Slowpoke I know, but I just finished Yume Nikki. I liked the atmosphere and soundtrack a lot, even though it got a bit grindy near the end, though that has more to do with me wanting to reach the ending than the game itself. Why is Uboa so famous? It didn't seem that different from other events in the game.

I also just finished the manga, found it be pretty bad.

People got spooked by it and hyped it up because they love jumpscares even though they say they hate jumpscares. Also it's something you'd never see on your own unless you're a total autist.

I thought it was a cool idea but very overrated

The atmosphere that Yume Nikki creates is perhaps the best of any game that I've ever played.

It's completely random. I'm sure plenty of people got it in just one switch, not to mention just switching between a few times to see the differences in the room and the nice music change.

Maybe over the entire time the game was played, but it's not like the audience of this game is gigantic or anything for lots of people to have statistically gotten it on the first try blind. That is, plenty may have gotten it on the first try, but doubtful it was anywhere near a significant amount before people went in specifically looking for it.

Before it truly took off, the most people said was that there was indeed an event you could witness if you went back and forth into that house, turning off the light.

This was in guides since the game is huge and there's a lot. Most didn't spoil anything, including Uboa, they just told you where to go and what to do to activate events. This is how Uboa initially gained notoriety, because unlike a typical jump scare it's much more unnerving that shocking or scary. There isn't a stinger sound effect, the music and noise aren't very loud, and if I remember right when he appears the screen flashes white rather than a red or something. It's very disturbing, so it's no wonder people spread their genuine opinions that "that was fucking scary". I know that's how I experienced it, at least. I see that only in recent times people are downplaying it and calling the game overrated, which is disappointing. There's a lot of good and interesting stuff in the game, Uboa included.

OP here. The Uboa event didn't really disturb me that much compared to other events within the game. The main reasons were probably because I already knew about it in the first place, and that I had kind of overhyped it for myself before actually starting the event. I could imagine that it would've been much more effective if had only been hinted towards it.

Going to give some of the fangames a shot. Know very little about them, so some of the more shocking events within them might catch me more off-guard.

I would say that "girls in blue dresses losing faces" event was much more eerie.

Pretty sure I knew about it first time, and also subsequent times, but the amount of light-switch flickering you do and really catch you off-guard, I remember doing it once for probably over half an hour without any luck and just when I finally let my guard down I got spooked good.

You mean gaining "faces" when you use cat effect?

Yes, should have been more precise. For some reason it was a very strong image for me.

It's not scary though. You guys are just a buncha pussies, and I don't mean that in a internet tough guy way.

The game is also overrated. It's interesting, but imagine when anime was getting popular and people were like "wtf is anime" and watched Akira. And then those people go around saying Akira is the greatest shit ever. That's what this game is like.

Also you forgot to reinforce your suggestion that people didn't typically get the uboa scene unless they were looking for it or being an autist.

Yes, yes, Anonymous, you're very cool for having a different opinion.

I burned out on exploration about an hour into the game (picking forest first made it worse), so I used guide to help me find everything worth seeing. It was cool, I don't think I'd call the game good, but it was cool and memorable. Some parts were slightly disturbing, especially if you added some speculations on top of them and there are lots of speculations on the internet. I also enjoyed the manga, wasn't terrible, definitely could be better though.

I've never played any of the fangames but I intend to, I've got .flow installed but I can't find the willpower to actually start playing.

Literally. I can't believe I played all the way through it only finding out about the normal speed up thing on my own. Looking up stuff about it later and seeing there was an even faster glitch was pretty fun going back in and outrunning the really fast bird woman and stuff.

The music really got me when I started it up the first time. I'm a sucker for good music in pretty much any medium, so that's a big plus for me in terms of immersion.

I'm glad everyone "forgot" about Dream Diary and everything went back to normal.

Not much to say about it. It was an alright fangame.

Wait, there's an "ending" to it? You mean I didn't actually finish the game?

Just the normal ending from putting all your eggs in the main room and waking up.
