Tomoe Gozen is a character from the Tales of the Heike, though it is unclear whether such a woman ever really existed or not. She is one of the few examples of a true female warrior samurai in all of Japanese history. Famed for her skill in combat, she is notable for having almost a page and a half in the climactic portion of that book, a very famous piece of ancient Japanese literature, devoted solely to how apparently totally awesome she was. According to the Tales of the Heike, her master ordered her to leave him to commit suicide. Shamed by not being able to commit suicide with her master, she charged into a group of approaching enemies, slammed the leader's head against her saddle, decapitated him, and rode off into the proverbial sunset.
