Don't get too discouraged. Getting to 7s is the first wall in my opinion. And each step up after that will be exponentially harder. You'll probably be stuck on 8s for a long while. 9s are where you need a really solid grasp of the major techniques, good hand dexterity, and have chords down to a T.

Nah, it's fine if you hover after every press. Dolce mostly uses his ring finger as well.
It's just rough when you're playing stuff right below your limit where you end up using your fingers more than your arms due to lack of stamina and speed. Plus I play sitting, so that probably doesn't help.
Shouldn't be too late to switch to using pinky or both though. I didn't transition until early 12s I think. Couldn't separate them at first but now my pinky is fairly reliable.

spent the weekend at otakon, got to play iidx on a machine for the first time, also got to play popn for the first time period, immediately bought a jp ps2 and popn 14 and 12 and ordered the dao popn controller. i've heard there's not very good emulator support for popn so i guess i'll look more deeply into that once i get tired of the ps2 popn games i bought.

Started playing iidx (lr2) a few months ago and I'm stuck on 7's (can pass about 20-25% of them). I feel like my scratching is way better than it "should" be at this level, but my ability to hit the jumps/simultaneous notes (not sure what they're called in iidx, please forgive me) feels way worse than it should be. Can anyone think of some songs from iidx 10 - 21 that would be useful to practice this at that level?

Of course I'm nearly 100% sure that the actual answer is the usual "just play more," but I felt the need to vent since my progression has slowed down a bit.

For genuine arcade hardware, yeah, that's pretty good (even if it's only one 5-panel pad). However, I'm really curious as to how Impulse is gonna sell a 9-panel pad with similar sensor technology with a bar + lights at under half that price (not including shipping). Sure, the panels are slightly smaller (which triggers my autism to no end), but there's no way that that's nearly enough to cut the costs by that much. To top it off, they want them to be entirely factory-made with as little hand assembly as possible. They're way in over their heads.

It took me 2.5 months from zero to getting 10dan. After a long break I got 11dan after 2 more months of grinding on my SVSE5.

playing voltex and pop'n on the side has made me better at reading complex patterns in iidx and made my hands faster and slightly better at doing different kinds of motions that are more common in those games, but voltex doesn't test timing in the precise way that iidx and pop'n do.

voltex is mostly a "for fun" game for me, i think the high level play is too much like dance games and jubeat and stuff (ie the game doesn't measure the differences in player timing precision specifically enough so all there is to do is try to max/fc things)

The closest dance game this applies to is PIU with normal judgment but even then combo is still a major part of scoring, and even in Ranked mode combo is still meta, especially for the scarce few songs that haven't been FC'd in Ranked. This stopped being a thing in DDR the moment Marvelous timing became standard instead of locked to challenge mode.
