it's basically just a demo of how sentence structure works along with a crash course of hira and kata.
Later on you get a vocabulary builder and audio testing, but it's still in it's beta.

What I'd like is explaination of things.

Hell, I live in Indonesia, and I'm embarrassed saying I learn Japanese. They know my first exposure to any reading material is Doraemon, they bought it for me! But still, it's very embarrassing somehow. Whenever they asked me what I've been doing, instead of saying 'studied Japanese', I just said 'nothing' or 'watched television'.

Yo can someone help/explain this for me?
I was glancing through a pdf of Heisig's Remembering The Kanji before i buy it, and I'm just now seeing that it doesn't have any pronunciation of any of the kanji listed with the other info.
Why would that be? Why would I want to JUST learn the writing and not any possible pronunciation? Reading is important, but I would like to speak as well obviously.
It doesn't seem very productive if I'm gonna have to look up the pronunciation some other time anyway.
Sorry if the reason is obvious. I'm just starting out.

The vast majority of kanji have a minimum of 2 readings. Some have many more. In the first place, there is no sure-fire way to even know whether a word will use the onyomi or kunyomi reading of a kanji, let alone WHICH of its several onyomi or kunyomi it might use. There's also the problem of compounds like 学校 where the kanji reading gets broken to create a glottal stop, compounds like 木箱 where the reading is changed from unvoiced to voiced, and last but not least compounds like 今日 which don't use the readings at all. All of this makes learning readings outside the context of words 100% pointless (nevermind that it's extremely difficult to memorise a reading in the long term without something concrete, like a word, to associate it with in your brain).

also important to note that learning kanji outside of words is pointless but learning words outside of sentences is pointless and then better yet learning sentences outside of passages is pointless and learning passages outside of chapters is pointless and learning chapters outside of the whole story is the most pointless of them all

This is know as ateji, by the way.

It refers to two possible phenomena: 1) a kanji being used only for its meaning with no regard for its reading (e.g. 今日) or 2) a kanji being used only for its reading with no regard for its meaning (e.g. 馬鹿).

If you're ever wondering "why the fuck is this word written with the kanji for X?", then you're probably dealing with ateji.

Hello! I'm at a rather advanced level in Japanese. I haven't been mistaken for a native yet over the phone, and I'm not saying that my Japanese is perfect, but I can communicate with Japanese on virtually all topics without having to pull out a dictionary. I want to learn more about the nuances of the language, such as why in some sentences は is used instead of が(I know this is basic but most Japanese usually can't explain why they used one article over another so it leaves me confused most of the time). Is there a textbook or resource I can check out something with an explanation of this kind of stuff? I want to have a deeper understanding of how to naturally use the articles/prepositions/certain sentence structures.

The default config is a bit liberal for my taste. I recommend you (click the asterisk, and then...) at least disable the green for 1st party and set "all", "cookie" and "frame" to red. I just received my JLPT N4 results, failed by 2 points. I am not so upset about the test specifically, but it has confirmed some things I have been thinking for a while.

I am 24 and living in Chicago, my dream has been to move to Japan since I was a about 11 years old. About 6 years ago I started seriously learning Japanese, took my first college class, even though I had already learned Hiragana and Katakana from a young age. I sailed through 2 years in college without doing much HW because it was all just so easy. I have a great memory for nouns. After getting out of school I realized that I had to start to learn how to study so I decided to start to study for the JLPT because it would be a goal every year that I could see my progress. I failed my first year N5, by 30 some points. I thought I was ready but I relied too much on class information and just didn't study enough. then I kinda got in a rut and although I studied some, I really didn't commit to Japanese for a while. I probably tried to do at least 15 minutes a day but I wasn't really working hard at it at all.

Flash forward a couple years and I had started to study again, passed the N5 and was feeling good about life. 2011 was me hitting my stride. I had finally learned how to study. I did Rosetta Stone, got the Japanese TV channel and watched as much as I could, downloaded dramas, got through the entire Basic Japanese Grammar book, tried to read children's books, got a lang-8 account and started writing journals at least once a week, started Anki, read Common Japanese Collocations, got the Tobira book and started it, picked up some manga, got a Japanese exchange student, started speaking only Japanese with my husband in public. I was pretty much AJATT. I am not going to say I did great at all these things, but I definitely tried. I think I tried everything because a lot of things didn't work too well for me. So I wasn't the best student, but I was doing Japanese at LEAST an hour a day.

So October 2011 rolls around and I decide I need to start studying for the JLPT N4. I did nothing but study for the JLPT so long, my brain actually hurt every day. I did practice tests, worked on grammar, bought a couple of listening books and studied specifically for that test for 2 straight months.

I just received my results, I failed. I only failed by 2 points, but it made me realize that I actually guessed on almost every question on the test. I could not understand the listening at all!

So here I am, I have put 6 years or more of my life into this language, I have worked my ass off, I even have definite plans to move to Japan April 2013 to join a language school with my husband for a year. We already have 1/3 of the money saved up. And I feel like maybe I am just too stupid to learn this language. I have tried so hard and I just keep failing. We just made friends with a Japanese couple and I can't understand anything they say, I am defaulting to my husband just to be able to converse with them. Plus its super hard to watch him pick up the language with ease and pass all the tests with flying colors.

So I guess I need some help. I am ready to just give up the language completely, but I have no idea what that will do to my life and my relationships (I have already told my whole family I am moving to Japan) Should I just give up? Is there anyway I could pull myself back up and continue with it when I have failed so may times before? I have poured so much blood sweat and tears into this language!! I am sorry for the long post but I really need some help! (Please don't respond with a がんばれ！or "you can do it!" that's really not what I need right now...

It's a shit state of affairs for personal freedom and privacy in the modern day, but you shouldn't become pessimistic and defeatist. If people stop caring about privacy and just accept the government and corporations unjustly trampling on their rights, then nothing will ever change.

I think part of the reason things are so bad right now is because the government is full of old farts who barely even know how to turn their computer on, let alone have any idea about security and other technical issues. You have fucking morons in the UK government for instance who want to make it MANDATORY for backdoors to be put into software so the government can spy on you, completely ignoring the fact that foreign governments could wreak havoc on the nation's infrastructure if these backdoors were discovered, and also ignoring the fact that this leaves millions upon millions of people vulnerable to non-state hackers who want to steal their financial information and so on.

My Girlfriend also can't learn japanese to save her ass. She is much more passionate about Japan than me, so I think motivation is not the problem. I just passed the JLPT N2 (learning Japanese since 2005, but I didn't prepare for the JLPT at all), while she also can't pass the N4, even though her vocabulary should easily exceed the N4 level.

I think this is more of a "mind problem" rather than "I just can't learn it". When I hit a wall I try to solve the problem. "Why does this work this way?" "Why don't I get it while other people do?". I will read different explanations, and examples. She doesn't.

I think this really breaks down to reflective thinking, rather than language aptitude. Different people learn different things more easily, that's true, but that isn't all there is. Think about where your problems are, try different solutions to this problem, try to find out why you don't get a concept. Take one problem at a time. Make small steps. Think about what your own style of learning is and always has been. Don't only use advise on learning styles you find on the internet. I could NEVER do the AJATT approach. Just thinking about being only surrounded by Japanese all the time makes me tired and nauseous. If you don't think "might be fun trying this", it probably won't be.

Many people take word lists and just cram them. I can't do that for long. It's boring. Instead when browsing the internet and writing comments on reddit I would think about how I would write it in Japanese. I would always find my own obstacles this way instead of just learning what a book/teacher tells me to do. "How do I form a passive sentence again?" Look it up, make a note, try forming sentences. I will make my own word list with words I didn't know. I own some "kanzen master" books for JLPT preparation, because people recommended those, and they looked ok to me. GOD, are those books boring! No wonder everyone says the JLPT is difficult, these books are no fun at all to work with!

For example she just doesn't understand particles. In the beginning I was the same. Then I looked for explanations. Explanations like "direct object marker" just didn't do it for me. The linguistic explanations "accusative case" etc. eventually did. You see, me and my Girlfriend are German, German still has a accusative case (well English does, too, but you can only see it in personal pronouns ("did you see HIM?" rather than "did you see he?")), so I brushed up my German grammar knowledge.

I don't believe in "I can't learn this language". Others can, so you can, too!

I figured I'd comment on this, since I'm a couple years older than you and am probably at around the same level of Japanese as you.

Reading your post, it's hard to tell exactly how much you studied and learned. I've felt the same way you have many times, but when I sit back and think about it, I realize that I haven't studied as much as I thought. For instance, I took 4 semesters of Japanese in college, made A's in every class, my professors loved me, and I felt like I was some sort of language learning pro. In reality, most language classes are only good at giving you a starting point. They go too slow to learn a language in any decent amount of time.

About a year and a half ago, after 2 years of not studying Japanese at all, I finally mustered up the motivation to start studying again. I made my goal for that year to learn all of the joyo kanji. A year later, after just doing about 10 kanji a day, many times less, I know around 2200 kanji. If I learned the kanji at the pace we did in my Japanese classes, then I would probably know maybe 300-400 at this point.

Regardless, my advice is to set goals for yourself. Figure out your weaknesses, think about how to address them, and then set goals to accomplish that. For example, if the reason you didn't do well on the N4 was a lack of vocabulary knowledge, then set a goal for yourself to learn 20 new words a day. If it was grammar, then try and learn a new piece of grammar or two every day. On a small time frame, it will feel like you're barely learning anything, but if you view it in the scale of months or a year, you'll see that you can learn a lot. 20 new words a day for a month is about 600 new words a month, and 7200 new words a year. If you learned 7200 new words, you'd be getting close to N2 level when it comes to vocabulary.

You say your goal is to be in Japan by April 2013. That's a little more than a year from now. If you set goals for yourself and work a little each day, then you can learn a lot in that time frame. Forget about things like, "I studied Japanese for 6 years," or "I worked my ass off studying for the N4." Think about it in terms of actual language learned. How many new words did you learn over those 6 years? How many kanji? How much grammar? When I think of my own ability in those terms, I realize that saying, "I've been learning Japanese for 6 years" means very little.

And don't underestimate Anki or other SRS software. It's a life-saver.

The reason classes are bad is because the only way to actually learn anything to an intuitive level is through lots of reading and listening, and a teacher can hardly just have a class where they say "Okay everyone, grab a book you want to read and give it a go. There's also that classes play better to people's psychology. It's hard to appreciate exactly how much you've learned from one day to the next via reading and listening, but in classes there are more clear markers of 'progress' (only problem is that none of that 'progress' is actually useful in practical terms).

Some Kanji are written differently in Japan (Japanese simplification), Big China (Commie simplification) and Small China (Traditional characters).
Plus, on'yomi is not "Chinese reading". It's Chinese reading at the time it was adopted by the Japanese, which is very fucking long ago, butchered to fit into the laughably poor Japanese phonetic system and changed over centuries as the language itself was changing.

Not entirely true.

ふ can vary in sound from word to word (sometimes close to f, sometimes close to h, sometimes somewhere in between)
same goes for ら、り、る、れ、ろ, which vary between something close to d, something close to l, and something in between
then you have ん+[vowel], e.g. んい, which is not pronounced に as you might expect, and instead the two sounds are often separated by a nasally sort of "y" (though can also be dealt with in other ways)
there's also pitch accent which the writing system doesn't account for, and maybe other things that aren't coming to mind right now

Especially if it's got dense lyrics and you go out of your way to pay attention to them, you're going to get something out of it. It's also mostly a different kind of writing than novels and the like, so you're learning something you're probably not going to be able to get from anything else.

I've been studying Japanese for about 2 years now and thought of taking the JLPT. Finished Genki 1 and 2 and the remaining N5 grammar (making my way through N4 grammar right now). From what I've been testing myself, I can definitely pass N5 without a doubt.

Not sure about N4 though. I have most, if not all kanji down and, as mentioned previously, am halfway done with the grammar. Not entirely confident in my listening skills though. I realise it's very early to talk about the JLPT and until December I should be able to master the remaining grammar, but I'm not sure if I should risk it (my teacher advised me not to). What do you guys think? Also, where can I find a detailed list with the kanji and vocab that N4 has compared to N5?

You were just doing it in a way that wasn't beneficial. That doesn't mean music and english subbed anime can't be helpful. Subs don't take away the original Japanese voice track, but it makes sense that if you use those subs to ignore the voices, then it's not going to teach you Japanese.

I only spent about a year watching anime with subs on before I switched entirely to raws, but I had started learning Japanese right around the same time I started getting into Japanese cartoons, so there was a lot I gained from that year of subbed anime. A huge base of grammar intuition and common vocabulary. Same goes for music, it taught me a decent amount of vocabulary and it also taught me what Japanese music is like.

I'm not sure what you mean.
I look at the kanji and make up an extremely short "story" or just a few words on what I think I see.
Example:
一緒: "they both sneezed at the same time" (the left part looks like 2 people sneezing)
結婚 "on the day (of the wedding), the short woman kissed the worrier and sneezed"
好き: "little girls are pleasing"
Some of them are more abstract or retarded but as long as they work they're fine.

Am I doing something wrong?
An no, I don't actually recall the whole thing each time I come across the word. It's the part of analyzing the kanji on a deeper level in order to gain a visual or semantic understand of it that somehow relates to the actual meaning that helps me remember the word.
And if that ever fails, I can always just fallback on the mnemonic.
But lately I've been having trouble with gaining a deeper visual or semantic understanding of the kanji which is making it harder for me to recall.
Should I try writing some of them?

No, not like manga or that, that's too hard. Try NHK Easy.

Too easy? Go to CoR and download one of those readers, the one with English translations next to it. Try your best not to look at the translations until reading the Japanese make your head hurt. Then check the English part and see how well you did. Do this until you finish all the readers (there's like 6 books in there).

Try the books that make your head hurt again. Maybe try audiobooks.

That's what I initially figured too, but there are enough exceptions and inconsistencies in the pronunciations that it proved trickier than I thought. Of course you may very well be better at it than me but y'know, just don't get too comfortable relying on the "normal" rules because that'll probably come back to bite you. Plus not every word is a simple 好き, some are closer to stuff like 承る.

In any case like I said, everyone takes a different approach and path so I can't really tell you what'll work for you. What personally worked for me was creating a pre-set list of associations I can use for everything, so that when I see a new word I can just stick them together and only ever have to come up with context which ties them to the meaning. The thing is that I tied mine to most common sounds, so if you ignore pronunciations then that's obviously not gonna work for you the same way.

But at the very least I recommend detaching radicals from full words, that's simply too many elements to juggle at once. Optimally by the time you see a word you already have an idea of what the kanji it in represent, and you can create your mnemonic or visualization out of a combination of the kanji meanings alone. That way you'll practically never end up with more than 2-4 elements which is much more manageable.

Give your book a day or two to prove itself and, if it's not so good you want to keep reading it for the rest of your life, drop it. 90% of everything is trash.
