This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

>In English "to try doing [x]" has the connotation that that attempt will fail, or at least won't be as successful as it should.
it can, it doesn't have to, it can just mean you will make an effort and you don't want to make any claims about how well the result will come out
>I've just seen some 踊ってみた and 歌ってみた videos and they all did the 踊る and 歌う quite well, I think.
i think it's the same as english in that it is more indirect, they don't want to be the judge of how well they did because that could come off overconfident

I started reading a little while ago and am having all the, presumably, standard beginner woes (can't tell when words end, can't recognize grammar structures etc).

I'm using the Yotsuba reading pack but am still struggling as not all the sentences are covered. I'm always worrying that I'm spending too much time on a single sentence and stuff like that. Is there anything I should know that would make the process easier (I've already installed all the relevant stuff from the guide)? Because she was doing the bullying.
>What does she mean "when I noticed I wasn't alone"?
>私一人がやっていたんじゃないのに、気づくと、その子たちやみんなから、「許せない」と言われた。
The のに here is the kind that means "despite". She didn't do it alone, but despite that, before she noticed it, everyone etc etc.
>Why is she being bullied?
Make sure to get your passive and active verbs straight.
>「ボケボケすんな!」ときついこともかなり言った──かもしれない
She wasn't told this, she said it herself, or so she believes.

to get better at reading you have to read
read anything you have motivation to read

when you struggle with a sentence for a minute move on and read more of the shit you can figure out
the only memorization bullshit worth doing is anki to connect words to their readings so that you can do even more reading
note that i said words, you're not going to be able to figure out 四字熟語 just from having memorized a bunch of kanji readings
also flash cards are used optimally to connect one piece of information to another, that means memorizing 4+ readings on a kanji card is bad

>> No.19481762

I’ve done copious hours of research to try to figure out the best path to success with learning Japanese. I have the books I need, and I’m confident with my planned track, but one thing I’ve seldom seen is how fluent exactly you should be in kana before moving on to learning your kanji.

I’ve spend the past week getting a really solid grounding in hiragana. I’m in it for the long haul, with no need to rush things along so I figure it’s important to be really confident in my kana (especially hiragana) to benefit the rest of my studying. I can easily identify all of the hiragana characters, my speed is picking up, and I can remember the stroke order when writing them, if I’m looking at the characters.

However: I can’t easily work backwards (I can translate the hiragana, but can’t easily turn things INTO hiragana), and without looking at the characters I’m poor at writing the hiragana from memory. I know that throughout my studies I’m going to keep using the hiragana, so while I’m not in any rush, I want to be efficient with my studies. E.g I’m willing to, but don’t want to spend the next week rote learning the stroke orders only to keep writing them in my ongoing studies, which would have reaped the same results.

At what point do you think it’s prudent to move on to the kanji (or whatever other path someone is taking)?

Note: I still need to learn the katakana, but I’m using the hiragana as an example, and I’m under the impression that of the two it’s more important to really have a strong grasp of hiragana.

>> No.19481780

>>19481762
Handwriting kana or kanji normally isn’t important, I assume you mean you can’t write it out easily from memory. That will likely get better with practice but I don’t think that will be worth the time. Better to spend the time typing kana on your computer. I have heard from people who are working in japan and living there they rarely have to hand write anything, but that’s a opinion. Some find handwriting important. When to learn kanji is pretty debatable. One path that I went is using Wanikani and start learning kanji. vocabulary on that site , and by level 10(out of 60) you can start learning grammar. This path will make it easier with grammar because you will know a lot the kanji/Vocab already. I used genki to cover some basics as well as lingodeer but still focusing on wanikani currently to get a good grasp on kanji and related vocabulary.

There’s no one correct way. Hiragana will soon be burned in your brain as you learn vocabulary words and kanji readings. Katakana is little more annoying and I tend to forget it because it’s less common in beginners vocabulary.

Hope this provides some insight, everyone will have different suggestions on what you should do. It will be a long path to being fluent. In the end it’s important that your just learning something, weather your studying vocabulary, grammar, kanji, podcasts for listening or speaking. Just keep learning something new everyday.

>> No.19481787

>>19481780
Thank you so much for your thoughtful, thorough response. I’d really like to be able to write kana and kanji, as that for me is part of fluency. However, I’m guessing I’ll be spending a lot of time in future with the kana, during which I’ll get the chance to write it out. I’m glad to hear from you that the hiragana will soon be burned into my memory - as that’s what I was assuming. While I’m not in a rush, I don’t want to spend weeks on something unnecessarily (I’m a major perfectionist).

I did buy RTJ, as well as Genki (and I got anki and related decks) with the plan of pursuing a hybrid approach someone else in the thread mentioned. I think figuring out the correct path is the intimidating part.

Thanks again for taking the time to help (:

It just doesn't matter. At some point you will be able to definition entries just like everything else. I have both J-J and J-E and more often than not it's less trouble having an English keyword on the back of a card because it's more concise. In the first place, it's not like you are supposed to try to strictly remember English keywords or Japanese definitions, just if you can read the word and have a gist for what it means.

J-to-E is the easiest and fastest 99% of the time, but J-to-J is obviously more expansive. I'd say that the best rule is to just use J-to-E unless the definitions that you find there aren't making sense (it's very possible that the usage that you want isn't in the J-to-E dictionary) or the word isn't present. Okay, well, matt's advice is completely anecdotal, so you shouldn't believe it at all. Only believe what logically makes sense or is based on coherent empirical evidence. Logic and empirical evidence show that there's no benefit to forcing yourself to benefit to j-j dictionaries. If you cannot read them easily, then you will not benefit from using them except in the 0.001% of cases where j-e definitions are wrong... but that error rate is far lower than the error rate of learning from definitions in the first place, and one of Matt's few coherent pieces of advice is that you learn through input, not memorization, so a 0.001% error rate for bad definitions is meaningless. all small samples are in fact equally invalid
the threshold of pure invalidity is called statistical significance
if a measurement is not statistically significant then it is equally unusable as all other statistically insignificant measurements
this is important because it means you cannot arbitrarily pick and choose among them and combine them to create one that is statistically significant
if you do not know this then you cannot say anything about probability or statistics because you literally do not know the very most basic functions of the field

lemme tell you something good

nobody will ever consider a measurement consisting of fewer than 9 out of 10 unbiased samples or 9 out of 9 consecutive unbiased samples to be statistically significant.

and that's a very low threshold of significance

do you have 9 people who are vetted by natives? do they all agree on forcing yourself to transition to j-j dictionaries? are they an unbiased sample of people vetted by natives, or did you find them at the j-j dictionary club?

i suggest you go back to the start of this discussion and you'll see nobody ever said that j-j are pointless, we just said it's use is limited when you're starting out and a lot of the time j-e would suffice

I'm reading an interview in a magazine and I could use some help interpreting corporate-type talk. In '「Global title production」という立ち位置をより明確にしたいという思いがありました。', does it sound like the company wants to clarify their position regarding their production or strengthen their position? One more thing about this interview and I'll be out of your hair, sorry.

The context is that they're talking about how hard it was to improve user experience in their software. The person then says '違和感をなくすためにやっているので、その苦労は体感できないと思います(笑)。'. Is this basically a joke about how they experienced hardship so other people wouldn't have to? The use of できない is throwing me off a bit. Thanks for the help.

not possible to experience that hardship (because they put effort into eliminating discomfort)
