In English "to try doing [x]" has the connotation that that attempt will fail, or at least won't be as successful as it should.

Is this connotation not there in the "てみる" construction? I've just seen some 踊ってみた and 歌ってみた videos and they all did the 踊る and 歌う quite well, I think.

How do you guys feel about listening practice, I know you guys are all for reading more but people hardly talk about that here, I talked to a few lads who were learning through reading and they never watch anime without subtitles and if they do they get at most 60% listening comprehension, Is m*tt and the khatz right and we should watch raw anime without subs?

They didn't invent the concept of listening to a language if you want to improve at listening to a language. But no, they're wrong. The way you improve your listening is by not listening. Good question.

I started reading a little while ago and am having all the, presumably, standard beginner woes (can't tell when words end, can't recognize grammar structures etc).

I'm using the Yotsuba reading pack but am still struggling as not all the sentences are covered. I'm always worrying that I'm spending too much time on a single sentence and stuff like that. Is there anything I should know that would make the process easier (I've already installed all the relevant stuff from the guide)? it is useless for you to learn that 人 has kun readings ひと, り, と, and on readings ジン, ニン. it is useful for you to learn that 人 by itself is ひと and 二人 is ふたり and 人間 is にんげん.
don't learn kanji readings, learn words, you will pick up readings through words, you wont pick up words through readings (you will guess right sometimes but you can't rely on that especially with a tiny vocabulary)

Inflections are the only thing that are gonna keep fucking you up late game. Kanjis get much easier to remember after you know a thousand or so, onomatopoeic words become intuitive after a while, grammar gets a lot easier when your reading speed increases.
But when shit like 塞ぐ is said as 塞いで that's when you realize you have to see every word in every possible inflection before you can actually consider it learnt.

I’ve done copious hours of research to try to figure out the best path to success with learning Japanese. I have the books I need, and I’m confident with my planned track, but one thing I’ve seldom seen is how fluent exactly you should be in kana before moving on to learning your kanji.

I’ve spend the past week getting a really solid grounding in hiragana. I’m in it for the long haul, with no need to rush things along so I figure it’s important to be really confident in my kana (especially hiragana) to benefit the rest of my studying. I can easily identify all of the hiragana characters, my speed is picking up, and I can remember the stroke order when writing them, if I’m looking at the characters.

However: I can’t easily work backwards (I can translate the hiragana, but can’t easily turn things INTO hiragana), and without looking at the characters I’m poor at writing the hiragana from memory. I know that throughout my studies I’m going to keep using the hiragana, so while I’m not in any rush, I want to be efficient with my studies. E.g I’m willing to, but don’t want to spend the next week rote learning the stroke orders only to keep writing them in my ongoing studies, which would have reaped the same results.

At what point do you think it’s prudent to move on to the kanji (or whatever other path someone is taking)?

Note: I still need to learn the katakana, but I’m using the hiragana as an example, and I’m under the impression that of the two it’s more important to really have a strong grasp of hiragana.

Handwriting kana or kanji normally isn’t important, I assume you mean you can’t write it out easily from memory. That will likely get better with practice but I don’t think that will be worth the time. Better to spend the time typing kana on your computer. I have heard from people who are working in japan and living there they rarely have to hand write anything, but that’s a opinion. Some find handwriting important. When to learn kanji is pretty debatable. One path that I went is using Wanikani and start learning kanji. vocabulary on that site , and by level 10(out of 60) you can start learning grammar. This path will make it easier with grammar because you will know a lot the kanji/Vocab already. I used genki to cover some basics as well as lingodeer but still focusing on wanikani currently to get a good grasp on kanji and related vocabulary.

There’s no one correct way. Hiragana will soon be burned in your brain as you learn vocabulary words and kanji readings. Katakana is little more annoying and I tend to forget it because it’s less common in beginners vocabulary.

Hope this provides some insight, everyone will have different suggestions on what you should do. It will be a long path to being fluent. In the end it’s important that your just learning something, weather your studying vocabulary, grammar, kanji, podcasts for listening or speaking. Just keep learning something new everyday.

most kanji on a page would have to be replaced by at least two kana characters. most 200+ texts are 50% kanji. replacing kanji with kana will require 50% more space than before. therefore when they do make the transition to pure kana, they will stop being dumb about fitting everything into little squares and start squeezing all the characters together like normal people.

I have both J-J and J-E and more often than not it's less trouble having an English keyword on the back of a card because it's more concise. J-to-E is the easiest and fastest 99% of the time, but J-to-J is obviously more expansive. I'd say that the best rule is to just use J-to-E unless the definitions that you find there aren't making sense (it's very possible that the usage that you want isn't in the J-to-E dictionary) or the word isn't present. One more thing about this interview and I'll be out of your hair, sorry.

The context is that they're talking about how hard it was to improve user experience in their software. The person then says '違和感をなくすためにやっているので、その苦労は体感できないと思います（笑）。'. Is this basically a joke about how they experienced hardship so other people wouldn't have to? The use of できない is throwing me off a bit. Thanks for the help.
