That's pretty bad, but when I started out I also tried switching to a gamepad and that's what made the game comfortable enough for me to play longer and get my first clears. I think it's possible to play as well with a controller as you could with a keyboard. The biggest problem is finding a good PC controller, which is very hard nowadays. I'm guessing a Playstation controller or Saturn (if you can find or build one) are your best bets.

HOW THE FUCK do I beat Patchy in TH6 normal without dying once with Reimu/default shot. The last part of her stage has a couple fairies spamming bullets that are seemingly unavoidable unless you bomb and then comes Patchouli with her fucking beams that you have to dodge properly without running into her bullets.

I'm literally crying, I've spent 8 hours so far on TD Extra and have only managed to make it to the boss three times. Almost every single run I reset 15-30 seconds in. I fucking hate this game.

To some extent I feel your pain, but resetting that much doesn't make for good practice. If you really can't figure out that bit you keep resetting at, then for now just budget a bomb for it so you can at least practice the rest of the stage portion. Or if you have figured it out, but keep missing due to stupid mistakes, call it a day and try again when you're fresh. Playing to the point that you get so frustrated isn't helpful.

I tried going up until the very end of EoSD Lunatic no matter how many continues I used (I'm out of practice despite having cleared it in Hard mode with all the shot types) and holy fuck. I remember having captured Scarlet Meister and Scarlet Gensokyo in Hard mode but the Lunatic version of Scarlet Gensokyo is probably one of the biggest bullshits I've seen in Touhou. This shit goes beyond simple micrododging, you're forced to anticipate both the bullets who constantly try to wall you and the occasional shots coming from Remilia with little to no freedom of movement, with the hitboxes of the big bubbles being hard as fuck to read in the spur of the moment. This is insane.

First pick a game that has spell practice and focus on that (IN and HSiFS are good). Now start doing no reset runs for practice. After few runs you should make a note of which parts/spellcards you are having problems with and either bomb through them or practice them in spell practice until you can capture them consistently.
If you are dying without having used all your bombs then you are not bombing enough, don't try to save them, even just spamming all of them as soon as you get them is better than saving them.
Also make sure you use the item pickup line as often as possible so you can maximize the amount of lives you get.

Definitely use vpatch. Not only is the input lag fix useful, you can also use it to pixel-double the window, so you can play at a reasonable size without any distortion.
As for shot type, Needle Reimu is probably better for survival, because she gets 3 bombs per life and Mari only gets 2.

Thanks. I wasn't sure whether or not to chalk up some of these deaths to lack of capability or bullshit because I swore I noticed some of these bullets fast enough to get out of the way. Kinda hate ReimuB's focused bomb but I'll try her again. I swapped to Marisa because I had trouble hitting 800 point items with Reimu by Stage 6.

Not sure how to do that pixel doubling thing though, because nothing in the .ini looks like a toggle for that.

It's not a single option, you set it up something like this:

This is the exact point I'm trying to refute. When you look at someone's paper and see the answers, all you have to do is write it down, which is not hard. When you watch a replay, you still have to go through the re-enactment of the movements you memorized yourself. If you want to use a testtaking metaphor, it's more like watching a teacher go through an example in class then doing a very similar problem but with the numbers changed up (imagine this as the RNG making every run slightly different). Sure, it encourages plug and chug instead of testing your real understanding of the topic, but it's not "cheating".

Practice Shou and Byakuren, since it seems like you're just bombing a lot of their patterns without even trying. Look up replays or something. Shou's 3rd non and Byakuren's magic butterfly are free if you know the cheese/memo strats, respectively. And green UFOs exist, you know. They're usually better value for survival too. Don't pass up on free greens just because you're trying to wait for a red.

Pretty good. Stage 4 has been giving me trouble. I just unlocked practice mode for stage 5 recently and I am going to grind on that stage soon. What, because the mechanics are more forgiving than the average game, so it will create bad habits? I've seen this argument before, but I think it's ridiculous. It's not as though new players learn how to play Touhou once and then never grow or develop their skill. And whichever game you pick to play first, you're going to have to learn new mechanics when you switch to another one anyway, because they're all different. So why would it not be better for total newbies to start on a game with some training wheels to develop basic skills and strategies, then learn to deal with other games' harsher mechanics once they have some success under their belt? I think I'll just give up. Clearing normal in all games took a lot of time, but advancing to hard is too much of a difficulty curve or even difficulty wall for me. Does anyone have a touhou-experience regaining experience?
I broke my radius bone in an accident one month ago and the gypsum was removed only a couple of days back. Now I have to redevelop atrophied muscles, which sadly includes touhou.
I keep dying on patterns I used to conciser easy. My mind still goes like «This doesn't look hard, there are a lot of wide gaps here and there» but the expectations don't meet reality anymore and it feels weird. Hits the motivation strongly as well as I can't even repeat walking through the «easy» patterns.
On the other hand there are patterns that just require smart positioning and I go through them as I used to. So the things go either too brutal or too boring.

Do you try to go through old 1cc's slowly repeating the way you got there? Or rush straight into stuff you considered hard-but-not-impossible and grind them until you can pass them again?

It's good to have a goal, but don't get too set on "soon".
Anyway, before that, you should knock out some Extra stages. If you've cleared 8 on hard, I guarantee you can do at least 6, 7 (Phantasm), 10, and 16 right now, probably 13 as well. Honestly, you should have done Phantasm while you were still in the flow from the Extra, they're basically the same, but either way it won't take you too much practice.

I didn't intentionally grace at all when I beat the extra with Reisen. I just always kept the shield on no matter what and many of Hecatias spellcards are really easy even with the huge hitbox so you can save some bombs there.
