This is a Japanese language learning thread (デジット) designed by and for those interested in traditional weeaboo media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in weeaboo media or want to request a translation, this is the thread for you.

Read the new and improved guide before asking good and great questions.
https://nihongobyjamal.neocities.org/

read the old busted shit that teaches no one anything here before asking the traditional djtらしく stupid questions:

The "manga isn't reading" meme has got me wondering. It's not obvious to me if manga is recommended for absolute beginners for purely motivational reasons or because the simplicity actually leads to faster learning because there's more comprehensible stuff.

Anyway is starting with harder material than manga going to lead to improvement faster assuming motivation doesn't get destroyed? Is there a reason not to immediately jump into VNs?

Manga: High context, Hard to look things up
VN: Medium context, Easy to look things up
LN: Low context, Easy to look things up

I think progress is faster with VNs because it doesn't take forever to look up all the words. Having to draw kanji into Google Translate all the time is a nightmare.

Manga is easier to understand because of the pictures, at least in manga where something is actually happening. Some manga are just people standing around talking all the time, so the pictures don't help as much.

Choosing between manga and VNs is a question balance between context and ease of looking up words. Pick whichever one works better for you.

You can't learn Japanese

>> No.19438765

As an esl I went full E-E when I was pretty much fluent at it. This change didn't particularly influence my learning at all. there was no real merit to it and no downside because my reading speed and understanding was perfect. Going J-J after a couple of months is straight up retarded because your reading comprehension is going to be shit and you're gonna have to look up a lot of words IN the definitions of the fucking word you're looking up. Along with the aforementioned obvious definitions that are far easier to just look up on J-E rather than being a turbo autist thinking J-J will speed up your learning process just because a balding autist that pisses on jugs told you it would.
It's a waste of fucking time, stop being retarded.

Trust me there is no way in hell that kanji would stick for me merely as a pictograph for laughter unless I was exposed to it for a long, long time. I can recall how to write it based on keywords associated with its components thanks to RTK. In only 3-4 months I can recall and distinguish 2200-3000 kanji (so long as I keep up reviews in anki). Yeah, but if you can't remember how to write THAT thing without thinking of some dumb """story""" then what hope do you have for remembering ANY Kanji that looks like a thousand other ones?

Look, it's pretty fucking clear that among Kanji with similar parts/looks which ones are which, and if you can't remember/recognize 竹、筆、笑、笛、箱、答、等、and the like without sitting down for 30 seconds to go "the bamboo stalks yaddayaddayadda" you're gonna have a bad time.

What help are these "stories" going to offer when you need to know that 答え sounds like こたえ?When you're reading something with lots of different Kanji, are these stories really going to do you any good at all? 笑み and 笑う sound completely different, is Heisig gonna help you remember which is which when you're plowing through a novel and the words 微笑む and 笑った show up in close proximity?

You're making this way more complicated than it should

all を does is indicate that the word/clause before it is the OBJECT of the verb phrase.

Think about what's different between these two things

車は買いました
車を買いました

Helps to disambiguate things when you have more to say than just "bought car"

彼女は車を買いました

貧乏なお母さんとお父さんは自動車ディーラーに激安の車を買いに行きました

The sentence is still valid with only
行きました (went)
買いに行きました (went to buy)
車を買いに行きました (went and bought a car)
激安の車を買いに行きました (went and bought a dirt cheap car)
自動車ディーラーに激安の車を買いに行きました (went to the car dealership and bought a dirt cheap car)
お父さんは自動車ディーラーに激安の車を買いに行きました (dad went to the car dealership and bought a dirt cheap car)
お母さんとお父さんは自動車ディーラーに激安の車を買いに行きました (mom and dad went to the car dealership and bought a dirt cheap car)

With varying degrees of information added. We can even drop other parts of this and still have it make sense, but the information changes.

自動車ディーラーに行きました (just went to the car dealer's, nobody in particular is specified so it's probably you who did it, not specifically to buy anything at this point but who knows)
お父さんは車を買いに行きました (dad went to buy a car, no location specified or any details about the car, could be a hoopty, could be a fucking mercedes for all we know)
お父さんは行きました (dad went... somewhere, to do something. What? No idea. Not gonna argue with it.)

etc.

Really up to you to decide what is being を'd at any given time. Japanese stacks its modifiers differently than we do.

Look up transitive vs intransitive verb
>Many verbs can be transitive or intransitive. For example:
>Could you move your car please? [transitive]
>The trees were moving in the breeze. [intransitive]
Now see what your dictionary tells you about both verbs. This is the difference between ととのう and ととのえる.

Now as to there being multiple kanji for one word, it's just the way the life is (even English has something similar, e.g. naive and naïve, though in Nip there is sometimes slight meaning difference). Learn to accept and move on.

And when you do start outputting after 12-24 months, the more effort you put into pitch accent the better. He doesn't want you worrying about pitch accent in the beginning phases insofar as it stops/slows you from actually trying to understand input. It's a bad idea to use any very basic grammar resource as a reference while you're reading unless you're at such a low level that you're still learning what common conjunctions and conjugations mean.

The reason it's bad is because very basic resources always have a lot of selective omissions in nuance and syntax rules, because otherwise they'd be extremely dense and unusable, like Imabi. These omissions make it so that trying to directly apply what they say is going to mislead you more often than not. Let's say you're reading porn and come across "良いよねって". Trying to analyze it is just going to fuck you up.

It's not like you can just use one that's more complete like Imabi as a reference, either, because the way that such additional information is explained/taught is very different from how you're going to acquire it naturally, and it's going to "get in the way" more than it helps.

This doesn't mean that you shouldn't EVER reference Tae Kim or whatever, just that it's a bad way of thinking about grammar resources.

There was this site which proposed to teach us kanji by radicals instead of following school order, and it even taught a lot of archaic and useless ones so that we would become familiar with them when they appeared within others. The site layout had a lot of red and white, its introduction had a story, if I'm not mistaken, for the kanji 泉, and it was listed in one of the older versions of DJT guide.

So does anyone still got the link?

Wrong friendo. Mr. nice Jap guy has explicitly stated his video series is to nitpick pronunciation of excellent speakers. You are arguing he's merely being nice but you have to provide evidence. I know it's stupid considering Japan's low crime rate and the fact I've observed quite a few of them being nice, but I get this creepy feeling that they're unfeeling sociopathic robots who are more interested in conformity and the facade of being nice rather than having actual concern for other humans on an emotional level. No you seem confused. They've achieved a level far higher than any of yours in a shorter amount of time even factoring in the months or year they spent prior to doing AJATT. And you're not even making a direct argument against AJATT's efficiency here. What if they'd be even better had they done AJATT from the beginning?

Not only is this a dumb assertion for reasons I've given before (we can make inferences based on related experiences) but again it's not even relevant. The point is they achieve fluency faster. Your assertion that they can't claim what's better for beginners is irrelevant. At best your argument amounts to "use genki for 6 months and then do AJATT."

There is way more to AJATT than just reading to a lot of Japanese and listening to a lot of Japanese. It's those things that people take issue with, anon.

Assertions by authority figures aren't research. Moreover not all research is valid. Show me an RCT with a sample size of 1000+ where they control for intelligence, SES, the native language, and the foreign language being learned. Doesn't exist. Moreover, most people don't just "read more" because they read research proving comprehensible input works. They do it based off an intuitive understanding. Stop being disingenuous.

My strongest point is the bit about how most people advocating for "read more" just started reading because they thought it was the most fun or because it was intuitive for them, but then they turn around and demand stronger evidence from others to prove that their methods are as good or better.

I don't have unreasonable standards. In the absence of quality research, my standards are that plenty of people have achieved fluency in languages by reading a lot and so that's my best guess as to whether or not there's merit to the method. I apply that standard to AJATT too.
