This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

your stats don't look awful, but you're right that you should be reading.
easy shit that interests you enough that you can push through it even when you suck. use a dictionary for every word you're unsure on, and a grammar dictionary when you have no idea what a particle or conjugation is doing, but don't obsess over every detail. you will have to give up on some lines and that's okay. even the lines you think you get you will often be missing something or wrong and that's okay. your understanding will improve as you start to have expectations for what might be said and, consciously or subconsciously, notice when and how those expectations are broken.
there are wrong things to start reading, but there is no right thing to start reading. yotsuba is the default suggestion, it's okay once you get used to the dialect, but that part can be a bit hard. anything is fine as long as you can work out some of the sentences and your understanding is good enough that you want to keep pushing forward. when you start to feel like you have a pretty good understanding of the majority of lines, it might be time to push yourself with something harder.

How is your listening practice going? Mine is going pretty well. I'm going to hit my goal of 60 episodes well before the end of the month.

If you have already seen Idolmaster and liked it, I recommend it for listening practice. There is a lot of easy to understand conversations, and even if you can't understand much, it is pretty easy to follow the plot. It was a lot different than I remember. I thought some character arcs lasted 5 episodes, but they were actually only 1-2.

I'm about to watch the movie, which I'm going to count as 5 episodes because it is 2 hours long. I have no idea what I'm going to watch after that. Everything I want to rewatch, like Eureka 7, Macross, or Full Metal Panic, seem too hard. I guess I can try Cinderella Girls, but I only watched the first season and didn't like it much.

I've been listening to podcasts every morning and evening but hkbk is going to end in a couple episodes and I don't know what to do. I might rip the audio from ReLIFE or download some drama cds. I wish hkbk wasn't ending though -- how am I going to know what's popular in Japan?
I feel you on the sci-fi shows though. It's though to catch technical words when you aren't used to hearing them.

>yotsuba is the default suggestion
That's true, but there is a problem with it being suggested to people who want to read. If he wanted to start reading he wouldn't use yotsuba because you don't read yotsuba. Yotsuba is a manga and manga isn't reading.

Hourly reminder that IGN Japan is outstanding listening practice for intermediate-level learners looking for genuine conversational Japanese and not news-tier shit or fucked up Anime shit.

>ゲームの神様に20の質問 is 神様-tier for learning how to contemplate/deliberate/etc
>The regular game talk segments are enjoyable to listen to
>Vocabulary and grammar are mostly simple and will make you a pro at incomplete sentences left hanging on the て form, conditionals, filler words, non-news-tier conjunctions, かどうか'ing everything, and much more

IGN US version is not known for quality, but this is sort of a window into what is possible if you have good quality and reasonable people putting together a show.

>Words see LOTS of repetitive use and you'll get used to their usage very quickly after just a few hours

So you can't see why someone might want to learn how to talk about current events? It's ok, I'm sure the words 地震 and 台風 are 100% useless and never get used IRL. I'm sure nobody ever talks about 安倍総理大臣, アメリカのトランプ大統領, or 北朝鮮のキム労働党委員長 and clearly you don't need to know those titles. I'm also certain that nothing ever comes up in real life conversation about 世界経済, プロ野球, or people passing out from 熱中症 in the heat of 夏.

Look, the news isn't exciting, but if you're expecting to learn everything you need to know about a language from cartoons and manga then I have some terrible news for you.

>> No.19250620

You're making quite the large assumption there. What if he only wants to consume anime and manga? In that case all the language he needs to know is the language found in anime and manga.

This is some super shitty advice to give to anyone. If you want to understand the language, you have to receive input from a diverse range of sources and not just "stuff I like." Believe it or not, there will be things and stories that genuinely interest you on the news, scenarios that will have you on the edge of your seat in dramas and talk shows, and lots of interesting speech patterns/adjectives/etc in product/game/film reviews.

Anime and Manga often assume that you have some kind of experience with the real life usage of the language. I'm not saying you can't learn some Japanese from them, but you're seriously hurting yourself if you don't expand those limited horizons.

Did Lingodeer for a few months which was useful for understanding sentence structure, but I've since replaced that with Anki and Japanese the Manga way about a month ago. Went through Tae Kim a few months and could not for the love of me remember the kanji vocabs 1-10 minutes after *learning* them. Forget its reading I couldn't even give a clue on what the meaning was. That's after wasting 10 minutes scribbling it on a notebook. Skip to yesterday, I skimmed through TK and it was like a miracle. The kanji i've come across in RTK so far stood out like bleeding letters in the compound kanji's. I was able to guess the meaning 8/10 times and the readings I memorized I can still recall today. also the benefit appears to be bigger when most of the words you don't know are extremely easy and intuitive, and for those words would it really matter if you learned 水 and 道 as water and roadway or if you learned them through みず and みち before you encountered 水道?
i will admit there may be a benefit to focusing on a couple hundred kanji so that you get better at seeing them as kanji and not as blobs. but 2000 or 3000? i began to find that hard to believe as i got closer. i'd rather only worry about kanji that appear in words i know at this point, and not worry about how quickly i get through x number of kanji, it's not like if you finish RTK you'll be done with kanji anyway

I would argue someone who's done rtk can learn vocabs faster than one who hasn't. In order to memorize a kanji vocab you need to recall how it looks, distinguish it from similar looking looking pictures whether it be a dot here, a slash there, 2 1/2 more horizontal lines on the top etc. You need to attach this blob to its meaning and finally learn the multiple readings through gradual context. 2/3 is done in RTK. Giving 3 months to gain this perk is worth more than your grinding.

>> No.19253244

>>19253207
i don't have a strong opinion on this
i see problems with arguments in both directions
i don't think that additional context is cheating and while it certainly is not a replacement for reading i think there's a little bit of value in coming back to a sentence that you thought was educational a few more times at SRS-guided intervals
it also helps you avoid making one card for two readings and four different uses of one word, which i consider to be a bad idea
but it's also a little slower and you don't look as carefully at the kanji
my overall suggestion is it doesn't matter, pick one, read more, worry less about how optimal your anki usage is

>> No.19253271

>>19253244
>but it's also a little slower and you don't look as carefully at the kanji
I never look carefully at the kanji any way even if it's 四字熟語. Normal words, I'll look at the おくりがな or whatever for hints. Basically, I'm always relying on some sort of context to make things easier.

all of that happens either way, the question is if the slightly higher difficulty of each word with a new kanji is a larger loss of time than 3 months of rtk, and the answer is that no one knows but personally i regret not reading earlier

a given sentence is a particular context, not context in general
the purpose of flashcards is to build an association between the spelling, reading, and meaning of a given word, when you have sentences on the front then you also build an association with that particular sentence
if you have cards with just the spelling on the front then you're also training your ability to ignore everything else and recognize the word from its spelling alone; this is a very minor thing but it's better than nothing

if you already know 7k words then RTK will be wasting your time making you create useless associations with english words even when you already have something to associate the kanji with
if you want to be able to write kanji, i guess do cloze on unambiguous words or short sentence fragments that are you already know, optionally with furigana. i don't have a suggestion for 旧字体 or alternate forms but you can figure something out. don't bother learning kanji that aren't used in any word you know, and it's not a great idea to learn a word just because it uses a kanji you want to learn.

Why does core 10k still use English translations?
Aren't 6000 words enough to start using a J-J dictionary? There is a minimum set of words needed for your look-up sequence not to turn into an infinite loop, and I'm pretty sure that set is smaller than 6000 (well, at least in English it is).

This is just from personal experience, but I find printing them all out and copying them by hand is the most efficient way to remember kanji (pro tip: tracing them saves some time). Once you've done that, you're probably ready to practice speaking, so just go outside and use all the kanji you learned over the last 2 years (as per the above) by narrating your life as best you can out loud. Film it and review it daily to monitor your sick moon gainz. Lastly, move to Japan and teach English. Good luck, cunt.

and what impact does it have to hear someone else's opinion on that
easy shit becomes intuitive approximately as fast as easy sentences are understandable without thinking about them, which isn't really very long
even if someone did pay enough attention to have an answer, it depends on how hard what they're reading is, too hard or too easy is less productive

>There is no way to differentiate nano/no in the sense he describes from the possessive no

It takes quite a while to truly tell what every piece of grammar means, but the idea of grammar is overrated you start to feel the nihongo and can understand what your reading even though you don't "know" the grammar
