The "manga isn't reading" meme has got me wondering. It's not obvious to me if manga is recommended for absolute beginners for purely motivational reasons or because the simplicity actually leads to faster learning because there's more comprehensible stuff.

Manga: High context, Hard to look things up
VN: Medium context, Easy to look things up
LN: Low context, Easy to look things up

I think progress is faster with VNs because it doesn't take forever to look up all the words. Having to draw kanji into Google Translate all the time is a nightmare.

Manga is easier to understand because of the pictures, at least in manga where something is actually happening. Some manga are just people standing around talking all the time, so the pictures don't help as much.

Choosing between manga and VNs is a question balance between context and ease of looking up words. Pick whichever one works better for you.

and if you can't read japanese at all then there's zero purpose in forcing yourself to use j-j definitions
there are a FEW "dictionary words" you need to learn out of order if you want to use j-j dictionaries early, but there's less than like a hundred, you certainly don't need a deck for it

As an esl I went full E-E when I was pretty much fluent at it. This change didn't particularly influence my learning at all. there was no real merit to it and no downside because my reading speed and understanding was perfect. Going J-J after a couple of months is straight up retarded because your reading comprehension is going to be shit and you're gonna have to look up a lot of words IN the definitions of the fucking word you're looking up. Along with the aforementioned obvious definitions that are far easier to just look up on J-E rather than being a turbo autist thinking J-J will speed up your learning process just because a balding autist that pisses on jugs told you it would.

Trust me there is no way in hell that kanji would stick for me merely as a pictograph for laughter unless I was exposed to it for a long, long time. I can recall how to write it based on keywords associated with its components thanks to RTK. In only 3-4 months I can recall and distinguish 2200-3000 kanji (so long as I keep up reviews in anki). Has anybody here ever gotten good enough at 日本語 that they went on to study another language?

I know that this is mostly weeaboo based but someday I want to study Russian or Spanish mainly for the same reason I like Japanese which is it gives me so much more media to consume. But at this rate it could be a VERY long time before I'm able to get comfortable enough with japanese. Even when I hit my dream of being able to read and listen to almost anything I feel like I will need to keep working on it 2 hours a day or it will go away.

Helps to disambiguate things when you have more to say than just "bought car"

The sentence is still valid with only

With varying degrees of information added. We can even drop other parts of this and still have it make sense, but the information changes.

It's a bad idea to use any very basic grammar resource as a reference while you're reading unless you're at such a low level that you're still learning what common conjunctions and conjugations mean.

The reason it's bad is because very basic resources always have a lot of selective omissions in nuance and syntax rules, because otherwise they'd be extremely dense and unusable, like Imabi. These omissions make it so that trying to directly apply what they say is going to mislead you more often than not. Let's say you're reading porn and come across "良いよねって". Trying to analyze it is just going to fuck you up.

It's not like you can just use one that's more complete like Imabi as a reference, either, because the way that such additional information is explained/taught is very different from how you're going to acquire it naturally, and it's going to "get in the way" more than it helps.

This doesn't mean that you shouldn't EVER reference Tae Kim or whatever, just that it's a bad way of thinking about grammar resources.

Because every time he came across a new word, he added it to Anki. It is 100% waste of time. When you keep reading and see the word again and again, you'll remember it without Anki. If the word doesn't show up often enough then its not a common word and you shouldn't force yourself to remember it.

it's a wonderful story, you should watch the three hour video sometime
some highlights are
he spent 100% of his time in japan outside of highschool in his room doing ajatt, the assigned guardian or whatever thought he was a loon for not wanting to see any of the country
a native he lived with had the decency to let him sit with his friends at lunch but he couldn't understand anything they talked about
he couldn't understand his classes
it still took him years after this to fully internalize that japan wasn't perfect and if he were born japanese his life wouldn't be perfect
the second he realized this he hated japanese and as far as i can tell that didn't end until he found the wonder of meditation and also realized he could monetize his failure
