Dear /jp/,

I recently quit my Japanese Studies degree, with an aim of moving to Japan in the near future. Having never lived in any country other than England, have any of you got any advice on such a move..?

The move isn't permanent, but I will living out there hopefully for an extended period.

In before weabo or any other such sillyness.

Mostly because of family connections, but also because Japan takes a much more lax approach to their Far-Eastern relations. It's also relatively easy to get a fake degree in China. The best you'll be able to get is a 3 month visitor Visa.

There's also the fact that finding any kind of accommodation without a sponsor/guarantor is very difficult. Expect to pay upwards of £500 a month for a 4m by 4m guesthouse (shared bathroom, kitchen between about 8 people). Of course, that's if you want to be in a big city, outside of the big cities, things will be even more difficult.

You can get jerked around a lot with student visas when applying for a japanese university. It's a tricky process without sponsorship from a partner institution at home.

Not to mention that "Japanese" is hardly a major you can graduate with.

You should have gone to a decent University and done Japanese, like Leeds for example.

Anyway, you'll still need to do JLPT if you want to get into a proper Japanese University.

The only quick fix available is doing a good TESOL course, but even then, many employers in Japan will see you don't have an Undergraduate and probably ignore you for people with them.

Maybe you should go to Korea.

Most do have their own tests nowadays I think, a change from the 90s when it was JLPT1 or nothing. You're probably right about undergrad, but I'm pretty sure the equivalent to at least JLPT2 would be required. I mean, most Japanese finish JLPT1 at the end of Junior High School when they're 15.

The best way to get into Japan and get a decent career (ie, not be a JET, ALT, etc), is to get any degree, learn Japanese in your own free time, do the JLPT tests and get a crappy teaching job (JET, ALT, etc). Once you're in Japan, keep learning the language, look for better teaching jobs inside Japan. Once you're fluent and have a few years working in a more respectable teaching job, you'll probably be able to find translator, corporate teaching or maybe even private school management positions.

I wouldn't be surprised if undergrad still had strict requirements, I'm going by how much english people have to know to attend a under graduate course at my university which isn't that demanding.

Probably comparing apples and oranges there.

Thing with work visas is that mobility is restrictive due to how the sponsorship system works. No company looks within the country to recruit people on work visas, you're as stuck as someone in JET until you don't need to maintain a work visa anymore.
