18997576 No.18997576 [Reply] [Original]

This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.

Read the Guide linked below before asking how to learn Japanese:
http://djtguide.neocities.org/
Check the Cornucopia of Resources before asking where to download X or Y:

Let's remember to not be an elitist to fellow learners. Everyone is at different stages and improve at different rates. I've seen lots of stories hea here about being put down from friends about the interest in learning and people who keep it to themselves for that reason. It would be even more discouraging to be put down by those who should be your peers.

So I am just about to round 3 years of japanese "learning". For the sake of interest I thought to post the Anki stats for the Core 6K deck in that time. Though it has been a long time since I visited DJT I seem to remember these Anki posts always being made by people only a few weeks in, and so looking at a "finished" deck might be fun. As for why I continue? Well, it has just become a habit and I finish it in like 1 minute or so every day, as there only appear 5-10 cards. When actually learning the cards I had it set to 30 new ones every day.
Remember, you can't learn japanese if you can't put in some work!

How do you balance Japanese learning among your other hobbies? I've found that ever since I started learning Japanese, all of my other hobbies have gone completely to the way-side. I used to finish a book or two a month, watch a TV series every month or so, finish a video game or two, play guitar, etc. Now essentially all of that time gets eaten up by Japanese and I almost feel guilty if I'm "wasting" my time just idling on the couch for 15 minutes instead of doing something useful. I think one of my biggest issues is that I'll often spend like 4 hours after work "studying" Japanese, of which maybe two of those hours are actually head-down productive time, and the rest of it is spent looking around Japanese StackExchange threads and zoning out. >Historically, this was not the case. For most of its history, ain't was acceptable across many social and regional contexts. Throughout the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, ain't and its predecessors were part of normal usage for both educated and uneducated English speakers, and was found in the correspondence and fiction of, among others, Jonathan Swift, Lord Byron, Henry Fielding, and George Eliot.[26] For Victorian English novelists William Makepeace Thackeray and Anthony Trollope, the educated and upper classes in 19th century England could use ain't freely, but in familiar speech only.[27] Ain't continued to be used without restraint by many upper middle class speakers in southern England into the beginning of the 20th century.[28][29]

The slaves learned their English from the farmers who owned them. Of course they would speak the same, then once freed, the communities that had their economic cheat taken away from them would work to stigmatize the people they could no longer exploit.

I'm winning the semantic argument: you made a statement that was false unless you interject words that weren't there to begin with. That is to say, you're a backpedaling liar. Analyzing the fact that you made a statement that was both false and retarded requires semantics.

They weren't. It was a correctly written basic sentence.

As for you embarrassing second point, they didn't, because they're not speaking in ghetto talk. And you're allowed to use context, but you refuse to, which is why you've been going in circles, arguing semantics, because you're losing the argument.

"Hillary Clinton is the President" is also a correctly written basic sentence, but it's also a counterfactual and retarded statement.

>arguing semantics
I'm arguing semantics because you're a filthy backpedaling liar. In order to prove that someone is a liar, it is required to look at the words they used (oh no, SEMANTICS!) and whether they were truthful (which they were not). Which you are.

Whenever someone accuses the other side of "arguing semantics" it's because they want to ignore the meanings of the words they actually used in favor of something entirely invented.

I mostly read non-light novels. They're not much more difficult than LNs as a rule and I enjoy them a lot more. There are difficult books (Silence is above average and Botchan is harder because it's old) but most are straightforward and would be OK even as a first read. If you want something easy try コンビニ人間 in the library. If you're going to read Soseki http://sosekiproject.org/ is helpful for getting used to the archaic Japanese. Also, if your first few books happen to be boring, don't give up, keep searching for an author you love and you'll find one eventually.

Looking for a Duolingo club to practice (N5+ level). I’d like to use this Duolingo feature to include casual conversations and small talk to my learning routine, but I’ve already been in several clubs with no real results. I’m not an elitist or anything, but I don’t like it when people change syllables (like writing 「さいおうなら」 instead of さようなら because “that's how it sounds”) or use bad rōmaji and get pissed off if you try to correct them, or even they correct you with their version of things. I’d like to join a club where no rōmaji is used, even if it’s above my level (trying to get to N4 by December). I can look by myself for the vocabulary I don’t know or try my best (at my capabilities) to keep the conversation flowing. Any Club Code or other suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

What? But that's... that's not how it sounds. People do this?

I don't know what a "Duolingo club" is. Is it just a group of learners at a similar level? Is it themed discussion? You might be able to find more/better resources if you expand outside of duolingo.
