orin: cute cheerful neko of good theme
clownpiece: amazing USA USA USA design and notoriously hard

monowho of futa: forgettable, but this is excusable since she's a TD character
HSiFS dancers: also forgettable, but at least theyre new 2hu so they have a modicum of popularity for now. paired 2hus never work out! only prismriver quartet is an exception.

This is how you can tell someone only look at western fanbase.

Futo is mildly popular and TD cast is on the rise of popularity.
On the other hand, Clownpiece is also only mildly popular at best in nippon land and among fanartists, only western fanbase that won't stop about "murica fuck yeah".
Prismrivers are also forgettable as shit. The jap made a lot of art about them because there were not as much characters back then as of now but as new characters get introduced, they keep falling towards the abyss of obscurity until they hit the bottom.

At least I try to base them on popularity polls and doujin/fanarts, the things that should count. Miko (39) already surpassed Byakuren (41) in polls and Futo (36) are above both of them. I say above 40 is impressive number since it's already above majority of 2hus.
Meanwhile Clown is 42, Orin is 51, Lyrica is 108, Merlin is 106 and Lunasa is 80. The Prismrivers are so bad I almost feel bad about them.

Yes, unfortunately. She serves an extremely important role for her Temple but Byakuren is the one people actually focus on as its leader, and Ichirin is playable in the fighters.

Sakuya, Youmu, Reisen, and Sanae have all been playable in mainline games. Orin is remembered for being notoriously hard and Cheireden is a popular faction. Seija is memorable and has her own spinoff games. Futo is popular and goofy and playable in the fighters. Clownpiece is also notoriously hard, her design so wild she's instantly memorable, and she stars in her own manga. The Dancers aren't very remarkable but they can leech off of Okina very easily.

The only thing people really remember Shou for is her curved lasers. Which is too bad, she's kind of cool. But she's kind of behind the 8ball since ZUN has made it so she can't really leave the Temple easily and go have adventures and solve incidents.

I think Shou along with Orin suffers from lack of exposure, but Orin at least is tied with a group of popular characters such as Okuu and the Komeijis. Meanwhile, Myouren temple crew has always been bottom-tier.

Let's see
Sakuya, Youmu, Reisen and Sanae has been playable characters throughout the games.
Futo is playable in the floaty fightans and her dorky and ye olde speech is appealing.
Seija got her own game, on top of being the first active and dangerous troublemaker in Gensokyo.
Clownpiece become prominent character in fairies manga and American fairy is unique.
Orin, despite barely appears, is part of popular Chireiden crew and she did appear several times in bunbunmaru articles, anyway.

Shou on the other hand, almost never appeared at all after her introduction, not even as focus or supporting character in an article or a chapter of manga and only has been a cameo at best, though I hope I missed something.
No one seems to catch her personality, too. People make her clumsy, incompetent and always being pushed around just because she lost the pagoda. No one touched that one aspect of her which is despite being reserved and dignified, she has a bit of anger issues inside. That's because ZUN doesn't seems to have intention to expand her character, not even a bit like he did with Orin.

Her way too conservative masculine design doesn't help, either. You can say Shou is both the least appealing and interesting among the Stage 5, and arguably the entire cast, in the eyes of most fans.

Her design is really neat too. It's honestly too bad that she hasn't really been expanded upon in any official work.

I want to like Shou, and I can find reasons to like pretty much every single Touhou character, but she has so little info and her danmaku is frustrating that it hurts her image. For an example, Junko also has weird danmaku, but Junko can be much more popular because of her relationship to Hecatia, Clownpiece, and even Reisen. But other than being Bishamonten's avatar and having Nazrin as her close disciple, there's very little going on with Shou. I'd like to learn more about her, but with Byakuren and Ichirin doing things in the fighers it seems unlikely Shou will get to shine.
