahoyo will still look better in the end, since it's shorter and by a better artist.

I mean, his faces are pretty doll-like and samey in terms of the eyes, it's true, but I don't think it's as overt as Takeuchi's copy-pasting, since he literally does stuff at the exact same angle ad naseum and literally reuses sketches over and over. Koyama's pretty good about variance in terms of expressions, poses, and bodies -- that sort of thing. And speaking of bodies, he's far, far better at drawing appealing ones than Takeuchi ever will be, in my opinion. It's no doubt that Koyama's work is pretty inconsistent, though. I mean, just look at that abortion he turned in for FGO recently. Looked amateur as fuck.

>Her back story is really cool though.

Ciel was cool as hell, with Ciel running up the wall and attacking from the fucking CEILING and Shiki can’t help but be honest and think of it as “charmingly beautiful”. Shiki and Ciel are literally like a married couple from the very start of the VN.

The umbrella scene where Ciel finds Shiki in the rain and he has nowhere to go, so she takes him to her apartment and help him get back to his regular self. That scene is also triggered by having Shiki face reality instead of denying that it happened and having him believe that it was just a dream. It’s actually very meaningful, but people tend to brush it off. Shiki decides that their time together is still valuable to him, even if it was a lie.

When Shiki threatened Ciel with rape and she glares at him, then proceeds to sarcastically reply to him. Then she fucking helps his useless ass to battle Roa.

Ciel was a secretive mask-upon-mask character and becomes unpredictable because of how often she switches between them even though Ciel acts completely independent from Shiki and the rest of Tsukihime's plot.

Well, I mean, of course.

I sometimes wonder if the Ciel haters aren't secondaries or even tertiaries. It's like they didn't read the VN and instead just watched the anime or read the manga or something.

In the VN, Ciel is consistently the only character that is shown to be competent, assured, and benign. She is consistently the only character Shiki can trust. She is, consistently, the only character that knows what she's doing, and is willing to help Shiki. When Shiki is babbling around like the retard he so often is in the VN, Ciel is always here to reassure him, help him get back on his feet, and is just a great human bean in general.

Type-Moon has not released anything by themselves as a company since Mahoyo, every single project since has been a joint with either Aniplex, Sony, Kadokawa or Marvelous. Not that's anything bad, I enjoyed CCC and a few of the manga out there like Prisma and LNs like Strange Fake but I really want something new like when Nasu made Tsuki no Sango it doesn't even need to be a part of an existing IP. It's not helping that with GO, TM can just shit out low effort content and make bank so they don't have any incentive to make anything new and if it is something new it's usually a bad rehash of something already made like Last Encore.

I was really surprised by the amount of choices given for what is a small project from a small team, and the overall impressions of openendedness. I am not a virgin when it comes to VN, far from it, but it is surprising how the narrative unfurls almost in-unison with the player's choices, at least at the start.

Maybe it was just me, or I lucked my first playthrough somehow, but it was a weird and gripping pseudo-realism.

The story was alright. I would have liked less twists that weren't properly foreshadowed and often felt like they were just there for the shock value. Soul-link soul-twins murdered but then it was a reincarnation but then you weren't you but you-you want to kill you and is also the big bad. The fact that Tsukihime is smaller than Fate means there is less time to properly appreciate each twist. It can feel like a rollercaster at time, especially when you do Ciel's route first.

I liked Shiki in the beginning, which I felt was a somewhat refreshing character, but by the end of the first route I wanted to punch him in the face and it never stopped. I think this is less an issue with the character than an issue with the plot, which forces him to be completely stupid, to make all the bad choices, to be paranoid and useless, never express his concerns to the rightful people around him, stroll in the vampire infested city at night, and generally acts like a fucking moron. Shiki in Tsukihime is possibly the worst Nasuverse main character I have ever seen, and far worse than Shirou at his worst.

Arc is alright, it's more her chemistry with Shiki which is great. I didn't get Ciel until late, but when I finally understood her archetype I fell in love with her. The sister is great, though more because of a general good archetype than because she's well done. The maid's stories are the best, but then when it comes to it it is a rollercoaster of bad Shiki decisions, weird plot twists, characters being unhelpful, and retarded scenes.

Sacchin was alright tho

They do have an incentive, though. It's called "appreciating your fans". You know, the people who got them where they are today. Old fans get treated like shit by Type Moon, comparatively even Persona fans are treated considerably better. You'd be hard pressed to find a company that treats the long term fans with as much contempt as Nasu/Type Moon does, and even harder pressed to find a fanbase that is so reciprocative to being treated by it. If anyone had a brain they'd have stopped buying and consuming their media years ago until they released Tsukihime R. Now, Tsukihime R is dead and never going to happen, and boycotts like the above are irrelevant because the old fans have been replaced.

Trash gameplay, story is very mediocre, rates are shit making the experience an unpleasant one, and it has taken up all of the focus (despite not getting much content, so in other words, is an excuse for us to not get anything) from other things. The money it makes could and should have been used to launch a real multiverse with multiple projects going at once, big, full scale projects in line with any other main entries.

Instead, we get cheap spin offs. If you look at the other projects they're doing, let's see how they're coping:

>Strange Fake
Delayed heavily. Being stretched out to sell more volumes, probably going to be ruined completely at some point.

>Prisma Illya
Has launched with 12 page chapters etc.

>Fragments
Drama CD has been delayed for nearly a full year by the time it eventually comes out

And that's basically it. Grand Order has made the entirety of Type Moon essentially give up on the projects they were currently running. It hasn't been redirected back into Grand Order, it's made them just stop providing content. Things that were already in delay hell are now dead in the water because of this. And they get away with it, because Grand Order lets them drip feed content slowly but continuously. By all accounts, as a game it's fine for a time waster. But it's more than that. It not only makes enough for them to hire so many people they'd get through everything they need to get through really quickly and pump out loads of actual proper content, it makes enough for them to aslo pump out side shit with it too. Instead, what it does it actively detract from everything else with Type Moon, to the point where basically everything else that isn't Grand Order is either delayed heavily or unofficially cancelled. It's quite marvelous how a game so successful can become not just the centre piece for the whole company, but actual ruin the development of everything else when it should be doing the opposite.

That's why Grand Order is terrible. Because it's killed the whole franchise. Once Grand Order is dead, is anyone going to still be around for them? Why should they? I for one am not prepared to have waited 15+ years for Tsukihime remake only for them to pretend it never existed for 5, re-announce it and then pretend it never existed again, and then, when their milking dries up, come back asking me to have faith in them. That's gone, the trust is dead. At this point, I'm just waiting for Nasu to come out and say that he's pulled the plug on Tsukihime R because it isn't "commercially viable". That's when I'll know for sure that this company is finished.

>> No.19599246

>>19599049
Them retiring is not really the issue at all. If they want to stop making content, then that's up to them. My point was to say, that if after Grand Order when their popularity dies down and their sales decline, if they're looking for the core fans, you know, the ones that Nasu used to say he appreciated, to be there to support them, I'm saying I'm not going to be there until they prove that they still care about making quality content.

As for not being Japanese, or not paying for the game, both of these are irrelevant to the point. I only speak for myself. That said, I can tell you for a fact that there are plenty of long-time fans of Type Moon, in Japan, who are not happy about the delays these other things have had. Not just Tsukihime and Mahoyo. Of course they would be. When you've been waiting for something for 10 years, and for years you've received nothing except a minimal indication that the projectis still not dead, and there are no attempts to communicate what is happening with it at all, then yeah, you're going to be annoyed. Literally every fanbase would be. I doubt there is a single Tsukihime fan happy with how the remake has been treated, unless they never cared for a remake in the first place.

And for me personally, I've imported a bunch of stuff from Type Moon over the years. Now if you're done with your shitty bait, kindly fuck off back to /fgog/ and let the adults talk about their frustrations with how they've been treated, or come up with a response that actually addresses some of these concerns.
>>19598888
I feel you, but I've ran out of excuses for the delay. Budget? Laughable now. Creative wall? More writers around Type Moon than ever, no excuse for a severe delay. Not wanting to disappoint the fans? Mahoyo proves otherwise, because that's in a similar position with none of the expectation comparatively. The only reason there isn't more is because it's more profitable to spend a little time writing some meme event for a mobile gacha game and have it sell itself, as opposed to spending weeks to months to even years writing something that would make a portion of those profits. And really, if that's what Type Moon is now, then I don't want to see an eventual remake that would be whored out into gacha form or some bullshit for the sake of making more money. It's the one reason I'm glad Tsukihime hasn't had an event in grand order yet, though I don;t have the faith in Nasu to claim that he wants to preserve it. I've no doubt within a year or two we'll have seen it in there, with no remake in sight.

>fetal alcohol syndrome
>rhino face, horrible profile shot with barely any distinguishing features of the nose, jaw, or mouth making it all mush together in an incomprehensible blend
>side mouth
I mean, this garbage Tsukihime CG from 20 years ago has less issues in that at least the nose, mouth, and jawline are all decently defined.

And that's just her face. Let's not get started on the vast proportional inconsistencies going on in this image, or the anatomy issues. Also, isn't Alter's long hair version supposed to be extremely fluffy -- in her sprite it's practically gargantuan in size, and yet here it's two shitty static strands, which, while large, are nowhere near as big as it is in her sprites. Haircut, maybe?

I don't hate her. At all. Just found her kind of boring and it didn't really help that I did her route right after Arcueid's, as there's quite a bit of repetition between the two routes. Weirdly enough I felt like Arcueid got more good scenes in Ciel's route than Ciel did in hers.

I don't hate Ciel, it's just that every other girl is better than her.

>> No.19605903

Ciel was a bland character who served no real purpose in other routes and was overshadowed in her own route. Unlike other characters she relies on gimmicks more than anything to be memorable because her story just didn't stick. When she did have personality it was either angry or lecturing, and often was getting in the way of other characters. For Melty she was somewhat relegated to a rival role for Arc but let's be realistic, Ciel is no match at all for Arc. And jump forward to Carnival Phantasm, she's basically a curry/teacher meme blob.
I don't waste my time hating Ciel because I don't care enough about her to hate her. But there's plenty to dislike.

Lol, this guy is either trolling or has lost the plot and gotten full of himself. If this is the best he can do now, then he's washed up and finished. For crying out loud, Amari is an example of everything wrong when her whole fate is left to a side material drama cd. Maybe he's just trying to save face after knowing he's fucked it all up.

Do people consider Heaven's Feel 1 better than UBW 1st cour?
I really want to love it, but there's too many little things that bug me like the Illya scenes and the Saber Alter scene. And I don't think they fully embraced the creepy factor of this part of the VN, though they did attempt to.
