This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

>> No.19338425

>>19338401
Yes. Drilling sentences in isolation is useful at the very earliest stages of Japanese, before it's possible to read for more than a minute or two at a time before the affective filter goes up, but once you're capable of reading you should spend almost all your time reading. The issue is that there's no purpose in mining sentences when you can read, and you can't mine efficiently/effectively if you can't read. I was actually kind of intrigued when the KLC reading sets came out for exactly this reason, because maybe I could recommend them to people, but then I realized they were full of lame written-register Japanese.

You can, of course, drill anything you consider yourself to be having trouble with, but you shouldn't consider it an obligation at all to mine sentence flashcards for whatever words you mine. This isn't to say that mining sentences for /vocabulary flashcards/ is bad, just that there's little purpose in making /sentence flashcards/ since they're not very useful if you can read well enough to mine them.

The native Japanese teacher guy on youtube confirmed that both are impressive and he could only find flaws in their accents. Khatz only changed up things after he attempted to monetize. Matt hasn't 180'd on anything, and if he did that's just evidence he's open to having his mind changed. Even if your lie was truth, you should still take advice from someone who is fluent but might try to scam you over people who aren't fluent. Who cares if you think he makes good points if you've no way of telling if he's fluent? And how can you trust your intuition if you're not fluent either? My intuition says his point about sentences being superfluous is kinda silly. Words aren't used in isolation. Sentence context is important, and mining the entire sentence is as easy as mining the word. It can only be a good thing. But who gives a shit about a dekinai's intuition? I suggest not doing Island for your first VN. While the grammar is technically easy there is a lot of long-winded scientific infodumping. If that isn't bad enough the protagonist's internal monologues are really heavy and involved and the game expects you to keep up with its numerous hypothetical situations and shock you with red herrings. It's a good choice for your 3rd or 4th VN but I suggest you pick something simpler to start with. Even Eustia is easier.

They have context around them but it's not always verbal or written context. Sometimes it's seeing someone walk in the cold and say 寒い. You can remember the context for a while but the point is to learn and remember words so you know what they mean when they apear in a new context, not memorize sentences from books. So why is srsing sentences better in your own opinion?

>> No.19338800

also in general doing recently released VNs as your first VN might be a bad idea, there's a good chance they're missing content that will get added later and also not enough people have read it to know whether it's "kamige" or not (and you shouldn't ruin kamige as an early read)

first, it should be clear, but i'm not the anon that has been part of this discussion as i just jumped in with the post which you replied to. second, i am also not fluent so my opinion means nothing, i get that.
the benefit i see with srsing sentence cards is really only when first starting out and reading is a massive pain in the ass due to not being familiar with how to actually read the words -- furigana be damned. having a relatively small group of words that you see over and over will help you memorize them faster because you aren't overwhelmed with information (~5k potential words vs ~30k+ potential words).

Right, you're basically overexposing yourself (in the srs environment) to certain words and grammar patterns. If the important part is the new unknown word you wnt to remember, is it not better to only put that word in the srs and then spend the remaining time you would spend reading sentences in the srs as time reading the same common words in new contexts? That's kind of my thought process now. I've worked through probably 5000+ sentences in srs by now so i'm rethinking how to spend my "study" time.

RTK will make you learn how to write 2042 general use kanji in ~3 months. It will also give you a keyword for that kanji, but it is not much important.

What RTK wont give to you:

- RTK wont give you any hability to read japanese.
- You have to learn how to read after doing RTK.

What RTK gives:

- RTK allows you to study japanese much more efficiently. You'll be able learn vocabulary for the kanji you already know.
- You will be able to study japanese from REAL sources, instead of just textbooks with furigana.
- You wont need to worry about the amount of kanji a book or a manga uses.
- You will LOVE kanji and see how logical and beautiful it is.
- Some time after doing the first 2042 kanjis you'll see they are actualy few and you'll want to learn more!

Who should try RTK:

- Anyone who wishes to atain full proficiency in reading and writing real japanese.

His video about quitting Anki is actually okay..

tl;dr:

Anki isn't actually designed very well. It's the most basic SRS that will work. (Note: modern supermemo is even worse - he doesn't say this but it's a thing)
He was addicted to SRSing obscure words (like someone memorizing a french dictionary) instead of using it to target specific problems with his Japanese (like his pitch accent problems).
SRSing obscure words fucked up his subconscious mode of how common what words for what things are.
Yes, SRS is still useful if you're really bad at Japanese.
He wants to make a killswitch addon that automatically deletes cards when their interval is too large.

Just don't fall for the rest of his advice. Most of his advice is really bad.

When considering whether to add a word to your SRS, you should be thinking, "Is this one of the most useful words that I don't know yet?" This is why I'm not a huge fan of Core 10K - because it's based on newspaper frequency lists, it has a lot of political/economic words that just aren't super relevant if you're most interested in reading manga or playing video games. That's not to say that you should NEVER learn them, but if you learn them as early as it tells you, those words aren't going to be reinforced in your daily life, and your knowledge of that word is going to be very limited and fragile. Learn them at the stage where you actually want to be reading newspaper articles about the latest political scandal or stock market crash, and have the ability to do so.

nothing you've said is incorrect but i wonder why you felt the need to say it, it's quite hard for someone to be wrong about literally everything. what fascinates me is wondering exactly how many years it took him to realize that becoming a human dictionary isn't getting better at japanese, yet he thinks he's enlightened enough to tell people the correct way to learn.

I posted it a few days ago. Here it is.

I just reached my goal of 60 raw anime episodes for the month, so I thought I'd give my opinion on them. These are all anime I watched when they aired so I have seen them before but it has been several years.

Boku dake ga Inai Machi: Could understand a decent amount, mostly the conversations between the kids. Most of the really important parts were too hard to understand.
Idolmaster: Understood quite a bit. I would recommend this one to other people who want to try watching raws.
Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry: Couldn't understand shit, especially the last 2 episodes. It was nice watching the last fight and being able to concentrate on the animation since I wasn't looking at subs.

I feel like my listening may have improved a little bit but not much. I am getting more comfortable with watching things I don't understand. Not sure if that is a good thing or not.

July update:
Shingeki no Kyojin: Felt a little easier than Rakudai Kishi, but I think that is because there is more action so you get more context. I started getting frustrated towards the end because I wasn't understanding enough, so I would sometimes pause and look at the Japanese subs in Firefox to understand certain lines.

I'm undecided on what I'm going to watch next. I think I really need to watch something easier, but I can't think of anything easy that I want to rewatch.

He's arguing with me that "xを置いてきた男" means 'The man that left x behind' rather than 'The man that x left behind'. His justification for this is the sentence is 'ご飯を食べた犬', where even though technically the subject marker comes at the end, the sentence still means 'The dog ate food'.

I've never come across subject markers being placed at the end of a sentence while reading so I'm happy to be wrong at this point. I honestly just want him off my back.

I guess I'm just getting confused because I naturally assumed that if there's a subject marker, it's telling me to pay attention to the fact that this is the thing that is currently carrying out an action or is the subject of what's being said.

So just to clarify, in "xを置いてきた男", 男 is the one doing the leaving behind? Not 'x left behind man' to put it crudely?

i don't know japanese but my amateur understanding is that を definitely marks what was left behind and は is basically just omitted here, but an omitted は could either be specifically marking 男 as who carried out the action of leaving x behind, or left-x-behind could be an adjective describing 男 who is being introduced as a subject for a different discussion. just nuance, and maybe one of these options is unnatural or wrong.

>> No.19345102

Here you go, the 20 most common recursively included components in RTK:
一 210
口 145
日 131
氵 119
木 107
亻 101
土 96
月 86
扌 81
艹 69
亠 67
丿 66
丷 65
言 64
十 62
宀 61
人 58
丶 56
心 56
辶 55

This is, of course, correctly not decomposing things like 頁, but it absolutely does decompose things like 研 (i.e. it would count both 研 and both components in it).

人 is there. 亻, which is 人, is also there, very high.

So, tell me, why are 木 and 人 introduced at such different times when they're similarly common?

Why is 木 taught in the first couple hundred when 人 gets to wait until half way through? They're both similarly common and are similarly unlikely to be used in common compound components.

Your argument that it's ordering is doing what you say it's doing is simply not consistent with the facts.

By the way, the reason is because RTK's ordering wasn't actually designed the way you're claiming it is, and if Heisig said somewhere that it is, either he's lying or he's incredibly incompetent.

>no, again, sheer frequency of a component is not what matters. what matters is introducing frequent components in such a way that you can combine them for your mnemonics.
again, the only reason this is confusing for you because for some reason you're thinking in terms of sheer frequency of a component. but to highlight why this is retarded, imagine 人 showed up 100 times. but each time it showed up it was combined with a different, unique component. imagine 木 showed up 100 times. but 40% of the time it shows up, 口 is also a component, the other 40% of the time, 一 is a component. it would make more sense to teach the latter 3 so you can combine them to create mnemonics.

Just finished reading ReLIFE and it was great. It was the first manga I've ever completed, in English or Japanese. Most of the time when I try to read manga, the art style is significantly worse than the anime, so I lose interest instantly, but ReLIFE's art is much better than the anime. It is really beautiful and the entire thing is in color. I highly recommend it, although I found some parts to be difficult and had to consult the translation ever 2-3 chapters.

There are a few problems with reading it though.
1. It is a webcomic, not a manga. Basically that means that each chapter is 1 really long image that you scroll down to read. Trying to read it like a normal manga doesn't work well. I had to write a program to combine each chapter's images into a webpage so I could read it correctly.
2. The raws have some blank speech bubbles. I think they were erasing the text before doing the English translation and overwrote the original raws. Only affects 15-20 pages our of 5k+, so it isn't a huge deal.

I saved everything that I looked up while reading it. Not really sure why I did it, but thought someone might be interested.

You're given too much of a contextual hint as to what the word means. Using SRS flashcards correctly only guarantees that you are improving your ability to remember the back of the card based on the front of the card.

You can certainly get better at recognizing words even if they're in a sentence card, but it's definitely the case that the sentence is a huge hint, and people often complain of remembering the back of the card before they even get to the word at all.

Any increase in ability to remember the meaning/reading of a word from sentence cards should be considered a bonus, just like when using exposure cards. They can certainly help with individual words but there's no guarantee that they'll improve your ability to recognize that word beyond a certain point or outside of that sentence.

I've finally reached native level fluency. Here's some advice. Stop now. It's not worth it. When you're a beginner, knowing Japanese looks like it will be the greatest thing in the world. It's not.
