An update for the manga link site on the djt homepage, after not having touched it half a year.
The following changes:
* a drop-down menu with direct links to specific magazine headings.
* an alert.shop-bell link for all series which has one. This site is excellent for automated release reminders for new manga volumes, etc. This is what is now being used to keep track of new volumes for the Ongoing page series. This is the bell icon.
* updated volume information and an indicator of whether or not the series has concluded. Example: 最新刊巻：48完
* All listed series now have their own linked page with a dozen pages of the first volume to serve as a preview for deciding whether or not to download the first or any volumes to read more. This is the 立ち読み link.
* aside from the main page, there are now an extra two pages specifically for ongoing series and for concluded series.
* the concluded series page also has an option to view by the publication date of the final volume, recent to oldest.
* there is a link to a changelog which is an embedded google spreadsheet I'll be using to keep track of things and so someone can check at any given point and view if anything has been uploaded or changed since they last visited the page.

A big thanks to the anon who went and uploaded a bunch of stuff the other day. Everything you shared has been added and recorded in the changelog.
If anyone else has a series they love or are reading that is not in the cor/manga page and think other anons would enjoy it, if you have the bandwidth and data feel free to upload and share it as the aforementioned anon has. All I need is the manga series name, mangaka name and a link to the series uploaded preferably in single volume archives and with a file share host which is relatively permanent like mega, mediafire, etc. I'll get the rest of the information and make an entry for it with the others.

For what it's worth you'd have to work at a truly glacial pace to spend 3 more years without being able to consume native material. You could drop your studying to an hour per day and still make it faster than that. True fluency is very time consuming for sure, but you can understand most things well enough to start enjoying them long before that point.

I have the rikaichamp extension for Firefox. Earlier it was only detecting a single kanji at a time, ex. instead of detecting 税込 it would just pick up 税 and 込 individually. Since it seems you already speak two languages quite fluently picking up a third (?) will be easier than say for someone like me who never bothered with Spanish or French as a second language. I only mention this because I often hear learning gets easier with every new language. It has to do with how you wire your brain for language learning or something.

That said, the biggest things that foreigners struggle with are the writing system and the grammar in general, and I don't think it'd be all that different for a Spanish native. However, in some ways I'd imagine it'd be slightly easier to get behind some of the concepts of the Japanese language such as the use of polite Japanese, since you have a similar concept in Spanish, the word order, and the dropping of pronouns. I guess you could also make a point about the very similar vowel sounds in both languages.

Well that's a call everyone has to make for themselves obviously. Reading translations is always going to be reading translations though, and not everyone wants to settle on that.

That said I don't agree that it's "a complete waste" to learn something just for the sake of learning it either, even if it doesn't apply to the original anon. A lot of people have hobbies and interests which they spend a lot of time on despite them providing no tangible benefit at all, they engage in them purely out of personal satisfaction. Learning a language is no different in that regard, maybe you've just always really found it fascinating and the idea of understanding it appeals to you.

Playing through 黄金の太陽 with no reference to the English localization, since I never played it. I have some questions though, because as a Japanese newbie I need to know:

1: Is 発動する pretty typical for people who "cast" or "invoke" magic/spells/etc? Is there a specific reason that word was selected over something simple like 使う?
2: This game has a lot of different ways to talk about what you found/gained/acquired just in the battle text alone. From other RPGs I know it's typical to see 上がる when stats rise, 貰う when one gains experience points, and the like, but 手に入れた (was able to obtain?) seems strange when other simpler options exist. I've also seen 獲得 used in noun form (３９ポイントのけいけんちをかくとく) which could totally be normal, but IDK.
3: Is there a hard-fast rule for the reading on 山? I can't decide whether アルファ山 should be read さん or やま, though it is technically also a volcano, but is only addressed as such in certain situations.

I'm just scratching the surface on some of the stuff in this game. After playing through ポケットモンスター　赤緑 I'm seeing just how "dumbed down" the vocabulary is in Pokemon in comparison. Either that or 黄金の太陽 has a lot of gratuitous word choice throughout.

Anyone who's familiar with the English localization, please let me know if the game/battle text seems odd compared to normal English speech.

Anyone who is fluent/nearly fluent in Japanese, please tell me if this game's vocabulary is what is typically expected in these situations.

I think the trouble is that when I first looked it up, I just drew the kanji out and selected it rather than typing in what it is read as, and it must have defaulted to the "てにはいる” reading.

In fact, I've just gone back and entered it precisely the way I did the first time to see what the search result yielded... The posted screencap is what happened, so I must have just stumbled into the other reading/meaning and rolled with it.

Yeah, the problem with japanese for a westerner is that it's really a chore... When you learn another western language you pretty quickly start catching on and understanding basic stuff, with japanese you first need to put a lot of work before you can actually use that knowledge for anything, and even then all you can understand are some basic learning texts aimed at westerners that have nothing to do with real life usage and essentially don't give you any useful language exposition.

It's just a chore, so you need a good reason to do it, or you'll start skipping it and give up eventually.

The grammar is dead simple for "basic" things. It gets worse later on though.

However, you'll wanna go back over every single Kanji you know and make individual flashcards for the different tones, drill the shit out of them until they become second nature, and listen to LOTS of spoken Mandarin to get used to that.

The readings are straightforward so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Don't let the tones stuff scare you either, it makes way more sense when you're actually doing it.

Original ひだり-みぎ confused anon here, I think it's also because in the two languages I've used, the "west when one is facing north" direction uses four letters so I guess my mind's sees みぎ having 'four letters',and thus the 'left'.

The kanji themselves are easy, since 左 has that エ thing, and that's the 'e' katakana so I just go 'left'. It's the reading that keeps on confusing me. So I often understood 左側 read it as みぎがわ.

I just read eroge and do 40 new cards a day. I understand that しまう means unintended action, or the completion of an action. However, recently I came across this usage in the comment section on a website:

While I understand this sentence perfectly, one part of it puzzles me greatly. So far, I've only seen ています, or てます where the い is omitted. Nonetheless, I've never see a case where ます is omitted. Here's how I'd parse this sentence:

遅い=>遅く
なる=>なって
しまう=>しまい（ます）
+すみません

After some homework done, I believe てしまい/しまって+すみません/ごめんなさい/etc. is a common usage. However, I still can't figure out how ます is missing here. Could it be that some other entirely different grammar is at play here? Please enlighten me. Thank you. (*Am I allowed to say thank you here?)

「しまい」 is called the conjugation form 連用形 of the helping verb (補助動詞) しまう. ます is actually just an auxiliary verb (助動詞), and its function is purely politeness/formality. It's not a part of, nor is it necessary for the verb しまう, or any other verb. There's a grammar principle in Japanese called 中止法, which means that you can put an inflectable (adjectives and verbs) word in its conjugation form 連用形 (like 厚い＝暑く、聞く＝聞き、静かなだ＝静かで), and it creates a little pause in the sentence, and continues thereafter.

It's the same concept as lessons, really. It's a very over-simplified introduction that might help you with some very basic concepts.

I saw someone wasting their time with it once, it's so fucking picky about how you respond. You can type something technically correct but leave off a pointless connector, and it marks you wrong. It's also mostly multiple-choice, which gives you a false sense of knowledge when you're picking between 3 obviously incorrect answers and one you aren't sure about.

I'm of the opinion that these kinds of programs probably hurt more than they help, by showing an utterly misguided approach of translating text for the sake of passing questions, rather than actually developing any real understanding. But that isn't really possible without a dedicated teacher or self-discipline, neither of which appeal to the target market.

Last time I tried yomi it was garbage (extremely slow, wouldn't register some text, etc.), and looking at reviews it still seems like it's bad. champ is much better, but only one integrated dictionary and no Anki integration and sometimes randomly needs to be re-enabled to start registering words again.

As you can see I didn't do much anki this month because I wanted to finish the VN I was reading and also had some business to take care of, and frankly just didn't want to do anki for a while. Doesn't work the same, it will only show what is actually in use by your system, not what fonts the site tries to use. For example, my PC actually uses EPSON Kyokasho for that element on hover because that's what my PC defaults to for serif JP text, and so that is what Firefox displays there, but it's probably a safe bet the guy asking the question isn't having that font be used, and is rather using one of the fonts actually listed in the stylesheet manually.

I'm just using Anki and some beginner level manga. I've memorized a few radicals and radical combinations in the process. Learning words like 同人誌 takes me a little over 10 second, "box-line-square person say-earth-heart".

question marks don't have to mark questions, they're often used to mark an upward tone shift like you might use when trying to drive a point home & make sure the listener is getting it
Like:

or you see them in flustered manga dialogue like

same reason it's on the ね basically
