My all-purpose mining deck (which has since become a disposal deck for vocab I don’t need to learn any time soon) has been at ~180 per day for a while now. I hope to lower it down to at most ~120 per day, but contradictorily I also need to kill the enormous backlog of unseen cards, which is why I custom-study a bunch of new cards on a whim so often, which is why cards per day is so high.

It depends on what is easier to learn for you, it's hard to give one specific answer that will always be the best for everyone. You may want to look into a individual kanji deck along with Core2k, so you get a more detailed grasp at each of the basic kanji that are used to build up the most basic words. It may slow you down a bit, but that's better than getting stuck forever and just giving up.

I'm having trouble understanding ここ, そこ, and あそこ when used with どこ.
ここはどこですか i get because it'd be similar to saying "where am i?" or "where are we?"
そこはどこですか would then be like asking where a place is that someone is talking about
but i have no idea about あそこはどこですか

maybe I've got そこ and あそこ mixed up here for meanings. or maybe none of them work since ここ/そこ are meant to be used in a more direct conversation based on speaker/listener position. halp?

>what other languages did you already know before learning japanese?
>do you think they helped you with japanese in some way or another?

As for me, it's Italian (native), French and obviously English (a little German too, but far from fluent yet).
Being the first non-European language I learn, I have to say I am being fascinated by the added "visual" dimension Japanese has thanks to its writing system, something I've never seen in any European language. Anyone else felt the same at first?

ここ works but I don't see a reason you would use そこ or あそこ like that. You'd have to have a specific place already in the context to use そこ, so in most cases you'd already know what it is
If there's a case when you need to confirm what そこ or あそこ are referring to then って is more natural than は

Maybe if someone brought up a location like:
A: ねえ、今度あそこ行かない?
B: 「あそこ」ってどこ?

Or nodded off in a vague direction:
A: 駅はどっち?
B: 駅ならそっちだな
A: そっちってどっちだよ

This situation of constantly having two different Japanese threads up at the same time is making it practically impossible to keep the numbers straight, and it's also severely complicating the matter of back-linking to the previous thread, so I decided to simplify things by treating OJT as a separate entity and omitting all OJT threads from the count.

I consider the #1905 number to be correct as is this is indeed the 1905th iteration of the "Daily Japanese Thread". As far as I'm concerned, the OJT guy is the one with the incorrect thread numbers: As there have only been 5 iterations of the "Otaku Japanese Thread" so far, his current one should be labelled #5, but even if you add the DJT thread count to the OJT thread count, the number of his current thread is still incorrect (it should've been #1909 in that case).

Look dude, if you're so "intelligent" then the basic vocabulary/kanji acquisition phase should be a breeze. You probably haven't even started yet so try doing 100 words (not KANJI but actual words which can include the same repeated Kanji) and then decide whether you think it's too hard.

20 words a day is easily retainable. Some can do more, but 20 is a safe place to start.

I must be. あそこはどこですか? is defined by lingodeer as "Where is that place over there?" But I can't think of a time I would ever say that. Hence i'm trying to wrap my head about it.

I would say "where am i?" (where is this?) or "where is that?" so ここ and そこ with どこ but those might not work for general statements and are meant to be used in reference to speaker/listener location. If that's the case, then あそこはどこですか would be what to use in the case of someone mentioning a place to you and you asking where it is, since neither of you are near it.

That's not true at all. When I had actually needed to translate to japanese I had skimmed through japanese particle explanations and got everything needed. It even works with my mother tongue, it's better to read meticulously explanations on points that you don't get than haphazardly consume information and hope that your brain will arrange for you.

Not him, but I feel like what you're saying here is untrue and the exact opposite of how you should go about doing things.

By "reading" a lot you may gain an intuitive sense for Japanese grammar, though at the same time may not even really understand it. This "hint" as you so bluntly put it is very crucial to understanding Japanese.

If you don't mind this crude example, going about learning to use the を and が particles just by memorizing phrases or sentences which happen to use them is doing you a disservice in the end. You might get a feel for it in the long run, but you will never really know why unless you actually study the grammar behind the particles.

In your own example/explanation, you simply state that the って """particle""" can be used in many cases, but I'm willing to bet you have absolutely no clue why that is or what て form is really all about. And it's obvious to anyone that even knows a bit of Japanese. What it all comes down to is that when you finally decide you want to formulate your own thoughts into Japanese, all you're really doing is creating frankensteins out of things you've previously heard or read, which may very well not be all that correct sounding, because let's face it, you have no fucking clue what you're doing.

Explanations like this are why no one seems to understand the difference between those two particles.
I know the original question was a troll post, but は and が really are completely different things.
Sadly, the way the japanese language works makes it possible to create sentences that differ only in those particles, yet translate to the same thing.
But that doesn't mean both particles are the same, it's just that the way japanese allows you to leave out a lot of redundant information makes those two sentences seem like they are the same.

It's fucking good, yo. I love it. It's not too long like 原子力発電所 or too short like 紫. That explanation doesn't make sense, but I just got a need to say to a bunch of anons that I. love. 四字熟語. It's sufficiently complex for me, like the kid bear's broth of Japanese kanji compounds.

the y axis is a measure of comprehension that grows linearly when far from zero, calculated based on coverage via e^(-ln(1-coverage))
coverage is a measure of how many instances of words in the text you know. that graph excludes particles and other strictly grammatical words.

I wanted to find the VN source of that image, and got pic related instead.

I did not realize there was such truth in Doraemon. It was the very first work I've ever read (in any language) and to this day it had a deep impression on me, and again in Japanese it seems to have gained new power.

Does this mean essentially "thinking that you'll easily gain something just because you want it is naive"? Am I in the right ballpark?

>> No.18760137

>>18760115
No because there's a time where you're spending more time looking up words than time spent actually reading, and then you get to a point where it gradually shifts to about the same amount of time for both, and finally you reach a point where you're reading more than you're looking up words. That point is around 3k, a lot more than around 2k and definitely more than around 1k.

I was genuinely very surprised when /a/ doesn't seem to have a nostalgia for Doraemon. Doesn't seem like Doraemon is popular as Western children's cartoons too. My Indian friend seems aware of it, though.

To be honest, I'm all for the threads moving to /int/. Ever since DJT moved to /jp/, the levels of autism have gone through the roof, and lately it's just getting worse and worse and worse (see the recent OJT fiasco for example). We used to get the odd shitstorm of autism on /a/ as well, but in basically every single thread here there's some huge argument about bullshit that nobody cares about, and so little in the way of actual meaningful discussion anymore.

Whenever I've checked the /int/ threads in the past, the atmosphere has always been far more constructive than the one here. Maybe the fact that the /int/ threads weren't on such an elitist board did a lot to tone down the general autism and encourage more constructive posting. The only thing they were really lacking in was activity thanks to the threads being split in two, and that's the reason why I ended up primarily staying over here all this time despite the threads being worse.

>Actually learning Japanese is a very niche interest.
Yeah, very. That's why the internet is full to bursting with sites about learning Japanese, expat vloggers/bloggers living in Japan, etcetera. That's why Japanese is a more commonly studied language at US universities than Chinese and even certain European languages like Italian.

Japanese is not some obscure, niche topic.

>Conceivably, Japanese is in turn not just a language, but indeed, the Japanese language, so it goes to /jp/ just because it's Japanese.
Okay, so let's follow that logic and post all threads about Japanese video games from now on on /jp/ instead of /v/ or /vg/. They're not niche at all, but who cares, they're Japanese, right? While we're at it, lets bring all anime and manga threads from /a/ here too.

Do I...just start? Maybe I should listen to audiobooks? The free ones I can find easily are flat readings of old Japanese stories, like Soseki's "kokoro". Anime episodes with japanese subtitles? Japanese songs with the lyrics on the screen?

I've done a Core2k and can grasp most of the main concept in children's manga, ie. absolute beginner.

In a fit of boredom, I decided to sort/count out my physical flash cards. Turns out in 1 month I've managed to learn 141 verbs, not counting ones I "accidentally" know by extension from other words which are the noun/other form of a verb (光=光る for example) or counting the fucking infinite +する verbs. After listening to a bunch of news, I really want to unironically +する "大統領" and talk about the Trump's "presidenting" ability in true American style.

On that note, how common is it to +する words which aren't traditionally candidates for it? We do it all the time saying things like "I adulted today" in English and I'm hoping Japanese is as flexible with its slang.

all the East Asian countries are very group-oriented. It's rare, for example, to see people eating alone outside.

> I supposed I am just irrationally afraid of going to the country and being shunned.
East Asians have disdain for foreigners IF they think you're not adding value to their society. For example, English teachers are looked down upon since the only marketable skill they supposedly have is teaching their own language.

So it would be a small disaster if you just hop on a plane and go to Korea or Japan without a plan, especially if you suffer from AvPD. If you ever want to go to Korea and hang out with the natives, I would suggest securing a spot in an organization before arriving. (Get a job at a large company or get a teaching position at a university.)

> I really like kpop and just the way the language is on the ears. It makes me genuinely happy to think of being fluent.

Here's an idea, every time you post in this thread, rep 100 cards from your decks. I guarantee you'll get much better that much quicker.

In fact, have a fun studying game.
