Len'en 1 is about people who were spirited away to a land called "Mugenri", and it was a "strenght" test to see who could govermn the land because the head priest was going to leave for a vacation,
Len'en 2 is about the clouds are getting heavy or something and a sword coming to life or something.
Len'en 3 is about a lotta spirits are entering Mugenri and some girl/guy wanna be the New Emperor
Len'en 4 is a war and explosions

Len'en characters do not "have" gender; JynX (creator) explicitly said "It's up to your imagination (aka headcannon) to see which character gender it is, so it could be girl or boy"
depending on what you see.

Well after Cafe comes Monochrome World which is most likely not gonna be a shoot'em up.

Might get one after that though, I think JynX is just so burnt out after all that work into BPoHC that they want to take a break from coding that type of game for a bit. I don't blame them.

The entire Len'en series is based on a Touhou-styled fan game parody from 2010 named "鏈縁无現里～ Emergency everyday" by Daijin, a good friend of Jynx. In that game the joke was that instead of everyone being a girl, it was everyone being a boy.

It doesn't make sense for some character's gender to be left up to your imagination. Since clearly characters like Tsubakura, Yabusame and Tsurubami should be female based one their role "shrine maiden".
Feels like when this series is going to grow up a bit people will debate on this topic, just like people in Touhou community debate on some silly things.

People can debate all they want, but I doubt it'll change JynX's decision on keeping their gender ambiguous.

I do think JynX's other reason for doing this (other than what was stated in the interview) is because if they make all the characters male, then it's just touhou but genderswapped. If they were all female, then it's just a touhou clone. If there was a 50/50 between male and female, it might not be as unique.
So JynX leaves it to whatever anyone wants so it satisfies what they want. Just my speculation though.
