I hope I'm not doing things wrong, like with the form of the thread?
Recently, I've been re reading Legend of the Golden Witch, but with voices and the PS3 sprites instead. So far I'm pleased with the voices quality, Battler is very entertaining despite looking like a retard. Pretty much like Maria, in fact. Some scenes happened to play out with different tones in my mind though. It's fortunate that I already know how this episode and the whole novel play out, because otherwise I would have dropped the novel. If you want to truly appreciate the voice acting, you have to bear through the slowness of the text. And if you want to read at your own speed, then you'd have to skip and it would completely ruin the point of having those in the first place. Pretty much a deal killer for me, considering how boring Legend is at the beginning...
Anyway, this episode is pretty heavy in terms of foreshadowing, it's incredible. A plethora of little details are thrown here and there in unexpected ways, such as that moment when Maria is glad to be called associable when she learns that Kanon is often called that too. Why would she want to be like him, of all people? Or that moment when Genji only talks to Shannon in the corridor, when technically Kanon was still there talking with her just seconds ago. He couldn't have disappeared in such a short time... Or even when the narration describes Battler with words such as "big" and "strong" when Kanon was reminiscing how he helped him with the fertilizer bags. This may be my personal interpretation on this one I admit but it's very interesting

I don't know if it counts as foreshadowing but Eva straight up telling Battler that the culprit is most likely a servant is incredible too, you need to have some serious balls to draw suspicion on the true culprit(s?) in the first chapter of a mystery novel.

Setting aside the issue of sprites, how much would you say the addition of voice acting/CGs changes R07's vision of Higurashi and Umineko? Does it leave too little to the imagination, or do certain scenes benefit more from it?

I can't really be sure for now since I started very recently, but so far I'm not disappointed by the voices. But yeah in my opinion the updated backgrounds are not as good as the old ones despite looking more modern. I'm waiting for the first CGs to appear

Well Eva was trying to draw suspicion to Natsuhi for the majority of Legend. However, she has never liked Shannon because of the whole ShannonxGeorge thing, so her mentioning it to Battler is very in-character I think. Not denying it's risky to actively point to the culprit at the beginning, but there was so much suspicion being thrown around at this point that it kind of gets lost in the sea.

I personally had the culprit down to ShKanon/Rosa by the end of ch.4, but ch.5 was really misleading for me (despite the game saying the difficulty is "easy"), which pointed me towards Rosa by "eliminating" ShKanon by having the objective perspective (Erika) "see" Shannon and Kanon in the same room. Then ch.6 came around and slapped me in the face.

Would you like for WTC5 to get even heavier with its layers of meta, or is Umineko enough for that type of story? Trying to surpass Umineko in that could fall flat and get messy, but it could also make for a very interesting experience if he can pull it off.

Played the original first, but I like voices partially I guess.
Like Rosa/Maria/Jessica have pretty good voiceacting in my opinion but kinzo is just annoying. Beato and Battler are also pretty good. Guess it depends on what your first experience of the game was but I think I prefer the original without voices even though I like the alchemist version anyhow.

Meanwhile, I'm perfectly capable of reading the literal fanfiction that are the console arcs of Higurashi even if I'm forced to use the Alchemist sprites. They are not canon, so it's only fitting that they can't be played with the original sprites. Nothing jarring about it at all.

While the original sprite expressions are much better than the ps3 version, everything else about the ps3 version adds to the experience rather than subtracts from it.

I thought I should share this interesting documentary made about Umineko by an NHK TV program named "MAG・ネット" I came across while lurking around some Umineko Discord groups.

The most curious thing to me wasn't even to see how does 07th Expansion works in the background in the making of Umineko (they did show quite a few interesting details however), but just how big Umineko's attention was even outside the otaku circle.

There's this little section of the documentary where they've shown no one other than Hiroki Azuma in the flesh making a philosophy and literary focused lecture about Umineko.

For those unaware of just how big this person is, he is one of the most influential contemporary literary critics in Japan. He goes as far as being considered a philosopher in there, PhD in "Culture and Representation" from the Todai.

I guess I will indeed make my university thesis about Umineko after all. I was uncertain about how much anyone would take me seriously regardless of the genius content surrounding it, but this is the trigger for my complete certainty about it (way to go, Lambda, thanks)

I love the rooftop fight. If there is one scene that has marked me in Higurashi, with the vomiting traumatized Satoko in ep 3, that's the rooftop fight.

It is such a whiplash. This episode, and all the other before, were terrifying and paranoid. They were dark and foreboding. This episode was dark too, and seeing Rena becoming a crazed monster was hard. And yet at the apex of it all, when all hope is lost, you get a fight to the death between Rena and Ke1. They quip, they are enjoying themselves, they are fighting for what they believe is true, and it's so funny and endearing and epic I couldn't help but smile through.

Fuck it. Ryukishi is a genius.

While that doesn't surprise me, it does please me to see that its profundity has already been sublimated. You didn't necessarily need a professional writing a course on it to see that, but this knowledge can only bode well. I don't know him, but from the sorts of literature and philosophy he likes (a lot of postmodernism, continental, and good literature of the ilk) you can tell he'd be keen on Umineko. He mentions meta attributes here and there, which are characteristic of postmodernism, as I've mentioned before. This is why Borges reminds us of Umineko (that is to say, for a related set of reasons (in the abstract taxonomy) to what he discusses in his lectures).

As an aside, if you really wanna write a thesis on Umineko, definitely keep me up to date on that. We can even discuss it, if you like, insofar as you would discuss that with an outsider.

Japanese literature has some true marvels, and the country took extremely well to the golden age of detective novels. In fact, the Japanese literary scene is even known for it (plus a lot of Japanese identity themes, though that's always been huge since the WWII stuff).

And yeah, definitely keep to your idea of the thesis so you could write something as great as possible. If you post anything here then I'll definitely look at it and offer whatever you need for it. Integrating Umineko into academia seemed Quixotic, so I'll pounce on any opportunity for it.

And don't forget to read other works for maximal understanding of Umineko, Japanese or not! It's totally crucial to all artistry to visit and draw from the old masters wherever we can! I actually enjoy the VN quite a bit because the atmosphere is so fucking weird. The music tracks are extremely short and simple, but they feel really creepy. And some of the backgrounds look incredibly disturbing and surreal compared to anything in Subahibi. It has this weird old school charm mixed with some kind of awkward creepiness that I really enjoy. Also, Wakatsuki's design is pretty cute. It's a shame that there's no female Yuki, though.

I still think it's pretty amateurishly made and in a not so good way, but I like it. And I like the small references to it in Subahibi.

I really missed the alternate outfits in Umineko. Always go for the the original first, and the updated for a reread.

Umineko in particular got some amazing scenes ruined by over the top voice acting (the BAKWWAAYAROOOOOO at the end of EP 5 for example, you can't even call that scene a tearjerker in the PS3 version, it's just narm and cringe-worthy in a way).

The USO DA! scene got the same feel. In the original is absolutely horrifying, and from that point on, it's purely claustrophobic and panic inducing. In the console version, it just loses the impact, because you can hear that the USO DA isn't nearly as effective as the mute version is, probably also because of over-the-top acting.

In other hand, the All Star fantastic voice cast and the updated graphics make it for a gorgeous alternative experience too. It's not like they make it any inferior (some times they even improve some scenes). But they do ruin some specific key moments.

Choose wisely, knowing these details.

I personally tend to feel bad for awful bastards like him because it's obvious that deep down they feel empty and unhappy due to their own selfishness.
