Some people in the latest Aniki thread wanted a more general 音MAD thread so I'm making this.
音MAD are a genre of videos made in Japan and other countries and normally posted in Nico Nico Douga where a source's audio and video are altered to go with a determined song. Think like YTPMV but with more emphasis in cool visuals. If you're here you're probably familiar with stuff like Gachimuchi, Cookie and Inmu but there's tons of more sources. I've been watching MAD videos since 2009 so if you have any questions I'll try to answer.

Something I noticed, it's that a lot of recent Nicovideo memes seem to be based on being as shitty and annoying as possible, but still having some degree of creativity. I think one of the reasons otomad has been less popular is because the singular "Nicovideo culture" no longer exists, there are a million content portals out there now and everybody just does their own thing now. The overarching site culture has been replaced by a bunch of smaller cultures like it has been everywhere else.

Browse niconico (change the region and language to Japanese, English niconico and jap niconico are completely different), use the tags, and watch MADs there if you really want to dive into MADs with text flying on the screen.

I find it more involving and intense with it than without it. It fun to see the reactions of people and some comments are funny in comedic centric videos. Also many people have done amazing things with the text itself, using text placement/modification or with ASCII art. The comments sort of become part of the video itself and becomes a more integrated experience.
