Lion is designed to look androgynous and not give a shit about gender. S/He's a fantasy character imagined by Yasu. Lion's world is clearly full of fantasy bullshit, too. It's not real. Also to seriously think that Lion's gender is interpretable is delusional. Yes it kept vague and not specifically stated, but it's far from not being accurately discerned.

On the note of Furfur and Zepar, while r07 obviously can change their genders to what he wants given the story, and both demons are historically male, Zepar is most likely the male in Umineko as Zepar is known for seducing men by taking the form of a young boy. Not to mention Zepar has a masculine voice and personality within Umineko.

I was going through an old hard drive and found a flac rip of Musicbox Blue that I did a long time ago. I noticed that there are no seeds for the torrent on nyaa, but this is my own rip so I don't think the checksums will match if I try and seed it there. Does anyone else think that the scene where Keiichi kills Satoko's uncle loses A LOT of atmosphere with the PS2 art? And not just that scene, the entire night of Watanagashi in that chapter loses the atmosphere.

The PS2 forest background doesn't look dark enough. You couldn't see shit in the original background, while this one seems to be more focused on looking pretty and not hiding any details with darkness that it fails to achieve its real purpose. It fails to create the same atmosphere of darkness and confusion in the middle of a forest.

The Jokrono playthrough is a great way to reread the series. And I like the voices slightly more than the official ones. Seriously.

It happened both to me and the French translator of Higurashi. We both abandoned the theory later when Ryukishi went all out with the tricks and the glitters... And the theory was proven right in the end. It leaves a bizarre taste in my mouth.

Shannon being Kanon was obvious to me literally the first time I saw Kanon. Slender cross-dressing traps with a double identity seemed just on par for the genre, and their name were close enough.

In a way I wasn't completely off, but to say you can reach the full truth in the first 4 games is really unlikely. At best, you can get as far as Battler did with his moetrice without understanding the last layer of magic and the 1000 years of torture that plays into the real motive. I really doubt anyone, Japanese or otherwise would have been able to keep themselves from plastering their revelation everywheere before episode 5 was released. At the very least you are going to be getting spoilers you can't avoid from somewhere that will seep into your unconscious, and just in general being given a Red Truth that you can solve the mystery without magic by people wanting you to play the game is huge boon compared to playing on release. If you watch the anime without knowing the source material, Mion, Ooishi, Irie, Akasaka and many others are pretty much non-characters. They are flat as a board and you don't give a shit about them, which is fucking tragic. K1 is also pretty bland because the first SIX arcs are so focused on the gore and the crazy DEEN faces that it completely ignores most of the drama. Also, the story is seemingly full of "plotholes" and the last arc is so rushed and poorly directed that you don't know what the fuck is going on with all these characters and non-characters running around and doing confusing shit until the final showdown.

If you watch the anime after reading the novel, you will actually care about all the characters, understand their motivations and understand what the fuck is going with the poorly told story. But you'll also get mad every time they completely skip hugely important scenes.

It's sad that so many fans never bother to read the Higurashi VN and think they know the story. The anime is an edgy clusterfuck devoid any depth. You can't declare that Umineko is better (whether it really is or not) when you only watched a bastardized version of Higurashi.

But I started with the original version and I am re-reading the PS3 Version now so it's a totally different experience I suppose. It is still enjoyable but it's a bit bothersome for me to know the "culprit" of every episode and shannon/kanons true identity, that kind of distorts the impact of some scenes.

Higurashi really suffers when you "update" it. The voices are great, but they kind of kill the atmosphere.

For example, I found the story of the old man in the forest being killed by his son really disturbing for some reason. But having it voiced and narrated by Keiichi's mom makes it impossible to really imagine it. It loses the atmosphere.

Having top-notch voice acting is far from improve a "bit". When you hear the voice of characters, hear they expressed their emotion, it's far better experince as a whole.

I honestly wouldn't find Rena and Shion as creepy as they were if it not for voice. Same with Rika, one of the most charming aspect about her character is how Yukari Tamura switch between her mature and child-ish voice

I don't think that scene being completely ruined either. Yeah without voice, it's a better but with voice. It works fine in the narration

I played with the old translation (I also could not wait more), it has errors, and some music is missing (just download the patch and paste it in the game folder), but you can fully understand the rest of the story. The Steam version is a revision of the old translation.

EP5 and EP6 are the forgeries written him and Ikkuko AFTER they got their hands in Eva's diary, as she obviously went to them at some point after the Banquet and before Dawn (Ikkuko had the diary by then) accused her of murdering the family in amazing detail.

They pretty much knew about everything by the timethe Chiru forgeries came out, Erika being a convenient possibility to be used as a outside detective perspective that isn't Battler's they inserted in there (meta-wise, there are kakeras in which she does end up in the island).

EP5 seems to explore further motivations as for the information of Yasu's tragic past from when she was a baby, and what would be like if her motivations were to get some payback for what happened... Or so Ikkuko and Tohya theorized before, as by the end of EP5, Tohya remembers everything, tries to kill himself and end up in a wheelchair.

He then proceeds to describe what does HE interprets as being the true behind the incident in EP6 as the gamemaster who now comprehends how some things worked, finally having some closure for his own situation (except for the Ange thing, coming in a bit).

Then Ikkuko make a much colder and objective interpretation of her own given based on the information provided by Eva, and that's Episode 7 analyzing everything bit by bit as colder and systematically straight to the point as Willard Wright would do himself in the past with his stories (anyone who read those know that the Willard we have here is now the polar opposite of his old mentality in the Umineko metaworld, as he tries to give the heart some deserved emphasis now).

Then, we have EP8, which symbolizes a battle of perspectives between these two gamemasters regarding the story in hands and their own interpretation of the incident.

Umineko is fucking replete of symbolism of all kinds anyway, and this is one that was fairly explicitly explained by the very end of EP8, but i do understand the confusion, as you are supposed to reread having those particular elements in mind before reaching that conclusion. Unless of course, your memory is that good to connect all of the dots just after finishing the whole thing.
