How can I explain what 中二病 is to a foreigner who has no interest in Japanese subculture whatsoever?

Ok, here goes:

Chuuni-byo (中二病) is a mock-disease/insult derived from 中二, literally "second year of junior high" and 病気, disease.

It points to strange actions done by adolescent boys (although recently seen in girls) which is seemingly influenced from a twisted vision of what they think is cool and "mature".
These "cool and mature" actions intertwine with the adolescent need to appear special, and creates hilarious outcomes. It should be noted that these actions are usually inspired from anime/manga/games that the child was exposed to recently.

These actions include:

- Thinking you are actually not who you think you are, and that you are special (chosen one, messiah, child of a god etc)
- Thinking you're a ninja/mercenary/soldier/knight/vampire etc.
- That you have few dozen personalities, and act them out when you feel like it, because multiple personalities makes you look unique.
- Drinking black coffee with no sugar, since it's "cool and mature".
- Saying things like: "All adults are filthy. They are full of lies." and "I'm not going to be a salaryman when I grow up. I ain't gonna be a small cog being used by society."

What's wrong with that? People are boring and static

This is basically true.

I guess I failed at explaining it then, since it's different from western kids being fags in high school.
Also, most Chuuni-byo kids move onto Kouni-byo when they move to high school, so it's a different problem.

It's... damn it, I give up, I curse my lack of English skills.

i actually knew someone in high school that exhibited those traits.

she thought she was a spiritual warrior
she would often pretend she was in pain from being involved in a psychic attack
she thought she had invisible wings
she thought that if she tried really hard she could use magic like Lina Inverse.

So yeah, High Schoolers can ben just as retarded as elementary kids.
