This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, Japanese video games, etc. Formerly referred to as /djt/, it has been renamed to better reflect its present usage.

Read the Guide linked below before asking how to learn Japanese:

The estimate for 4 years seems to exceed that of the US Foreign Service Institute's estimate for achieving basic fluency for a relatively difficult to learn language; leading me to believe that this estimate actually does mean a very respectable amount of proficiency.

Is that really true? Would it only take 4 years studying properly at an hour or two a day (assuming no learning disability and horribly inefficient methods)? If so, thank god, that's another 4 years I can live on without killing myself for.

Huh? I'm referring to the line in the DJT guide's questions section where it answers 'How long does it take to learn Japanese?' with 4 years and I'm inferring the subsequent result based on what the US FSI estimated for basic fluency (one site puts this number at 720 hours). 2 hours everyday for 4 years would be 2924 hours (including leap day) which is more than 4 times the amount the estimate stands at.
>>18615900
Whilst I can't pull up any meaningful tables or valid data to support what I'm about to say, I suppose it's referring to a more-or-less acceptable knowledge of the language with enough accuracy to properly convey your thoughts, whilst still being distinctly 'foreign' and not at a native level.

Immediately identify the AJATT tool by his thinking DJT is a set in stone method and not an anonymous language learning community with a collection of learning resources. In his tiny mind nobody on DJT has ever learned Japanese if he can't go on Youtube and subscribe to them as well as donate to their Patreon to read their blog. He comes here talking about how great RTK and AJATT is because he is not in the mood in doing mind numbingly boring RTK exercises. He does not understand the thread and board culture and posts wojak images while greentexting, an obvious sign his Japanese learning started with the so called "Matt" shitposter stirring him on to clog up the Daily Japanese Thread with low quality posts.
The change in name was supposed to be signal that discussion should be about the language itself centered around Japanese media, not incessant talk about learning methods by irrelevant Youtubers. Leave this thread and follow your method if it is so great. Stop posting on this thread. You have a Discord for your own kind.

Production on conversation level is by far one of the easiest skills you can obtain. The vocabularly used is extremely limited and you just won't use what you don't know whereas you can come across such things in other fields all the time.

This will be my first and final comment on the subject in this thread but the op image and previous suggestion were posted by myself last thread. It was not at all for any shitposting purposes and I did not make this thread.
The following are the only posts I have made on the subject:
>18600692
>18601254
The reason I bothered to make a post about it is to quell any false flag arguments. For further disclosure the current op format, aside from the "Formerly referred to as [...]" was also something I posted, on /int/ when the threads were dying after a handful of posts but no one took issue with it so it wasn't a problem. This was also in no way done for shitposting purposes.
There is no attempt to turn the thread into a secret club or anything else, only an individual suggestion to bring the thread back inline aligned with what it really is: an otaku/weeb/whatever-you-call-it Japanese language learning thread that originated on /a/ and is still fundamentally the same where it counts -the guide and related resources- to when it was on /a/.
If the op not reflecting the images is an issue I can change most of those without too much trouble. There are a small handful of such images I've thrown together that reposted a bit for some reason, which can be changed to say whatever, really.
If the posting community ultimately rejects this premise then so be it but please don't use an earnest suggestion as grounds to blame other people for things they didn't do or try to make a conspiracy out of it. It was a single suggestion by a single person with no ulterior motives.

Hope that cleared up any misunderstandings.

I mean what's the other alternative than to believe a person to some degree beyond the ability that they showcase? Native speakers of Japanese didn't make compelling learning materials/method for foreigners so we have to make do with whatever there is.
DJT guide was written by someone who surely hasn't show off their Japanese near-native fluency nor is anyone expecting that.

I'm so glad I just used the fantastic resources of the guide and never involved myself with the shitposters. I genuinely never cared if someone else wants to talk shit about the guide and instead argue in favor of some money-making scheme here. I'm not really sure how the AJATT/Matt thing has somehow changed the narrative but let me remind you that you have been debating whether to use core 2k or RTK as a beginner's resource long before AJATT/Matt ever entered the conversation. And let me give you a second reminder that both core 2k and RTK are literally baby's first introduction to Japanese. So these new RTK shippers disguised as AJATTers and Matt subscribers you so vehemently debate are people who have been studying Japanese for like a month or two. That's all I'm gonna say. I also have no idea what to study next which causes that choking feeling to become even stronger. Has anyone ever experienced the same thing? How do I stop this feeling? It's just one ass-ravaged faggot trying to push his dumb /r9k/-tier fears and insecurities in the thread. Most people don't give a flying fuck because at the end of the day it won't change much and it's not hard to go back to renaming the thread back to DJT. The whole /int/ vs /jp/ DJT thing is a whole different topic, and it does make sense that some people wouldn't like discussion (or whatever is left from a discussion) to go off-topic because of some retards flagposting in /int/, which granted, didn't happen quite as often the last times I went there. The whole split is kinda stupid, but then again back then there wasn't much of a choice. Both threads are much more similar than people want to make it seem.

These contradictory posts don't compute for me. If they were similar, and if the fears of flagposting never really happened (even though it was the excuse these guys gave the mods in order to make a 2nd DJT here), then why the fuck are the threads split? People who want DJT should just migrate to /int/ and leave these autistic fucks here with their temper tantrums and autistic arguments. People went to /int/ because it was the only place to go first, and everyone was complaining that the /jp/ mods were a pain in the ass to deal with to even consider making threads here (although I think they even tried making threads and they got deleted on sight, I don't really know how they ended up allowing the threads here). In the end the second thread here happened and some people already got used to /int/ so they didn't consider worth moving here, while others couldn't stand it over there and migrated. People just get used to different stuff, and they stay more because of the fear of change instead of there being any particular advantage to being in either thread. No one's going to migrate to /int/ for DJT because this place is already DJT. There are autists in both threads and in every board in general, and also there's pointless arguments and shitposting everywhere as well, but the fag I'm referring to is the one who throws his autistic fit and changes the thread's name for no real reason, and he certainly is just on retard.

Well obviously you weren't with us on /a/. The mod over there actually took the DJT thread that was up at the time and physically moved it on /int/. DJT users had no choice in the matter. For the rest of what you said, you're sort of right I guess, except for the part about there being as much shitposting on both DJTs. The one here has way more shitposting, and that even after the assiduous mod gets done deleting half the posts in each thread. /int/'s DJT has no such mods, and even then contains a lot less shitposting than here. This was always an autism den full of shitflinging, even though people here tried to make it seem like /int/ was like that with accusations of flagposting and the like (which is in part what made mods consider letting a second version of DJT be here...all built on lies and bullshit autistic screeching)

I've used both threads at times since the split and honestly this is just false. I used DJT while it was still in /a/, but I wasn't in /a/ during the exact thread that got moved, I arrived next thread when there was a shitstorm over /qa/. And already back then there was a whole bunch of shitflinging in /a/, which just got translated to /int/ and afterwards, here. Threads can become trainwrecks real quick, that's nothing new. Also every once in a while a shitposter comes and shits up threads just because. A while ago there was one faggot posting with a NZ flag over on /int/ and it seemed like he just google translated random shit and posted in unrelated languages, and threads got derailed immediately everytime, especially because he explicitly ban-evaded to keep going. I don't know if that was just a one time thing or if the retard got tired and left, but that kind of autistic things isn't exclusive to this board.

I watched this whole video and some others in his channel... And while I do agree with his points and methods to Learn Japanese, sadly... I HATE HIM AS A PERSON!

Just because he's at fluent level of japanese, he's contantly shitting at everyone else and talking like he's the god and we are still children, with that I mean that his way of speaking is rather rude and constantly reminding of everyone else's weak spots in such a wrong way.

He even published videos talking about other learning japanese channels, BUT... (Don't hate on me yet), I do know that he's right, the channels that he post something about it, really were learners trying to sound like "masters", but still making mistakes that any Natives would notice, he's right on that, BUT... He just sounds sooooo arrogant and even make personal attacks which he's not even sure if he's right or not, he just attacks without any proof... Did he need to attack that guy just to empasize how that guy "MUST BE" (that's exactly what he did in his videos, deduce how the other person must be) just to make us trust his methods and actual fluency level. God, that's so dumb and immature...

He remembers me some of my teachers that really had a lot of knowledge under their belt, but where so terrible at explaining and ever worse at something called "HUMILITY" that it turned impossible for me to ever like or respect any of them.

>the precise meaning of the word
Where will this meme die? The meanings of your cards and your answers depend only on you. You can make it as precise and perfect as you want. If you mean the difference among endless synonyms that depends on context I don't really see why you would care until you're striving for production ability. But even in this case it's highly debatable whether you should even think about this stuff early in your studies.
>2. It's easier to remember words encountered in context.
How it's easier and why? If I add a word in anki it doesn't mean that it will magically disappear from any text.
And trying to memorize the words purely from the context can be a lot more time inefficient than just adding a card in anki and going though the reviews. It takes me about 40
seconds in average to add a card including its definitions from japanese dictionary, then another ~35 seconds on the card until it gets mature (if I don't click again). And I'm sure that it takes a lot more to look for a word in a dictionary until you nail it down. With 20k+ words it very well can make a difference of hundreds of hours. Some anti-ankers here even say that they hand write kanjis.
Not even saying that you will read a lot faster hence efficiently when you know more vocab.

It's easier because the brain remembers things by making associations. Context makes it easier to create associations than looking at a word in a vacuum.
I know you will misunderstand the above answer because you didn't read the conversation properly though.

I tried sentence cards, the problem is that you only remember the new word in the context of a unique sentence. Your brain associates the preceding sounds of the sentence before the new word as a signal to pronounce the reading of the word, just like poetry, you don't realize you don't actually know the reading associated with the kanji. When encountering the same word later on in my reading practice I could not even recognize the word as a "known word", even though anki was supposed to make me remember it, that's because even though I knew the meaning, I couldn't connect the pronunciation with the kanji.

It's not a "reference" to jack shit, it's just what the word 負ける means. From its nuance of giving in. Why is this expression not あたまをふる?
What is is the nuance difference between あたま and かぶり?

大体それで合ってます
ただし、「足」がlegの意味で使われることも多いよ

「頭」の訓読みは、基本的に「あたま」
これだけ

それ以外の訓読みは、慣用表現(idiomatic expression)で しか、(普通は)使用されません
ニュアンスの違いはよく分からない 特に感じないです

It means just one person is enough, thus 10 is excessive and thus it won't work out so well.
