You should just read what you want to read. I mean, that is my primary motivation for learning the language. There is a ton of fiction I want to read in Japanese. Basically, studying via reading is already a part of goal since I'm reading the stuff I always wanted to read and that alone motivates me to continue.

If you are unsure or demotivated because of progress then in my case reading took a long time and could get a bit annoying in the beginning since it took so long to think about the sentences and look up words but around the time I hit I think 1400 words in Core JPN Anki deck things became noticeably much more easier and swift.

Reposting from last thread for the anons asking about how to more easily look up the contents of Japanese subtitles, since it died shortly after I posted:
This is meant for use on Linux, and you'll probably have to modify the script somehow to make it work with Windows, as I'm using the "xsel" utility to manipulate the clipboard, and I haven't used Windows for anything but the occasional game in years so I don't know how the clipboard is managed on a Windows system. That said, here's how I do it:
I play the anime I'm watching with mpv, having added the subtitles I want to use by dragging the file into the window. Then, I use a simple lua script (which you just need to put into the scripts folder. On Linux, that would be /home/YOURUSERNAME/.config/mpv/scripts/ . /jp/ doesn't allow posting of code, so I've uploaded it to doko as a .txt file: https://a.doko.moe/uwufar.txt
save that as a .lua and put it in your scripts folder.
Set up firefox for text-hooking as described in the Cornucopia (Steps 2 & 3 from here: http://pastebin.com/raw/DgZ84qwk (embed)), it would be redundant for me to explain that here.
Now just press "a" at any time while watching Japanese subbed anime and the currently displayed line of text will appear in Firefox, ready to be manipulated by your mouse-over dictionary of choice.

Actual diagnosed ADD here, I struggled a lot early due to attention and university, at one point (3 months in or so) I had 63% retention with 20 new cards per day on Core. I decreased it to 10 or so for a few months, then did 7(core) + 7(mine), then when I reached 2000 in core I quit it and just did 15 of mining every day, now (10 months in) I'm mining 20 new words a day with a stable 80% retention (in the mining deck, core2k is 96% (so overall 87%).

Sure, the adderall neets here will probably call me retarded (I probably am) for being so slow to start with and I mean if I had done 20 words every day without decreasing rates and skipping I'd know 1500 words more by now, but it was a sacrifice I had to make and the situation is stabilized and I'm back to the target pace and I'll probably get to start my ADD meds soon.

Point is it gets better, if you're having trouble just chill at your own pace until you get a hang of it, you eventually will.

Torrents seem dead but usually at least one of them will be alive. It's just that since the original Nyaa went down, all the tracker info was lost so the new Nyaa isn't aware of the seeds on older torrents (especially on sukebei).

If you try downloading either the 2D.G.F. or GirlCelly release, usually one or both of those will be seeded. Also, pay attention to the column with the tick mark in it - that shows you how many people have successfully downloaded the torrent, so anything with a number higher than 0 in that column has a chance of being seeded.

Here is something interesting from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management
>Ubisoft broke with the tendency to use online DRM in late 2008, with the release of Prince of Persia as an experiment to "see how truthful people really are" regarding the claim that DRM was inciting people to use illegal copies.[32] Although Ubisoft has not commented on the results of the "experiment", Tweakguides noted that two torrents on Mininova had over 23,000 people downloading the game within 24 hours of its release.[33]

possible is different from simple and accessible. it is disingenuous to pretend the examples you've listed are not a service problem. keep blaming greed, it's easier if you have a target. let's back up something that actually is relevant to further up the reply chain:
the claim was that japanese firms are reluctant to sell overseas because of piracy. the subject of piracy of media not officially sold overseas is largely irrelevant to such a claim. there is no measure of how much is imported because it is not imported by the distribution, it is imported by various third parties. the amount of "legal" overseas interest is hard to estimate. the relevant measure is of piracy of media that is licensed, or piracy of western media that would drum up a fear.
if you had a clue what you were talking about, you would have better presented yourself recycling the usual argument: if you want more japanese media available in your country, buy what is available to you through official sources to show it is worthwhile for them to do. importing with a proxy does not go far to accomplish that.
i'm surprised you didn't go for that considering you went so far as to defend drm. it's still a shit argument, by the way, but it's less embarrassingly naive.

Yes. I already had mental dictionaries for the most common several thousand words, including the different uses of homophones and an accurate understanding of pitch accent and prosody. I just didn't have the mental machinery for correctly parsing or generating things because the English subs basically acted as a barrier that caused language deprivation.

It sort of is, but if you don't understand half of what you hear, it's difficult to pick out unknown words using only your hearing. But at the same time, Japanese subs are not the same as English subs, you do listen to what the characters say so you get used to the way the words you already know _sound_ in a sentence. Reading can't give you that.

>Yes, you can easily learn to read kanji just fine without anything like RTK. Actually, that is what I did, as when I first started AJATT I ignorantly used "lazy kanji" and ended up having to delete my whole deck a few months after finishing. And just as you, I had (almost) no trouble learning how to recognize characters. If you truly have zero interest in being able to write characters out by hand, then I would pretty much say it's fine to skip RTK.

Why is it that official Japanese subs are so hard to come by? About the only anime studio that seems to put them out consistently is KyoAni, but besides that you rarely ever find them outside of movies.

Also, when there are actually official subs, why do so many people insist on converting them to .SRT format knowing that the OCR process involved is going to result in a bunch of errors?

Heisig:
>The aim of this book is to provide the student of Japanese with a simple method for correlating the writing and the meaning of Japanese characters in such a way as to make them both easy to remember.
>Meantime, remembering the meaning and the writing of the kanji—perhaps the single most difficult barrier to learning Japanese—can be greatly simplified if the two are isolated and studied apart from everything else.
>Each kanji is assigned a key word that represents its basic meaning, or one of its basic meanings. The key words have been selected on the basis of how a given kanji is used in compounds and on the meaning it has on its own.
>By simplifying the meanings through the use of key words, however, one becomes familiar with a kanji and at least one of its principal meanings.
(Ignoring the million lines where he says "primitive meanings", which is obviously wrong considering how brain damaged many of Heisig's primitive meanings are)
>It will soon become apparent that the most critical factor is the order of learning the kanji.
Editor's note: "order of learning the kanji" is in italics.
>The method presented here needs to be learned step by step, lest one 3nd oneself forced later to retreat to the first stages and start over; 20 or 25 characters per day would not be excessive for someone who has only a couple of hours to give to study.
>In the fourth place, it is important to note that the best order for learning the kanji is by no means the best order for remembering them. They need to be recalled when and where they are met, not in the sequence in which they are presented here. For that purpose, recommendations are given in Lesson 5 for designing flash cards for random review.
>That having been said, the goal of this book is still to attain native proficiency in writing the Japanese characters and associating their meanings with their forms.

Hello, it's me >>19195627 again
I'm back to hopefully give you some more constructive advice, yesterday I was trying to convince you to work harder through ridicule as that's what works well for me, but anyway:
It's not a matter of having better or worse memory, you're doing Anki wrong. The point isn't to agonize over every card and try to remember it really hard. If it comes to you naturally in a few seconds you can hit good. Otherwise, hit again. I used to have the same problem as you, and as much Anki as you're doing now used to take me a while as well. It's easy to end up nervous and fretting, thinking "oh man, I really gotta get this card right, or else that'll mean even more reviews tomorrow," but the reality is that if you just power through the cards naturally, choosing an answer in a few seconds (10 at the most), the overall time it will take you will significantly decrease. Additionally, it does get easier over time. Your brain will get more and more accustomed to learning Japanese words and it'll take fewer repetitions of each word to get them committed to memory. Of course, you'll forget mature cards here and there, but that's only natural when you're juggling thousands of words at a time. The guys on here that talk about how your retention has to be above a certain level, or else it's all for naught, are shitposters. As long as your long-term retention is above 50%, you're making progress. Slow, hellish, worst-case-scenario progress, but progress nonetheless. 75% or 80% aren't exactly great either, but it's infinitely better than quitting.

though I'm not really having troubles with anki, I understand I just need to leave it up to the spaced repetition to take care of it and my retention is pretty consistently above 80% towards 90% (does this mean I should be doing more new cards?).
I'm not complaining about the amount of cards, I can handle a few 100 cards no problem if I don't have anything else I need to do, I was just showing that they all stacked up.

My main problem was no motivation from lack of progress when I read, but after thinking about it for a bit you're probably right, I should just stop being a fucking faggot and read more, it'll sort itself out eventually right.
Honestly I didn't even read that much, but that's partially because of needing to do other things. I've got some free time now though so I'm going to read a lot more.

>my retention is pretty consistently above 80% towards 90% (does this mean I should be doing more new cards?).
The much more important thing you need to consider when you decide how many new cards you should be doing isn't your retention, it's "how quickly do I want to be done with this?"
In your screenshot you're doing 6 new cards, and that's really a low, low number. I recommend you at least try to do 20 for a good few months. It's the most popular number (and the default on Anki if I recall correctly?) for a reason -- it strikes a balance between speed and manageability. Allow me to put things in perspective: I started doing Anki for Core6k in December 2016, right after the N5. I've added 20 new cards almost every day, turning it off when I had something else urgent going on, like a big exam for Physics or whatever. In a few weeks, before the end of June, I'll be done with Core10k. At 20 words a day, I was able to acquire a vocabulary of ten thousand words in a little over a year and a half.
If I had done six cards per day, I would currently have a vocabulary of 2,500 words. I wouldn't have passed the N2 in December of 2017 with those numbers. It would take me nearly six years to get a vocabulary of 10,000. Do you really want to still be grinding Anki five years from now? And despite it all, still have less than half of the vocabulary of a native(based on an estimate of the average 日本人's vocabulary to be ~25,000 words)?s

So yes, you should be doing more new cards. Even if your retention drops by 10%, your progress will be nearly four times as fast.
>I should just stop being a fucking faggot and read more, it'll sort itself out eventually right.
This is correct.

>> No.19201045

core is garbage but it's not completely unreasonable to familiarize yourself with some of the most common shit so that you only have to look up 90% of the words in the dictionary instead of 100%. it's still not learning, but the memorization isn't completely worthless for that. 2000 before even starting to read though is putting off reading for too long. i started at like 750 and it didn't take long until it stopped feeling bad.
>>19201009
grammar is a separate issue, but similarly you wont actually learn it without reading, and tae kim is just to get familiar. reading with zero words is definitely worse than reading with at least 500, but it is very much underestimated how diminishing the returns are, and if you completed 10k before reading you'd still suffer significantly because recalling the association you've made in anki isn't as valuable as it seems.

The core of a statement is the "predicate" (the verb and its objects) and its "subject" (the thing doing or experiencing the verb). Everything that isn't included in the "predicate" and "subject" is "adverbial" information, because grammar people gave up figuring stuff out at that point.

This part is unintuitive exactly because there are so many different kinds of words that have the same role: shoving new information into a statement that is already complete and not accepting new information.

Note that the "subject" and "predicate" can contains multiple phrases, like "very red dog" is just a noun as far as syntax is concerned.

One kind of adverbial information is when you just have adverbs. I came early.

Another kind of adverbial information is when you have to stuff something like a specific location or time into a statement that doesn't directly involve it. Sometimes there are nouns that can just be stuffed into a sentence like the "outside" in "I came outside" and they make perfect sense.

When you need to use a noun that can't do that, you need to use a preposition, like the "to" in "I came to the yard". The preposition also tells you what kind of relationship it has to the statement.

Nouns that can act like adverbs, like "outside", have this relationship built in.

Also words that modify adjectives are called adverbs because why the fuck not.

Japanese particles are called particles instead of postpositions because some of them can be used to mark grammatical case (non-adverbial information), which proper prepositions/postpositions cannot do.

English lacks a bunch of grammatical cases and uses prepositional phrases in place of them. One of the possible reasons why words like "outside" exist is that the brain is attaching case information to them despite the lack of preposition, but normal nouns can't use that case information without a preposition. This is where linguistics and grammar diverge, and grammar cares about syntax, wheras linguistics these days gives up on attempting to categorize anything and instead just describes what kinds of rules seem to exist and tries to break them to see if they're really right.

tl;dr: Grammar terminology is hard to understand because grammar theories are all defective and unintuitive whenever things get complicated. The only ways out are to shut up and memorize it or to study basic linguistics so you can short shit out yourself.
