What would you consider is a good path for reading a light novel? I am currently reading classroom of the elite and despite being 5 volumes in i am still checking 4 to 5 words a page. Despite the fact that i am not supposed to check that many words after some volumes, am i doing something wrong? Or did i try reading light novel way too early?

Are honorifics ever used during sex? Like sama, senpai and stuff? I know it’s a weird question. But it came to mind suddenly when I thought about how many kinks (in both America and Japan) work off of a power imbalance, or a dominant/submissive relationship. And I started wondering if two people were having sex, with that kind of SM relationship, would the “bottom” ever use honorifics to “honor” or heighten the “top” or the “dominant”? less than a week is most commonly recommended, 15-25 kana a day
after this you will still fuck up occasionally, you'll just be at the point where you can actually use kana as long as you check when you're not confident
only through actual reading will it become instinctual
studying kana outside of reading has highly diminishing returns, but it's as early as learning kana that people fall into the trap of "i have to master it before i try to use it" and play with flashcards instead of learning japanese

trying to learn japanese without knowing the kanji is a fool's errand
if you learned 28 a day you could hit 100,000 kanji in about ten years

there's only 2200 common use kanji which are the ones I'm worried about. I want to increase the daily amount I'm learning since i have plenty of free time but i'm afraid I'll start forgetting a bunch if i do that. on the other hand rtk teaches them in sets so maybe it wouldn't be all that bad.

the longer your reviews get, the lower your retention gets and the more draining it gets
more importantly, it takes longer for the time per review to go back down even when you stop adding cards, particularly if you end up with a lot of daily leeches because your attention is split between too many new things to actually be learning them properly
just be careful with how far you push it and remember that the idea of "getting the kanji out of the way" is bullshit so you don't actually have to do 2200

Though I agree that a good base of kanji can greatly aid retention, no one needs to know 100, 000 kanji. The vast majority of those are variants, useless proper names and such. Even the most erudite Japanese would not know more than 6~7 thousand unless their job or hobby relates to some kind of specialty. Who needs to know shit like 汴? It doesn't even figure in some useful reference like 汨 does in 汨羅.

I just read an article that said when numbers are written vertically, they typically use kanji to represent each digit; when written horizontally they would use roman numbers. So in this case it's basically the vertical version of 1603.

Chinese is infinitely easier to learn at the start. However, high-level Chinese grammar is harder than the hardest Japanese grammar. Once you get over the initial hump, Japanese grammar proves its unusual power with each new thing you learn. Thank you for your support anon. I'm actually enjoying learning so far because Japanese seems like a pretty straightforward language once you get it down. I took two semesters of Latin in college and it was extremely difficult because of all the tenses and sentence structure rules. Japanese doesn't seem to have that problem from what I read.

It's 'straightforward' gramatically but it's not an easy language. Latin vocabulary is much easier since you'll recognize half the words by virtue of them being part of a lot of English words. Japanese vocabulary is, unless you know Chinese, something completely new. Also, when you're reading, particularly early on you won't be able to guess the meaning of a word at all because literally every symbol that constitutes it will be unknown to you. Also, there are quite a few kanji with readings that differ depending on both the word that it's part of and the context that it's used in (for example, 市場 can be pronounced both 'ichiba' when it's used to mean a literal, physical market, and 'shijou' when it's used to mean 'the market' as a concept).

I'm not saying you shouldn't study it but you'll be disappointed if you think it's easy and straightforward because it has some goddamn bullshit in it let me tell you.

I'm kinda stupid and naive (hence why one of my life goals is to join the military), but I just really want to make sure I get hirigana down before moving on. I've also been working a lot so it's not like I was exclusively studying for three days straight.

I didn't say it was easy. I just said it was straightforward. With an extremely rudimentary understanding of hirigana, I was able to read a word or two. In english or Latin because of the way our pronunciation works, it's really difficult to read anything if you only know half the alphabet. I'm just saying that the grammar rules seem simpler compared to Romance and Germanic language. By no means do I think it will be easy to learn though.

read through tae kim's guide to japanese grammar, not the "complete" guide, and don't aim to memorize what's in it but only to familiarize yourself with the kinds of things you'll be seeing so that you can look them up later
as for reading material, there are bad options but no real best one
a lot of people suggest yotsuba with the biggest complaint being that the slang can make it difficult to look up words/grammar until you get used to it, but that's what i used
be ready to struggle, and understand that there will be things that you wont be able to figure out, if you spend a few minutes on a sentence and aren't getting anywhere with it it's time to cut your losses and move forward
every little bit that you do understand even loosely is what gradually moves you forward and so you want to get as much of that as you can
aside from reading, you will probably choose to use anki to practice reading words written in kanji, this is the only thing you should use anki for and you should keep it from taking up too much time that could be spent reading instead - if anki starts taking an hour and you are drained afterwards then stop adding new cards for a while
whether to use core6k or not is an endless debate, if/when you don't make sure you don't add every word you come across but only words you've seen a few times and are obviously things you'll be seeing more of
in my personal opinion the reading of the word is all that matters in anki, definitions can be left to exposure and checking the dictionary enough times, but when you start reading material without furigana it's important that you read it correctly because every sentence you read is an example to your brain of what natural japanese sounds like
remember that the answer to your struggles is always read more

Any recommendations for e-readers that work with Japanese text? I asked this before but no-one answered, so I figured I'd ask again.

I'm currently using a Kindle, which displays text fine enough but it's bad at doing any kind of dictionary lookup since it has trouble realizing where a word starts and stops. I know that there's some very good Android apps like Jade Reader (recommended in the OP) that do exactly what I'm looking for but I kind of want something with e-paper since it's easier on the eyes.

1) the 彼 答える with just the 苛立たしい表現 and no words, or
2) does he say his 答え while also having 苛立たしい表現?

My understanding is that the で particle is a 'method' or 'tools', so 1) seems to be right answer. Going one step further, I'd say if one wanted to mean 2), you can replace the で with に.

I was making new cards and the sentence 警官は挙動不審の男を警察へ同行した came up. I guessed what 警官 mean (police station), and thought to myself, "oh, like...the 'police box'". But I can't for the life of me remember what "police box" is until I looked it up. And so I doubt if I actually understood what 交番 is.

Do you guys have easier time coming up with synonyms and/or related terms? How do you do that?

They are. There basically like mnemonics that can help you remember/identify the real meaning of a word (or you can even think of it as something similar to latin root words in english). 必 is not related to 戈, though. 必 is a pictograph of bits of wood clamped onto another bit of wood for the purpose of straightening it. It's the source character of 柲.

The very simple rule is that the Japanese reading has a more "everyday", commonplace, concrete feel to it, and often features in expressions and idioms, while the Chinese readings tend to be more formal, scientific, or abstract.

背筋 is usually read as はいきん. You read it as せすじ when you use it in some idioms (背筋が寒い/凍る and so on), you mean posture by it (背筋を伸ばす and so on) and the context is about cooking.

Literally, only use Anki/SRS at the very beginning, and from there reading is essentially its own SRS since you'll be seeing the same words over and over. It's better to observe patterns on your own than to bank hard on "keywords" and individual kanji meanings.

The only thing I would advise against reading is Manga, as the meme goes (manga is not reading.) While manga IS reading by technicality, you're only hurting yourself as a beginner by diving into shit that has several different types of difficult grammar/slang patterns which depend on understanding the basics well, while also having fewer words to read on average which is effectively robbing you of practice.
