I like games from then and still have lots of magazines from them, mostly gamepro and stuff, but I don't care for dating sims, advs, rpgs, and the like. I like the style of Japanese games then but don't get a lot of chance to experience it in the games I do like.

The most interesting thing from this outside of the interviews and what not are the charts. Style of games that were considered system sellers STG selling 100-150k copies. Simulation games such as Ambition of Gihren topping 400k not to mention stuff such as Virtual On

Do most people who play these retro games have the retro consoles and know Japanese? I wanted to play some of these games to practice Japanese but everything I found online is really hard to read. Like the actual hiragana/katakana/kanji is so pixely for a beginner it's difficult.

I never played any of these games back in the 90s in their original form, i've always just emulated them. I don't think the text really looks that pixelly, but I suppose it depends on what game you're looking at.

depending on platform the quality changes a bit and i guess and stuff can also get a bit squished together and be tough that way

Dou2 in this case has a nice big font on the console version
But we could probably find some game that uses too small a font
