/jp/, what are some games/VNs/anime/manga that feel like old-school japan? Mamoru Oshii's films, Yoko Taro's games, MGS's "weird but not out of place" aspects, Guts and Griffith's first encounter with Zodd, their meeting with the Godhand at the end of the Golden Age arc, Blue Gender's introduction of supernatural-ish elements towards the end, etc. The feeling of horror, wonder, melancholy, and mysticism resulting from the rules of the world being unknown, rewritten, changing, or being questioned. This might be better on /a/ or /v/, but they would probably get shitposted into hell over there.

The feel of early titles that were introduced to the U.S., while staying true to the original version. Akira, Ninja Scroll, Dragon Ball Z, Ghost in the Shell, Evangelion, Jin-Roh, games like Drakengard and Tenchu, and some of the darker and more serious eroge and hentai, meant for adults, that felt very taboo and strange, while staying erotic.

In a way. There were a lot of things like this in the 80s & 90s, but it's not exclusive to those times. Yoko Taro's games and Mamoru Oshii's films (GiTS '95/Innocence, PS2 Drakengard, Automata, Jin-Roh and Grave of the Fireflies to an extent) are really the only ones in recent memory that have fully captured this feeling. It's the sense of wonder, the uncomfortable curiosity, the horrific mysticism of things feeling out of touch or unexplainable by any means. In Automata, when you and 9S are heading to the final confrontation with Eve, the combination of the music, the behavior of the machines around him, and who or what Eve is being unexplainable, he and Adam rewrote the established rules of the world from the first time you meet them, and the knowledge that Pascal and his friends at the village are safe, brings about this feeling of melancholy, curiosity, and horror.

I'm also always seeking this feeling from the media I consume and have a really hard time articulating what I even mean when I ask for recommendations. You might want to give Koudelka (PS1) and its "sequel" Shadow Hearts (PS2) a try. Shadow Hearts has 2 more games--2 is equally good imo but gets some criticism for losing a lot of its "tone" and 3 is a complete departure but still okay if you enjoy the "history happened but also there are demons and shit" aspect of it. I'd play them all for monster design and item/bestiary blurbs alone.
