Anyone can help me what this Kanji is?

>> No.19011930

Just a reminder that there's a little under two months to prepare for the test many of us aim to pass at its 5 levels.

It's plenty of time to pick up the pace and get through a bunch of material, so don't let yourself down!

I'm going to be going for my N2 after almost 3 years of studying, but I feel super confident and just need to make sure I fully know my grammar (my biggest weakness).

7 weeks is enough time to learn 500-1000 new words (decently comfortably) or to get through any of those grammar books you've almost finished!

Since the djtguide.neocities page has long since been actively maintained, how does everything think of an idea to move it to a wiki format where anons can add their own edits, etc.?

https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Starting_and_Running_a_Wiki_Website/Hosted_Wikis
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Hosting_services

The neocities hub is really nice but as a community project is has ultimately failed.

Everyone is at different stages and improve at different rates. I've seen lots of stories here about being put down from friends about the interest in learning and people who keep it to themselves for that reason. It would be even more discouraging to be put down by those who should be your peers.

So this will probably come off as a n0ob question, but I'm looking for a serious answer. I'm working through RTK right now handmaking flashcards and I always write them with their given stroke order. However sometimes when reviewing and rewriting I'll forget the stroke order of some and just write them in a different order to achieve their form. Every resource, from RTK to this sub constantly harps on correct stroke order and I'm just curious why it's so important. I don't go out of my way to write them in a different order but when I do and achieve the same final Kanji product I don't see why the order is as important as it's made out to be. So what are your reasons for why stroke order is important? I'm not challenging, just genuinely curious.

Decided to start my Japanese classes this semseter and boy did I learn a lot. We got to chapter 7 in the Genki book but I learned so much. How should I go about Learning Kanji?

I'm still fairly beginner in Japanese, and I'm wondering how I should go about learning Kanji. I was originally planning to wait until the end and save Kanji for last, but I'm afraid that if I do that I won't know exactly what words have what Kanji because of the multiple readings and all that. So is the more ideal option to just learn new words in their Kanji form and learn it like that?

>> No.19012190

from what ive always been told from teachers is that it's an art/ tradition type thing, and although we cant tell the difference most Japanese definitely can. basically said it makes you look like a dumb foreigner who doesn't care about the rules. i don't know if that's true but that's what I've been told. also i personally think that's the only real difference between シ and ツ on paper.

>> No.19012198

>>19012184
The hardest thing about learning kanji is that there is many layers to learn. What I mean is, learning a vocabulary is like 学生. Sure, you can learn the word means "student", but you also need to recognize the two kanji at play AND also learn how to read the word. That means to learn a new word, you are learning at least 3 things at once to really learn it. When you are learning so many things at once, your brain tends to skip certain details. One gap that happens a lot is that you'll likely can't tell the difference between 獲 and 穫 in different kanji contexts unless you really focusing on the radicals.

This is why I advocate to break down the learnings from 3+ things at once to focusing learning one thing at once. This is also why some people can learn 50 vocab a day instead of 10. Those people are not learning 3+ things at once per vocab at that pace. If you knew the meaning of a kanji, learning a vocab is just learning the readings and associating the individual kanji meanings to the vocab meaning. That's at least one less thing to have to learn. The real difference is that you are not starting from zero which makes a world of difference. For example, by knowing 学's meaning and on reading, it's a lot easier to learn 学生、学校、留学、学歴、化学, etc..

I'm not saying you can't learn kanji by vocab, it does work, but it's just incredibly hard if you really think hard how much load to do so. And generally you aren't enforcing the meanings of individual kanjis. It may take you months until you put two and two together what a particular kanji might mean from the vocabularies you had learned. People always argue that native speakers learn kanji from vocab not from individual kanji. That's true, but realize that native speakers are fluent by learning how to speak. For a 5 year old native that have never seen the word 学生, once they learned the sound of those weird symbols, they just have to associated what they already know. Essentially, they are not learning the meaning or the sound, they just have to match what already know to those kanjis which is relatively trivial. While we are trying to learn all the details of a word all at once which is insane.

I don't have really specific tips on learning readings but as long as you are chunking it, you'll do fine. I feel like most of the response here is to learn the readings from learning the vocab, I think that is really not optimal. At least from experience, it's not the best way to tackle this beast. Another way to think about it is that there are limited number of common kanjis, there are infinite number of vocab. I would feel overwhelmed to try to hope to learn those limited kanji by learning vocab. Those that have been through it knows that once you have kanji handled(at the very least, some broad meaning of the kanji), learning new vocab is so much easier. Again, it's just one less thing to learn at once.

I'm already half-way through with the first book of Genki so I should have plenty of time to make sure I learn all the content from this book.

So, I've lived in Japan for two years now.

Since week one, a small family that owns a fish shop has very kindly had me over every week for dinner and conversation. Every year, during our town's official matsuri they ask me to pull the float associated with their neighborhood and I happily accept. I've made friends with a few of the people who come home to this town for the matsuri, also.

A few months ago, I met another old couple. This couple much older, much, much richer and (by what it sounds like when I talk to other people) of incredibly high notoriety in the city. I've been to their home for dinner three times and also invited to a houji for the husband's father. They often try to ask me to join their team instead, but I personally would prefer to continue with the team I originally joined. (I also meet with that family far more often and know them much better). Also the next matsuri will the its 400th anniversary and the fish shop family takes the festival very seriously.

Is accepting this other family's request inevitable or is there a polite way that I can decline?

Suggestions, ways of phrasing, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

I mean that stuff is really bad - I actually have a psychological opinion saying that, so I don't know how such result can be considered within "norm".
I wouldn't be suprised if it's within "norm" only because people are often lowering their scores by selecting symbols they weren't sure about.

Absolutely not true and it's sad how proudly ignorant people are about this subject. Intelligence research is far more rigorous than the layperson gives it credit for. Look up Stuart Richie and Richard Haier's thoughts on IQ. Both are intelligence researchers and the latter owns the most prestigious journal that deals with intelligence research. Others might disagree and you all can make up your own minds, but I personally think learning Kanji is essential. They take time to learn at first, but repay you dividends later on when you accumulate vocabulary basically without thinking, passively, by reading or watching subtitled shows. Plus, any resource you'll use past the beginner stage will require kanji.. meaning if you don't learn them, you can't use these resources, and gimp yourself down the road. They're incredibly logical and like legos.

I'm barely in the hiragana learning stage so, sorry for the noob question. Now while I'm casually reading something I force myself to try to catch the onomatopoeias as a help for memory. In this page I have a problem. I get the がばあ (simbol?),

I check for がば GABA and:
(1) *grabs* *glomps*;
(2) *suddenly*;
(3) *jumps*;
(4) *rising*;
(5) *hug*

Which make sense but I didnt find anything searching がばあ as a whole, what I'm missing exactly?

basically you can't use "when" with "will"; "will" asserts a realis event, "when" implies an irrealis statement, to use them together they have to be referring to different times like "When you will be ready to go home soon" where "when" refers to a future present at which you may not be ready to go home but "will" refers to an even further future point where you will

I've been screwing around with JIS X 0213 and made myself a visualization of all the kanji included in it (sorted by KangXi radicals Unicode spec and, when null, the Adobe Japan Unicode spec, the first C variant), so I may just as well share it with you people. Maybe someone will find it useful.

https://a.uguu.se/FtFjp6mDQNaa_jisx0213.html
(be sure to save it if you want to keep it, uguu links disappear after a day)

So, the dark kanji are the JIS X 0208 Level 1 (the absolute must for people doing any serious reading), the red ones are the JIS X 0208 Level 2 (you should at least recognize them, they make reading edgy and chuuni material easier) and the light gray ones are the JIS X 0213 Level 3 (technical characters e.g. radical parts, compatibility variants, some advanced kanji for freaks). Pic related is which ones 装甲悪鬼村正 contains, if you were ever curious (notice no Level 3).

Thanks to them literally giving them away for free, I literally "own" over 300 volumes of manga on kindle, and I'd own them for real if I downloaded them all and stripped the DRM instead of doing a random sampling.

The overwhelming majority of them are below 300dpi. It correlates a little with age, but not much - newer stuff just increases the highest resolution you find, the normal resolution is still like 175~180dpi (1280 pixels tall for the Japanese B6 sized paper manga volumes are typically printed on).

300dpi is the absolute bare minimum that you should consider for a bitmap of manga to be seen as "normal quality", let alone high quality.

The only way for me to get high quality manga is to buy it and ship it overseas.

After 103 days of learning I have finished the RTK deck (the one that has words).
I was curious so I took a look at the N5 guide,
The 80 kanji were ok, but for some reason they also expect you to know words like 映画館 when the kanji that form them are not on the list?

RTK is good, but you should really do it in conjunction with regular vocabulary mining.

RTK can help make it easier to remember the trickier Kanji with many parts, or ones that look similar, but after a while you'll start to get a sense for it and won't need to rely on it so much. Sort of like how you can tell there's a very clear difference between

My grammar skills are still super weak so I really don't understand the rareru form, especially when it is partnered with te-iru. Is the te-iru only indicating an ongoing verb here? you can even do the calligraphy and hang it up in your bedroom and show your mom

I mean grade 1 kanji are basically pictographs so i wouldn't be too proud about that. Either way it's extremely ineffective, is there any reason why you want to learn using their methods other than muh genuine jap experience? cause i can't think of any advantages to it considering you'd learn some really common kanji last if you did it in the order they teach.
