Let me try and explain は and が for you,

Yes, it’s this topic. Let me start by saying that I don’t think any popular Japanese textbook provides a proper breakdown of the differing nuances belonging to these two particles. Please don’t underestimate how difficult this topic is. The most useful resources I’ve ever come across talking about this topic are The Structure of the Japanese Language and Japanese A Linguistic Introduction, which, even though written by professional linguists, still use 58 and 13 pages respectively (yes you read those numbers correctly) to explain the various uses of and differences between は and が. Excessive? Probably. There's a lot of very technical examples in those books that you'll probably rarely use. But if you’re like me, you’ll eventually get to the stage where you think you finally get it but you come across more and more sentences where you just can’t really figure out why は is used instead of が and vice versa. This post is my attempt to “condense” all I’ve learnt about this topic and I really hope it helps you even though there’s still a good chance that I will miss something.

The Notion of “Identifiability”

One of the main reasons why people find は and が confusing is that sentences are often studied in isolation when learning grammar. For the large majority of grammar points, this is not a problem at all. In this case, it is a very big problem.

Take, for instance, the two sentences 机の上に食べ物がある and 食べ物は机の上にある. Both sentences are grammatically correct even if you change the particles and sentence structure around. However, depending on the context, one of the sentences will be conceptually incorrect even if it is grammatically correct. This is very important. Whenever you use Xは, you are making the assumption that whomever you are addressing knows what X refers to.

Let’s say you go over to your friend Willard’s house and the first thing he says to you is “Hey dude, the food’s on the table!” But you don’t know anything about any food because he hasn’t mentioned anything about any food. So naturally, you have no idea what he’s talking about and would say something like “Huh? What food?” in response.

However, now let’s say that your friend says “Hey dude! By the way, if you’re hungry, there is food on the table that I just made!” This makes sense both conceptually and grammatically. Your friend has introduced the concept of food he made into the realm of identifiable things, which I will refer to from this point on as discourse. From this point on, Willard can refer to the food without having to clarify it every time because now you know exactly what food he’s talking about.

Now you know that when they teach you いる and ある, why they always tell you to use が before the verbs because it would make no sense to say out of the blue “Wow, the cat’s on the table” or the Japanese equivalent うわ、机の上に猫はある without any prior context because just what exactly is this cat you’re talking about?

So to wrap up this introduction, you can only use は to mark identifiable things. Use が to introduce unidentifiable things.

Let's break it down

Let’s go through the various situations one by one.

1: Anaphoric topics

You use は to refer back to things you have introduced into the realm of identifiable things using が. I will use the classic tale of Momotaro to explain this:

昔々あるところにおじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。ある日おじいさんは山へ柴刈りに、おばあさんは川へ洗濯に行きました。

A long long time ago, there lived an old man and an old woman. One day, the old man went to the mountain to gather firewood, and the old woman went to the river to wash clothes.

In the first sentence, you cannot use は because the old man and the old woman have not yet been introduced into the discourse. Once you have introduced them with が, you can then use は (as seen in the second sentence) because you, as the reader, now know that the old man and the old woman of the second sentence are the same old man and old woman introduced in the first sentence.

2: Generic topics

Topics which you can reasonably expect the average person to know about do not need to be introduced with が since generic concepts, e.g. “the brain”, “dogs”, “cheese”, are accepted to be a part of common discourse. That’s why whenever you are talking about generic topics, it’s okay to use は.

If the person you are talking to doesn’t know what “humans” refers to, well, don’t worry. Japanese grammar doesn’t make exceptions for those kinds of people

3: General comments and specific comments

Basically, this situation clears up the differences between very similar sentences with only a different particle usage. So what’s the difference between 人は死ぬ and 人が死ぬ? Well, the first sentence is the general comment type and the second sentence is the specific comment. In this case, specific comments are comments made in response to something, and general comments are comments made about something as a concept.

In the first sentence, we know using は is okay because 人 is a generic topic. In much the same vein, a suitable translation for the first sentence would be something like “All men die”, a general comment on the topic of humans, if you will.

The second sentence is trickier. In isolation, saying this sentence wouldn’t make much sense. This is the kind of sentence that is said in response to something. Let’s say you see on the news that there’s a nuclear meltdown at Plant X. Here, the second sentence is a much better response since this sentence is not a general statement about humans as a whole. It is a statement predicting what will happen to the specific humans at Plant X.

Two final examples. Let’s say you have a headache. You would say 頭が痛い instead of 頭は痛い. Why? Because a general comment about heads hurting doesn’t make any sense (Heads hurt???) if you’re trying to convey that your head is hurting in response to the pain you feel. Hence you use が because saying that your head hurts is a specific comment, not a general comment.

What about 空が青い and 空は青い? What’s the difference? Well, the sky is generally blue, so the second sentence is a correct general comment. The first sentence is a specific comment made in a specific situation: “The sky is blue! (because I’m looking at it and I can see that it’s blue)". Now, you could theoretically say something like 空は赤い (The sky is red) and while it’s perfectly okay grammatically and conceptually in terms of using は, it’s factually wrong. On the other hand, 空が赤い is totally okay if there’s a beautiful sunset happening and just for a while, the sky is red.

4: Spontaneous situations

A less complicated topic but an important one nonetheless, and certainly one I didn’t even think about until I came across it. I will use a scenario which I will take directly from Japanese A Linguistic Introduction because it is excellent. I don’t think anyone has any trouble knowing when to use “I’m going to X” and “I will X”. For instance, if your friend Willard is walking next to you and he drops his pen, you wouldn’t say “I’m going to get it” because “going to” has the nuance of something you planned in advance. You would say “I’ll get it”, because this is a spontaneous situation in which you have made a spontaneous decision.

It just so happens that Japanese makes this distinction too. What’s the correct response to しまった、宿題をしなかったんだ (Crap, I didn’t do my homework)? It’s something like 心配するな、私がしてやるから (Don’t worry, I’ll do it for you)。You use が because it conveys a decision you just made.

However, if the question is something like 皆、今日の講義に行く? (Is everyone going to today’s lecture?), you’d use は and say 私は行きません because this is probably something you decided ahead of time. In English, you wouldn’t say “I won’t go” here. You’d say “I’m not going (to go)”.

5: Contrastive は

This is probably the easiest point to understand. Whenever you are contrasting two things or concepts in a sentence, you mark both using は. まことさんはきましたが、あきらさんはきませんでした。(Makoto came, but Akira didn’t). 雑誌って? 買いはしますが、よみはしません。(Magazines? Well, I buy them but I don't read them). Simple as that.

This topic is concerned with が taking on an "exhaustive" meaning. Let’s take the exchange だれがこれをつくったんですか。--> 私が作りました。(Who made this? I made it). Using は here is not correct because you are saying that you are the one who made it and not anyone else.

Let’s look at another scenario. There are three people: A, B, and C. They have just met and don't know anything about each other.

A: 誰が寿司が好きですか。(Who likes sushi?)

B: 私は好きです。(I do)

C: 私はあまり好きじゃないです。(I don’t really like it)

A: そうか。じゃ、Bが寿司が好きですね。(I see. So B [and only B] likes sushi, right?)

B likes sushi. C doesn’t like sushi. In this scenario, only B likes sushi and hence you use が. This is termed the “exhaustive が” in The Structure of the Japanese Language. You can't use は in the last sentence because that would imply that A doesn't know if anyone else besides B (in this case just C) in the group likes sushi. That's why when B first answers, he uses は because he doesn't know if C likes sushi or not. But A has full knowledge of every person's fondness for sushi, so A can use が.

I started with rtk first, it might be a meme here but it teaches you pretty damn good shit. Makes learning shit easier but don’t fall for the “learning rtk will speed up my japanese” meme.

This is why you do KKLC. Just learn the 3400 key vocabulary and you will never need to use Anki again because everything will be obvious. If you're having a hard time with some of the cards, you can use some of the non-key vocab to give yourself extra practice for certain kanji, but you'll end up with far less than 10,000 cards and basically ready to go completely monolingual and pick up everything else in the same way you pick up new words in your native language.

Hey, everyone! I'm beginning the long journey of learning Japanese and have a question that I haven't seen anyone ask quite yet. I've heard that communicating with native/fluent Japanese speakers is an integral part of effectively learning the language, but I've never heard anyone say at what point in your studies you should be attempting to do so. Here's a bit of (potentially useless) background info about myself, feel free to just skip to the question below it:

Right now I can speak very little, if any Japanese. I began studying only a few days ago and can sound out all of the kana. Though I've barely gotten into my studies I've come to learn that Japanese seems to be a very logical language, meaning that it follows a set of syntactical rules and doesn't really break from them (whereas with English shit can be all over the place). As a computer programmer this really bolstered my confidence and overall optimism about learning Japanese. Though English is currently my only spoken language, I was able to pick up programming languages (and anything else that follows a set logic, such as playing a piano) quite easily. That being said, I don't expect this to be a walk in the park. I plan on studying for at least 2 hours a day until I feel satisfied with where I'm at, which I've heard is a good pace. Anyways, I digress to the question at hand since this is getting off topic...

When in my studies should I begin attempting to communicate with native/fluent Japanese speakers on services such as HelloTalk?

I'm sure it's much too soon for me to start doing this now, but I would still like to know when I should start trying so I can have a subgoal to work toward. Any other tips would also be much appreciated, thanks!

Hello all,

I'm working my way down the Genki path slowly but surely.. I just finished the "Japanese Writing System" that covers Hirigana/Katakana. Clearly I'm going to need to memorize this before I move onto "Greetings" (correct me if I'm wrong there, should I be moving ahead on just comparing letters in sentences to the letters on a seperate sheet of paper? I feel kind of roadblocked if I don't). But I'm wondering in terms of writing it out, is there a step by step stroke order for Hirigana/Katakana the same it's setup for Kanji, or do I just kind of eyeball it from the grid(s) offered? I'm not overly concerned with it being 100% perfect, but I wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything here.

Also is there anywhere I can go for critique on my handwriting? Because my idea of an accurate 'a' could be terribly wrong. Whether that's a 3rd party site, a reddit user, or another text book I feel like that'd be a huge help as a beginner.

And does anyone have any tips for memorizing Hirigana/katakana? I'm making flashcards and plan on using a few other study strategies but I'm interested in what's work for other people as well.

People talk about RTK as a method to learn kanji up front so that you don't have to deal with it later, but people who seem good at Japanese say that learning kanji never stops, and I figured I can get the best of both worlds if I really go completionist on this before I start on vocabulary. At 25 a day I should be able to finish in 255 days or a bit under 9 months, it will be a grind but I think it will be well worth it to make the next few years of learning Japanese truly easy mode, since this is obviously the hardest part.

I'll be doing plenty of immersion in that time anyway so it's not like my progress will be held back. I figure by the time I'm done I'll be able to understand most anime before I've practiced a single word in Anki. After all, I've picked up a ton of vocabulary from my time watching subbed anime, the language itself is quite easy.

Hi there! I think it's a good start that you're working on reading/writing Kana early on because as you progress with Genki, you'd be able to practice your Hiragana and Katakana skills. Of course it's going to be painstakingly slow at first, but as you keep reading on and on, you'll eventually get them all down easily. Also, mastering Hiragana and Katakana reduces your reliance on Romaji and would also allow you to read Furigana (those little Hiragana on top of some Kanji that provides its reading.)

I think Kana does have a stroke order but for most of them, it's pretty obvious how you'd write them. The only tricky one I can think of now is the Katakana tsu & shi and so & n. Note though that just like how the Genki book says, there are different fonts for Japanese and different characters might look a bit different when typed out and when written.

For practice, the way I did it was just copy the whole table and just copied them on a piece of paper, then tried to write it from memory, on almost every free piece of paper I could find.

Kanji grid is pointless. After you finish up the 教育漢字 it gets increasingly less easy to find the other thousand or so in the wild, which sort of proves the point about 95% of Japanese being readable without knowing a shit ton of the things. Drilling the Kanji without context is also going to do you no good because I guarantee you'll forget it by the time that obscure ass Kanji appears in your life. Just wait till you see it in a book/the news/etc and bam, you've captured the Kanji with a memorable experience attached to it.

I know there are probably very few people who are as fucking dense as me but I found out that the best way to study basic grammar is to download the Tae Kim deck, start doing it and look up according chapters in the book whenever you have problems fully grasping the meaning of an example sentence presented on the card.

Speaking for myself, Anki, being a machine that churns out what you've typed in before, just makes the word you've typed more 'permanent' than what you've merely consumed (read) in a book.

If you put it in Anki, you feel like you actually memorized it, or at least it occupies a stronger position in your brain compared to 'just' reading things.

it's a habit from when Anki IS the recommended method of learning, I expect. Also some people are really concerned about statistics..

Everyday for the last 2 months I've been spending 30 - 60 mins to learn core2k (and some Tae Kim vocabulary) in order to read without looking up every single word. I'm about 1200 words in core2k and started to read Yotsuba in the last few days (inb4 manga isn't reading), however Anki is still such a fucking chore.

Anki is learning supplement in the first place. Just like flash cards aren't meant to be your only source of learning, Anki is meant as a support. When people said they should 'stop anki', it's partly meme and partly to stop people from relying purely on Anki and do other learning things, like reading.

That's why it's "just read MORE". Do more 'actual studying' instead of relying purely on supplementary learning methods like Anki.

two factors here
the first is that you are primarily learning words you've had no exposure to until they showed up in your new cards for the day
srs is intended to be used for information you are exposed to elsewhere first
the second is that reading should be by far the priority and you should be willing to reduce new cards per day to keep anki under an hour, 30 minutes is good but it sounds like a problem you might face soon
longer anki review sessions tend to burn you out which both decreases your retention (which increases anki review time in a cycle) and demotivates you from reading as much as you would otherwise

Like 90% of core's usefulness comes from the first few hundred words, and getting that last 10% requires going through most of the rest of the deck. This is compounded by the fact that Anki isn't really designed to "teach" you new words, its intended to help you remember shit you've already learned. Basically all you're really getting from core is a certain amount of vague familiarity with a word which will probably help somewhat when you first encounter it in the wild, but isn't really guaranteed to. This is actually fairly useful for when you're still brand new, especially when used while you're reading tae kim or whatever, but it's usefulness drops off way too fast for it to be worth spending several months on it.

I use Core2k for the chink letters mostly. I know there are kanji decks, but I prefer to know 3-4 words where a kanji is used, I hate memorizing meaningless symbols.

Words in Core are well organized, I couldn't make a better deck myself.

the best method no one talks about is biting the bullet and just diving into reading, skipping core all together. You'll pull your hair out looking up every other word but that will only last for a short while. The earlier you go at it the less painful it is. Its when you do 6k core and 7 grammar books just to realize you can't get past the first page.. that's when it really hurts.
