I found that the easiest way to memorize the kana was just to play pic related for a while and mine vocab simultaneously (kanji versions tho)

my brother and myself are looking into learning Japanese (speaking and understanding). We are aware that the most convenient way is to pay for a service (classroom environment) that we can use on our computers and phones on the go; Money really isn't an issue so we've decided that Babbel and Rosetta Stone are probably the two most likely services to choose between. I'd prefer to pay more and have good enunciation and understanding.

Anyone have any advice on which one is easier and more convenient to use to become semi-fluent?

No to everything in your post.

Classes and all other paid services are shit. There is only one way in which languages are learned: through massive consumption of media in that language. Learn kana, read Tae Kim's grammar guide, and then get down to reading and listening to native content as much as you can.

Be aware that this will take years of daily effort. There is no shortcut. If you are not prepared for that, then don't waste your time.

Rosetta stone is good for one thing and ONLY two things, and those are Listening and Vocab. Otherwise, it's completely worthless as grammar points are never really explained well or at all. Literally the first things that you'll see in it are 男の子は水を飲んでいます which while relatively simple doesn't explain a lot like ます'ing verbs, ている patterns, を direct-objecting your nouns, etc.

I guess you're meant to absorb all that throughout the course, but idk.

It's a lot easier to learn colloquial speech from listening. When you actually hear these shortened forms of word and phrases being said, it's so much easier to tell what they're supposed to be.

It also helps if you already did a lot of anime watching before you started learning.

What are some good ways to get familiar with the Japanese grammer 文法? When I see words while translating/listening or when I study the anki deck I feel like I forget them almost as soon as I stop looking at them.
So many of them sound similar to one another and some have a completely new meaning when a に or で is appended that I end up getting confused.

If you don't know how to say something, you don't know it yet, and trying to force yourself to say it isn't going to make you learn it, because you don't even know how it's said yet. All speaking practice is good for is turning passive knowledge into active knowledge. You cannot generate new passive knowledge by speaking, and you cannot acquire active knowledge if you do not already have corresponding passive knowledge for it.

You're not going to figure out how to say "Can we keep it? (this animal, as a pet)" in Japanese by translating it from English or trying to figure out how to express it. There's a specific set of phrases that are used for that, nothing outside that set is a valid replacement, and you're not going to figure out what's in that set by trying to say it without already knowing how it can be said.

I'm gradually increasing my new cards when I feel I am able to if that's what you're referring to, but even so I'm done with my anki work pretty quickly as I don't have that many reviews to do. To be honest I also don't feel like I have figured out how best to memorize kanji to be able to do a lot more new words per day. I feel as though even if I put in the corresponding increase in effort, my retention rate would go down anyways. I might give it a try but was just wondering if theres anything else I could be doing.

I did all of RTK like 8 years ago and got pretty comfortable with stroke order and recognizing kanji in parts. I've never mixed up any of the kanji containing 寺 but I keep fucking up obvious shit like 背 and 皆 even though they're totally different. The Core6k deck keeps fucking me up with all the different non-contextual meanings and readings of 上 and 下 and 起 lately (around 500 cards in). I think the only remedy is for me to start reading way more.

You just have to learn that it is in the context of Japanese. Different languages utilize the Latin alphabet in different ways. For instance, from the Scandi perspective, "j" actually sounds like "y", and from the Spanish perspective it sounds like "h".

Nihon-siki wasn't made with foreigners in mind; It was made with Japanese people in mind (as the name suggests). It is focused on regularity and faithfulness to the phonology of Japanese, not on being easy for an English-speaking foreigner who knows nothing about how Japanese sounds to read correctly.

If you can manage to read English, I'm sure you can learn to deal with the handful of non-phonetic spellings in the Nihon-siki system.

Not him, but people in these threads aren't all of one mind. Some people will tell you not to do RTK or Core6K at all, and the problem is, since every poster is anonymous, it's hard to know who's actually reached a good level and knows what they're talking about.

My advice to you would simply be not to overburden yourself. A lot of people get frustrated with their slow progress and start rushing through things, but before long they realize they've bitten more off than they can chew. The important thing is that whatever you do is sustainable, because you're going to be spending a long time doing it.

Sometimes it feels like Anki puts thing in a separate brain space and I need to 'unlock' it to feel like I truly remember it. There's no real reason you need to do Genki and Tae Kim. They both cover pretty much all the same material, so just stick with the one you prefer and then maybe reference the other when something confused you to see it explained in a different way.

The only reason you find it hard now is because you don't know any words, because you're doing it wrong.

After you have 1000+ words under your belt, it almost becomes a game figuring out new words before you learn their actual readings. Of course, you have to confirm the definition anyway using the dictionary, so you learn the readings one way or the next.

If you're expecting you're going to have to be speaking to people a lot, get listening as much as humanly possible now. And no subtitles. You won't have those in real life and they are a massive crutch (pretty much cheating).

Do that while you rush through Tae Kim, and then once you reach the end of it (hopefully you have finished kanji by this point too) get reading and mining words on top of your listening (focus on mining common words to get the best bang for your buck - don't mind a word just because you saw it one time; go for the ones you're seeing often).

You'll probably also want to try getting a bit of production in, but it'll take some time before you're ready for that. When you start being able to think a bit in Japanese, try chatting with some of the natives in >>>/int/日本語 and ask them to point out your errors.

This should put you in the best possible position for when you step off the plane, but don't go thinking you'll be anywhere near fluent after <3 months.

Yes it would, but there is an even faster way. Basically you write the character, but each character has a story to help you write it. Also characters are made up of simpler characters so it's easier to remember them as groups of things instead of individual strokes. Basically just check out RTK and some of the stories on koohi

It's fine to do this (actually it's generally good), as long as you don't rely on it too much as a crutch. Depending on what you're reading (like if you're just starting out and reading manga), it can be really easy to essentially just start looking at the few "big words" in a sentence, intuiting meaning based entirely on context (and the images in stuff like manga), and not actually comprehending the sentences. Its been three weeks since i have strated learning japanese, it all started with a simple DS game and after that i took it seriously. Although i find it tough I've had quite a lot of fun learning a new language.

I started learning japanese though the DS game called my japanese coach, ive so far learned a lot of things from that game, things like days of the week, months, colors and hiragana. But after a few days i quit using it and started using other means to study, through these means i have become well thorough with hiragana and about to start katanaka.

nobody would ever say that japanese phrase irl unless they were stumbling over their words or intentionally talking funny. 寝てはなりません on its own is already suspicious on its own, though it's within the realm of valid. tae kim did not know enough japanese to craft original example sentences when he made his grammar guide, but off he went.

a lot of the example sentences in tae kim's guide read like literal translations from korean to japanese, which usually works fine, but there are many instances of very uncommon collocations being passed off as normal, or words being used together in ways that mean something different than what he meant.

You can't give slangy examples in a beginner grammar guide. Of course his examples sound slightly unnatural. They're there to properly show grammatical function with as less interference as possible. A slangy or idiomatic example wouldn't accomplish this in the slightest, especially for a beginner and especially without having context tied to his examples.
