I can't do it. How does anyone learn this fucking language? My reps keep piling up day after day because I can't remember any cards. I end every review session in tears. Tonight I had to just mash "good" for me last 20 cards because I could not remember them after having seen them several times in this same session. I'm not going to remember them tomorrow, just like I haven't been able to remember them for weeks. I don't understand, I did everything the guide said, how did it end up like this? Why can't I learn this? Why am I so dumb?

So, I'm assuming おかしい is used in the same manner that "funny" is sometimes used when describing something strange/suspicious.

So, おかしい can mean:
"That's funny" (amusing or comical).
"Now, that's funny" (Imagine a Detective saying that at a crime scene)

Is this correct?

So would やりやがった be something along the lines of "that fucker actually did it"? All I know is that やる is like する but...less formal? and やがった is a way of saying how the speaker dislikes what is being done, so 食べやがった is "[x] ate, and I don't like it".

Krashen called this level of input "i+1", where "i" is the learner's interlanguage and "+1" is the next stage of language acquisition.

A sentence I undestand all but one word would be an i+1. How is this the wrong usage of i+1?

>> No.19026950

>>19026945
That quote is completely wrong and does not represent what Krashen says. i is not anything at all. Krashen specifically always states that i doesn't mean anything.

i+1 is a concept, not a quality. You can't select or pick out or create a piece of i+1 input based on limiting the amount of unknown material or picking things that are easy to acquire. i+1 isn't something you can design deliberate study around.

It doesn't mean that there's exactly one, or any other specific number, of things that you don't know, with the rest being things you understand well.

i+1 is a thing that happens when you consume comprehensible input that contains anything you're still learning.

Aside from learning the pronunciations of words, grammar and vocabulary are the same thing: "language features".

There aren't exactly one uses of a given word or grammar pattern, by memorizing a specific example of it in a specific context you're unnaturally focusing on a single specific contextual sense of that word or grammar pattern.

Not only that, you're only training yourself to recognize it in that specific context, and you very well might not recognize it in other contexts. If you learn 素直 from porn, you're going to have a hard time recognizing what it really means in a newspaper, and vice versa.

Many common words even basically double as grammar features of their own, without having to mix the two together into "language features". This is why DoJG and HJGP have entries for things like 上げる and 限り.

>> No.19027123

Definitions aren't really senses. The different uses of 素直 aren't, and there are things about how words are used that go beyond "definitions" anyway, like this:

>There aren't exactly one uses of a given word or grammar pattern
"one" is being used to count a plural object here, which is a rare grammar pattern used when emphasizing the quantity of something relative to other possible quantities, and when the quantity itself is the "identity" of the noun phrase, not the counted object.

You can think of it like an implied "one point zero", which would only allow a plural treatment of the noun phrase, as is used.

You're never going to find things like these in any dictionary or grammar resource, and you're not going to know that you need to know them to have advanced language competence.

It's not just some random written language thing either. A few weeks ago someone here misused a really common word (I think it was 状況 or something) based on a J-E definition and the way it was used in an example sentence. When this was pointed out it sparked an hours-long argument about it.

Trying to give yourself an incremental syllabus is just going to make it so you don't know what you don't know, and give you a slightly distorted internal version of Japanese because you're focusing on things that are easy to be told about.

You can repair this over time, but it's not necessary to give yourself this trouble in the first place. You can mine whatever you want, but telling yourself it's incremental is a bad idea, and if the "i+1 sentences" meme doesn't reflect reality, making sentence cards isn't going to be much better than just making vocab cards with example sentences on the back.

What the fuck is this? How retarded are you? You can't read a simple guide in English, yet you want to read the runes? Well, dumb cunt, you're lucky I'm here to break it down for you, although I do wonder if you have any kind of reading comprehension making this effort pointless... So, first things first, don't even bother learning hiragana because it's basically the baby version of the language, and it's equivalent to learning how to read, write and speak from Tommy Pickles. What you should do is actually just cut straight to kanji, with the fastest way of learning the basic 3000 that you need to read a simple children's book being to print them all out and copy them by hand (pro tip: tracing them saves some time). Once you've done that, you're probably ready to practice speaking, so just go outside and use all the kanji you learned over the last 2 years (as per the above) by narrating your life as best you can out loud. Film it and review it daily to monitor your sick moon gainz. Lastly, move to Japan and teach English. Good luck, cunt.

Hello. For context I am an upper-intermediate/pre-advanced learner of Japanese, who has passed N2 but wants to reach N1 level and beyond.

However, as I progress in my studies, it seems like it is becoming more difficult to learn some kanji at the N1 and native speaker level because the meanings of many the kanji seem less concrete as you advance. For example I keep encountering the kanji 柄 and keep forgetting what it means even if I look it up in the dictionary every time I see it. Or there are kanji where the dictionary has definitions that have seemingly little to do with the compounds they are used in today.

I understand that I should be learning kanji in context. And I have made it a recent habit to try and read newspapers everyday. But when I look at the standard-usage kanji list, there are still many that have not shown up naturally in my readings.

My question is: what strategies/methods would you recommend using for kanji study at the advanced level so I would able to commit kanji with very specific meanings to memory? And what are ways I can encounter kanji that I have yet to encounter but are still important (i.e. recommended texts, newspapers, etc).

Hey guys. First post here but I have a question that's been driving me nuts. I often notice Japanese names written in English have symbols used to substitute extra letters. In a lot of subbed anime they drop these symbols.

An example would be the first name "Seishirō". See the symbol above the "o"? It can be spelled either that way or "Seishirou", getting rid of the symbol and adding a "u".

Another example would be the last name "Hyōdō", with symbols above both of the "o"'s. Another way to spell it would be "Hyoudou", adding in two "U"'s.

Adding onto the last example that could also apply to the first, people can also skip the symbols but spell it the way it would be spelled if it still had the symbols, which would be "Hyodo", or "Seishiro".

Realistically, which of the ways is more proper for English? Obviously Spanish last names can have symbols in their names and we tend to use them. I know little about Japanese, and I'm not sure if this is Katakana or Kanji or whatever the fuck, but if I were to spell it, how should I do it?

Any tips for someone coming back to study Japanese?

I'm back and this time I'm gonna learn this shit for real.
I stopped studying japanese 3-4 years ago because of borderline women that would suck my soul and energy. Also college.
That time is over and I wanna get back on track. I had learned the kana, some grammar and a few kanji. Just bought the Japanese The Manga Way book, downloaded guides, downloaded duolingo etc etc.

What's the most recommended path to learn this language? I'd like a more systematic approach.

I recommend you read the guide because your answer could easily be given there IIRC

よつばと is probably your best bet with your current known number of vocab, you will always have a hard time reading something this is just something that would make the experience less painful

Anyway good luck, don't give up because you're slow at getting through it, you're not going to blaze through it no matter how many damn words you know, you just need to build that comfortableness and increasing speed will come with time

When I review forgotten cards and set days to some huge value like 9999 or something, and then go into the deck settings and limit reviews to 20 with random selection on, it seems to strongly favor more recent cards.
How can I make it choose the cards completely randomly with no bias towards anything? (other than only showing seen cards). I want to get rid of the memory bias of knowing that the card is a recent card.

Just a reminder that there's a little under two months to prepare for the test many of us aim to pass at its 5 levels.

It's plenty of time to pick up the pace and get through a bunch of material, so don't let yourself down!

I'm going to be going for my N2 after almost 3 years of studying, but I feel super confident and just need to make sure I fully know my grammar (my biggest weakness).

7 weeks is enough time to learn 500-1000 new words (decently comfortably) or to get through any of those grammar books you've almost finished!

Hi all! I know that this thread is generally aimed at self study, but I'm wondering if anyone had insight to earning an associate's degree online for Japanese. Due to where I live I don't have access to in person classes, but my work will pay for an online associate's degree.

I can't find anyone who has any insight on the curriculum and how it would be taught. For example if it was just reading or if there would be videos or podcasts and the like. I'd like to get a feel for what other people experienced.

Was it difficult in an online class setting?

How interactive was it?

What was your average book work a week?

If it helps, I'm currently looking at UMUC for the college. If anyone has recommendations on colleges as well I'd love to know.

Background: I graduated university in 2014 where I studied Japanese for 3.5 years. From class I got all the way through the Tobira textbook. After graduating, I continued to use WaniKani off and on to improve my kanji/reading ability, with the last 2 years being completely void of Japanese study.

Problem: When I studied in school I was too grade oriented so my foundation is weak, particularly in regards to kanji, listening, and syntax. When reviewing my old textbooks or choosing new material to learn from I find the beginner stuff is too easy/boring, but anything slightly above it feels out of reach. I understand this is similar to the intermediate level dilemma, but for me it's a bit different because I recognize so much from when I used to know it, but it's difficult to recall cause of my weak foundation. I know the response might be to suck it up and just re-review everything, (which I might have to do) but I'd prefer to do it in a more efficient manner especially because I'm not in school anymore. Note, my focus is to learn through reading and listening to podcasts/transcripts, books, and online articles.

Question: For those that have had large gaps in studying and are now advanced or close to it, how did you resume studying and how did you find the material that was right for you? What reading and listening materials did you use?

Example- If you were to go through Jpod101, without starting at their intro podcasts and working up, how would you find the right range to start listening to?

This is slightly nuanced so please feel free to ask for clarification. Thank you for reading and hopefully this can help others in a similar situation.

TL;DR- Took a long break from studying Japanese and I'm struggling to find where to start my studies again. Beginner is too easy but anything above has too much stuff I "recognize" (from past studies) but don't know.

Looking for help, perhaps quizzes and videos, to learn particles better!

Hi, so I'm learning roughly 30 vocab words, 20 kanji (200 and growing!), and roughly 4 grammar points a week. I'm even in Japan learning at a school! Isn't that great? But... alas, as much as my grammar, vocab, and Kanji usage is improving - what isn't improving is my usage of particles, which as you can imagine is very bad if I am to ever get anywhere with learning Japanese.

How does one know to use は over が, へ over に or perhaps で... Perhaps no particle at all? If I google search I'm swiftly greeted by very basic usage of each grammar point... which is fine to a degree but it doesn't exactly help me at the level I am now as I know their most basic usage but not their other potential usages -- (nearing being able to pass N5 if I could wrap my head around what particles to use so my sentences make sense). My books don't help much on these and my teachers insist on using an immersion technique of only replying in Japanese which is generally fine but not so much for this apparently (since I've yet to wrap my head around it almost a year into studying Japanese)

Topic は Time に Companion と Place で Object を Verb - The rough generalization of basic Japanese sentence structure. But when へ is used in place of に or when I am supposed to use で with no に. What about から?! or か when not used as a question mark. These are just rough examples of my confusion - sometimes I'm prompted with a question where I have to decide if there should even be a particle there and it looks like something could fit there but not at the same time.

I'm actually losing out on points on tests because I get confused on which particular particle I need to use sometimes. My books overwhelm me a bit and despite their examples I'm still horridly confused.

So, if someone could help me on information (videos and quizzes especially) on improving on how to use the correct particles (at a begginerish / N5 level), I would greatly appreciate that. Were you at one point having the same issue I am and found resources that worked for you - if so tell me how.

Yes, mind you I have of course done research of my own but I'm not exactly improving here with this which is why I felt the need to post here :).

Are there really people like this or these are only shitposts? I just don't understand how can somebody commit to learning a language, but fail to find any media to use the things they've learned. Especially for such a long time. Like, I'm studying at a pretty slow pace and probably still need years to be able to read comfortably, but I've been finding applications of my current knowledge since the second month of study. It feels like I'm seeing Japanese everywhere and I don't even watch anime that much nor read any vns.

I actually had a girl in my bed last year but she kept saying this stupid shit to me like she thought she was in a porno(sort of, maybe this is normal, she just sounded like she was trying to hard), I started feeling sick and disgusted so I just rolled over and played dead. Unfortunately it appears sex is not enough for me and so many stories have left me with desire exclusively for things thoroughly unrealistic. The more disillusioned I become with real relationships(a disillusionment inevitably becoming more oppressive as I age though I am still young) the more unrealistic and uncompromising my mentality comes. The thought of losing my virginity to someone not also a virgin becomes more unappealing the more it becomes the only imaginable scenario.
