This is pretty usual old town Japan.
Not even dead town, just a town that's been around a long time. They hardly do up buildings, if a building stops being used it sits until someone buys the land and builds something new.

Yes, and the "en" can be 縁, which mean relationship or bond.
So "go-en" can be read as an honorific way of saying bond. Who is the bond between? You and the god you are making an offering to.

15 and 115 mean nothing, 50 can be taken as even more solemn or honorific, but pretty much the universal standard is 5.

I’ve heard capsule hotels use traditional Japanese materials such as pillows filled with beans. Not to diss japan but I’m probably too used to western style pillows to ever be able to sleep on those.

I agree if you're considering it purely from the practical aspect. I would imagine the features of something considered a "business hotel" would not be much larger in scope than what a capsule has.
I'm just interested in how nice you can make a little space like that although I suppose it's all about practicality and cost cutting for the owners of a capsule

This capsule cost $40 in Osaka and you had sauna included, TV, wi-fi, noise isolation was good as i didn't hear anyone while sleeping there and there was a lot of people. I don't remember about AC but temparature wasn't an issue.
