This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

Question from a beginner. I know kana and my first 70ish kanji. Got to second grade in memrise and now I hate it.
I got penalized for saying "a little, a few" instead of "a few, a little" when asked to describe 少 , and penalized again for saying "many" instead of "many, much" for 多 .
Please tell me I'm correct in dropping this and that I don't actually have to consider the explicit order of english meanings while learning. It seems totally unnecessary.

it's a myth, it's easy to be surrounded by a language and still stay in your native language bubble where it's safe, and believing in the myth is likely to decrease your actual study time under the bullshit belief that "i'll just pick it up for free the easy way"
it's more true for languages that don't have absolute shitloads of media that you can get from anywhere in the world, but the "oh man i'll hear conversations on the street and there will be kanji signs on the roads and i'll have to speak japanese to get by" is absolute bullshit, especially in japan where everyone will just talk to you in english on first sight and if you try to push the conversation into japanese but you suck at japanese they wont let you because it's exhausting to talk to someone who sucks at a language
and if you are good enough to hold a competent conversation, you don't actually have to be in japan for that, but the pitfalls may be less of an issue

Memrise is not a very good app for learning Japanese. I've used it for too long and literally when I switched to Anki did I actually start mem(o)rizing things. I think it may be useful if you're planning a trip and just want to learn some stock phrases to use in the restaurants but that's not learning a language. Maybe it's also good for other languages, I dunno.

It's bizarre how Memrise got such amazing reviews from so many people when it's really so shit. It boasts that it was chosen as the best app of 2017 or something and I really can't see why. Not even the little level up system that's meant to keep people addicted worked when I was still using it since the amount of experience you need to level up the little mascot thing increases exponentially - like, you're playing for several months to get your guy to level 10, and then you need to get the same amount of exp AGAIN to get him to level 11. Who likes this? Even people who make those shitty freemium Candy Crush games know that you need to reward players every now and then to keep their interest.

At least when you use Anki you can use your own judgment for things that are trivial (like the difference between 'few' and 'little'). And imo the statistics it outputs give you more of a sense of progress.

Because learning on the go is attractive for many people? Convenience is the primary reason, and smartphones are ideal for learning on the go. Not everyone knows about Anki, and I think that very often people just enter something like 'language app' or 'learn Japanese' or whatever in the Google Play search bar and pick whatever got the best reviews. After all, if so many people have downloaded it and given it praise, it has to be good, right?

Not sure how you linked that post to reddit, maybe you've developed the mental reflex to call everything you don't like 'reddit'. Maybe you need to change something in your life instead of blaming all your problems on a website you hate.

Apps are really good for practice, but attempting to learn from them will always be a bad idea. There's just no way to comfortably convey an entire lesson on a mobile phone.

The only one I use anymore is the Anki app, because it's just flashcards. Everything else is a grammar book, Japanese TV, and internet resources. Tried Lingodeer for a bit. It's a decent start, but too slow and doesn't review enough for my liking.

There isn't a magical pill app that has everything and the quicker people realize that the quicker they can make real progress.

There's no resource that will do everything for you but there's still a distinction between apps that can be helpful (like Anki) and those that will just waste your time (like Memrise). Have you seen any "conjugation sites" in the guide? No you didn't. Why were there no conjugation sites in the guide? Because they are utter and irredeemable shit, just like mobile applications. What does the guide have on conjugations? It has Tae Kim. If you have read Tae Kim you wouldn't need to bother us with the most basic questions about Japanese grammar, since Tae Kim explains it. I've been learning Japanese for several months now and as far as pronunciation goes I've got a decent understanding but I just can't figure out the difference between さ,す,せ,そ and ざ,ず,ぜ,ぞ.
Googling this has proven surprisingly hard and any tutorial or explanation I could find didn't help. In video tutorials they sound exactly the same to me and the best explanation I could find was that [s] is an unvoiced sound while [z] is a voiced one which really doesn't help me.

I'm confused why this isn't a more common pronunciation question in the way the [r] sound is. But maybe English speakers pick up on this naturally and I as a German speaker don't.

Anyway, I would really appreciate a clear and easy answer. Hope this question is okay for the thread. Thanks.

what is "grammar studies", you read through tae kim without practice over a period of a couple of weeks and then you read and refer to a grammar reference when you are confused, you don't regularly spend an hour on a textbook, that's what you do in a class that is designed to get you exchanging broken introductions and talking about the weather with classmates asap so that they can tell the education board "yeah they can speak that's what we're supposed to do right"

宇宙飛行士の金井宣茂さんが、日本の時間の三日、宇宙船に乗って地球に帰ってきました。
Astronaut Kanai Norishige took a spaceship back to earth on the 3rd (japan time).
カザフスタンに着いた金井さんは、宇宙船から出ると、笑って手を振りました。
Kanai-san, who arrived in Kazakhstan, smiled and waved his hands after leaving the spaceship.
金井さんは、去年12月から国際宇宙ステーションで仕事をしていました。
Kanai-san worked on the ISS since december last year.

why are you translating
come up with the best understanding you can without attempting to translate entire sentences as if japanese grammar has a direct english equivalent, ask if you think you understand something but you think it's possible you might be way off, and give up if you've you're not getting anywhere with a sentence
you're trying to let japanese make you think of concrete ideas and events, not let japanese make you think of english grammar, the time you spent doing this was not more productive than the core act of reading the article and checking jisho or google a couple of times.

Like if you're saying ポケト instead of ポケット it sounds like 'potato' whereas the latter sounds like 'pocket' with an 'o' at the end, which is more accurate.

And people will actually notice since these are not English words spoken by Japanese people, they are loan words, meaning that they're Japanese words with an English origin. You can't just pronounce them however you like.

I'm a beginner (few months) so maybe it's unrealistic to throw romanji out the window for a while, but I know there comes a point where I shouldn't need it anymore. Ideally I'd like to wean myself off it (or at least START to do so) as soon as possible...but I can't seem to find a strategy to learn that doesn't involve writing the romanji next to the hiragana over and over (and over...and over...) and just hoping the sound-to-hiragana connection cements eventually. For instance, I spent ages yesterday just trying to drill ittekimasu* and itte*rasai into my head, but no amount of writing いってきます/ "I will go and come back" and いってらっさい / Please go and come back" made me actually remember the sounds that are connected to those definitions even though I can read the hiragana fine. The only reason I know them now is because I begrudgingly omitted hiragana from the equation and learned the vocab in romanji when it should be the other way around. The only reason I know them now is because I begrudgingly omitted hiragana from the equation and learned the vocab in romanji when it should be the other way around. I feel like this shouldn't be this hard.

otherwise, reading "starts getting comfortable" at 500-1000 words, which is about how many of the words in the 3k core were actually beneficial to you for the beginner trash you are reading
