I love her appearance. It's very striking to me. Her boots, capelet, headband, ascot tie, boots, everything. Blue is even my favorite color which is most of her color scheme. To me Alice completely defines Touhou. When I see Touhou I only think of her. Her full name is very beautiful too. I have a long surname too but it lacks the charm hers has. I never thought I would fall in love like this, but it just happened one day. I kept dreaming of her and eventually any applicable game I'd only play as her, no exceptions. Since 2012 nothing has changed. Where there was no hope, I found Alice. I like to imagine that she has the same hatred and love for the things I do, and that we do most things together living under the same roof. The same struggles, crises, and triumphs we both go through, and we eat the same things or talk about things. I love that she looks so wholesome and tends to herself. Even if I may have some fetishes, when it comes to Alice I want to just lock hands with her, kiss her and gently have missionary sex with her. Or just hang out on a quiet sunny day. Most of all she's never abandoned me. I have had many best friends that I thought would never go but they did. My own relatives have been distant from me sometimes, either because of actual distance or because they're busy with their lives. I don't like most people I meet. When I'm at work it remains the same way. I can come home from work, like tonight, and be happy that it's just me and her. I never thought so. My interpretation is that because she enjoys encounters, it's more language of the competition. Not that it's a meaningless exchange, but just more intense than it might normally be. Also, I don't know Japanese, so I always assumed the translation could not retain the intended inflection of the text. I never got why pictures of Alice smiling were under 'Not Alice'. Like she can never be cheerful and friendly, because she is in solitude (and not even all of the time) . In 10.5/12.3 she will taunt quite a few characters in versus mode, but sometimes gives them backhanded compliments or considers a research aspect to the fight. Upon beating Marisa in 12.3 she talks about completing the ultimate doll and that all of the forest of magic will be hers. Just vicious banter. Though I've seen lots of artists portray her as cruel or with a mean-streak, I don't mind those either. Alice is Alice!

I can't say I've fallen for Alice in quite the same way as OP, but I have admired her for nearly as long, about 10 years.

I believe her to be one of the most, if not the most enigmatic character in all of Touhou. If the bounded world of Gensokyo should hold up a looking-glass to our own (like, as some believe, the horizon of a black hole) then Alice gazes back through it into us.

In her passioned study for the secrets of life, deep within the sigil-scribed pages of her grimoire, she is the only one to have made the journey across the abyss into supernatural and hyperreal being. She has ended up in possession of eschatological power. She is of course not the only one, but unlike for ancient youkai like Yukari, to her it is alien and uncomfortable. Alice could create an army of self-replicating dolls who would accelerate themselves out of her control like the sorcerer's apprentice's broomsticks, fully sentient or not.

That is why she is reluctant to use her full power, it's not so much reluctance as katechonic restraint. That is also why she is frustrated by, but nonetheless relates to Marisa who remains in hell-bent power-crazed scholarship. She knows where that leads - she was, and maybe still is, just the same. And so are we...

tl;dr: Don't worry about it, it's all bollocks. I just wanted to post in such a refreshingly lovely thread.

Even though she hasn't been in the recent games, I am firmly convinced she is a ZUN favorite and so has a lot of story to her compared to many others. I think your analysis definitely has merit. You could go deeper with PC-98 Alice and the Alice we know now.She is more dedicated to her work than most as well. There is a lot of potential for story with her or maybe it was meant to be left up to the imagination after all? Maybe she had an experience using her full power once with disastrous effects, or maybe it really is that she just doesn't want her maximum power to be matched. Who knows, Alice is a strategist. Alice appears to have more maturity than most other characters, something that comes naturally from hard work and overcoming obstacles. While I have suggested that this is a source of her restraint, you’re very right to not forget simple pride too. I was reminded of a Dylan Moran quote:
”You should stay away from your potential. I mean, that is something you should leave absolutely alone! You’ll mess it up! It’s potential, leave it! And anyway, it’s like your bank balance, you know – you always have much less than you think. Leave it as the locked door within yourself and then at least, in your mind, the interior will always be palatial.”

In any case it’s clear also that Alice enjoys more the mental challenges of being a magician than the spectacular effects. After all, once you’ve accumulated power to a certain level you must wonder “so what now?”

She’s admirable to me in that despite whatever past she’s had and her powers, she’s still managed to be a (mostly) good character who is nonetheless (again, reluctantly) sociable and knows exactly what brings her joy - learning magic and her dolls. I would not be surprised therefore if she has in fact become the character with whom ZUN himself identifies most.

Lastly, because she has this maturity, and is both youkai and human, it seems to me that it is through her that we may best know Gensokyo. If ever I was to visit, like Virgil to Dante, I wouldn’t want anyone else to be my guide.

As you’ve rightly pointed out, all this is mostly just my imagination, but that is the beauty of Touhou. ZUN, like any great artist, knows that one expresses just as much through things not shown as those that are, that we the fans have the freedom to imagine, to dream. Beyond the fragile languages of words, pictures and sounds he communicates in the most sincere language of all, that of desire, and of love. Love through his sacrifice of labour that he has shared rather than jealously guarded or selfishly sold, and with a creative desire that replicates a thousand-fold. Every derivative work shines in the light of his creations which in turn shine on each other, like a seven-coloured constellation, a blaze in the eastern sky.

One last thing, does anyone have better resolution of related pic? It’s a screenshot from a YouTube video, and it seems to have vanished from anywhere else.

That's true, magic is a true passion for her. It definitely occupies a good portion of her life. Alice seems like she enjoys figuring out efficiency, how to do more with less. While she brings many dolls into battle, she also has a variety of specialized dolls as well. She never really has crazy schemes to use her formidable power to expand her influence, as you said. She's a good soul. I think really her studious nature leaves no time for that anyway. There is such a crazy amount of fandom and headcanon that sprouts from Touhou that it eventually just builds from itself, and may even influence actual canon itself. A series that's been around so long, to me that is very impressive. The Maybell poster is a great example. ZUN is generous with his creation, he lets the community weigh in on it heavily.
