Doesn't kaiju culture and otaku culture overlap to some degre; especially when a recent film was directed by one of the most prominent figures of anime and said director includes references to one of the most popular anime ever? And then there's the Urobuchi connection.

I think the way Polygon animates things really turned a lot of people off, and the premise is pretty different than what the franchise has usually given us.
I liked it a lot, though. It's easy to fall into the trap of comparing it to other Godzillas, and then telling yourself it's not a real Godzilla film, but the concept is unique and interesting.

im a huge Goji fan my problem is anno made him too different the whole film it felt like i was seeing the new villain and at any moment the original was going to come march out the ocean and fight it.
i dont mind change but the giant mutating biomass just seemed too far a change. The film was ok but im also not a big anno fan either so that might be part of my problem.

it was different, for sure. But to me the real difference was the themes and tone, rather than the cosmetic details like Godzilla's design and powers.

In Shin Godzilla, the story throws some hints about being the creation of that vengeful scientist, or mutated by nuclear tests, but it doesn't dwell on it. It also doesn't really dwell on the human cost of Godzilla's rampage - hardly any shots of survivors, or focus on people running around at ground level. This is different from most Solo Godzilla movies, which attempt to echo the first film and carry a message about Godzilla being the consequences of humanity's sins, come to wake us all up to the horrors of nuclear advances.

but in Shin G, they don't emphasize this. Nobody "deserved" this, Godzilla just fucking happens. the vocal tracks when he invades Tokyo reinforce this - "Oh God, give us your protection. Let no blame lie at the innocents who have prayed." He's something straight out of hell, an unthinking demonic monster. As such, the focus is on the existential threat he poses to the nation and the world. But moreso than that, it's a satire of Japan's inefficient bureaucracy.

note how much of the film is devoted to people in upper and mid level governmental positions doing their jobs. Not running around and piloting tanks themselves, escaping from crumbling buildings, or disobeying orders to carry out some rogue scheme. They do through the Official Channels for everything, they follow procedure. And with the first Prime Minister, that procedure is ineffective and he gets nothing done. He's also too afraid to make the tough decisions.

When the MC creates his sub-committee, they still operate under the law, they just eliminated all the bullshit and actually get things done. they make deals and get approval for their crazy plan.

it's funny, because the film hits you over the head with the "do what you want" message, but it's clear that you shouldn't upend the tea table, as it were. the protagonists of the film (barely characters, they're just symbols) don't go rogue, they aren't outside of The System. But they make changes from within to cut the crap. They work together in a team effort, true Yamato Spirit, to save the day. It's not about being a hero, it's about being responsible.

and besides all that, the film is gorgeously shot, and I liked the way Godzilla kept evolving whenever they thought they had it contained. It adds a real tension when you realize that there IS no upper limit. Atomic breath, lasers from the spines, the tail is now a laser, and if they hadn't stopped him when he did? motherfucker was about to spawn humanoid life. it's crazy.

anyway I loved the film (as you can tell), and I think it's a strength of Godzilla as a franchise that it can contain such diverse entries. It would be boring if everything was the same.

It should be obvious that Shin's most defining features are nothing like the original Godzilla. Quoting the film, by that way.

I know that was copypasta and dunno why I'm responding by Shin Godzilla was also a less than subtle parody of the way the Japanese government handled the situation at the Fukushima nuclear plant. The post-tunnel collapse presser where they basically say 'everything is fine' and then boom giant tail is equivalent to when they said 'everything at the plant is fine' and then the plant said 'um no it's not we have no cooling in our reactors'. For that matter too the end of the film is a strong parallel: they kind of 'solved' the problem but it'll still take decades for a solution.

not copypasta, my guy. just sincere thoughts.

and yeah, the direct satire on the Fukushima situation is a big part of the film, too. It's why I think the film was more about the government than about Godzilla or NUCLEAR POWER or anything.

also, I think the "freeze Godzilla" ending would have worked even if it were the straightforward "nature's revenge" story. Because now there's a gigantic fucking godzilla statue in the middle of Tokyo, a constant reminder of how they fucked up, and a warning for the consequences of what will happen if they fuck up again.

so it's neat that the film works on multiple levels.

Shin Godzilla is on a completely different level when it comes to filmmaking and writing than most of the post-Showa Era Godzilla films. I even see how fans can fix their faces and hands to suggest that something like Godzilla vs Destoroyah, Godzilla x MechaGodzilla or Final Wars even remotely compares.
