Played through Tsukikage no Simulacre.

I read some anon's post from archives and have to agree with all his complaints, the game paradoxically manages to be both rushed and padded at the same time. It feels the game could’ve been easily condensed into two main routes, one for Rei and Kurenai each while using the already existing multiple endings. If so maybe the game could’ve used that time to develop the character relations that actually mattered.

As the worst offender, if Miyu route, in fact if the entire character never existed it would have had zero bearing on the game's story. Probably the blandest eroge heroine I’ve ever come across. She has literally no characterization or actual traits apart from being *one* of the protagonist's many childhood friends, the "romance" is completely out of left field as it’s in other routes (but most so here), she has absolutely nothing to do with the main plot and the route reveals nothing that wasn't already revealed in the first route. In it the protagonist spends his time doing fucking nothing as well. Yet due to enforced order you have to play through it anyways. Other routes elicit a similar feeling to lesser extent.

Romance in general was really sudden, like every single heroine has a “liked the protagonist all along” hand wave and then he himself ends up in love with them on the spot. This is true even in Kurenai route where they practically spend the short entirety of it just having sex, followed by what is supposed to be an emotional finale. Protagonist himself is the usual passive yasashii plank for most of the game, though funnily enough to the game’s credit it’s even used as kind of a plot point. His special plot coupon power on the other hand that’s revealed at the start is properly used only once in the entire game which makes you ask what was even the point of it. He already has a special connection to Kurenai due to meeting her as a kid so it feels like the plot could’ve done without it.

Actual main content wise the game isn't really shining either and I think it fails as both mystery and horror, first because it's obvious there's something magical going on that works as the plot demands so any investigations and exploring the seemingly mysterious mansion itself and such feel largely irrelevant despite how long the game spends time on them, and latter simply because it’s just not plain scary. I somewhat tensed up during the first introductory parts but the game doesn’t just manage to deliver when it actually blows its load. Even the payoff for the drama isn’t that cathartic considering how all over the place / minimal the actual character development is, and the final endings + epilogue were kind of silly.

You know how sometimes in comedy series (South Park's writers especially love this trope), you'll have a character who's going through all of the motions of a heroic rant or a moment of sentimentality, with the show's soundtrack and visuals 100% behind them, but the actual content of their speech is a bunch of stupid bullshit that's obviously lacking in anything that's going to make the audience feel hyped or touched, with that contrast being the punchline?

That's basically how I consumed any scene where they tried to make this faggot seem like an upstanding gentleman with a paternal nature, and goddamn, was I right to do so.

It's amazing how Gilbert made a full loop of being an asshole.
What I mean is, first you have a simple bastard that you hate, a typical villain.
But if he keeps being a bastard eventually he becomes so overdone that he becomes likable like a comic book villain, like "oh this asshole is here again, let's kick kiss ass".

He's pretty badly written. If he'd not have a literal IQ of 10 or whatever, you'd have certain game over in the second route or so of Dive 1. He has his task. He can easily fulfill it, as there's nobody there to stop him. What does he do? Unzip, swing his dick around and tease the protag. Until he dies. 10/10
I really can't take that guy serious. Or rather, anything that involves him. Honestly, I don't like stories that only somewhat function because the villains are incapable of doing anything even remotely right.

Concerning AI wizzards.
I don't think they can do magic and shit.
IIRC, Scavenger from BSZ was augmented by AI and couldn't invent for shit.
AIs are simply a different species. The fact that they can reproduce VR doesn't mean that they can invent stuff like humans can or solve problems as efficiently. Plus, they're created by humans. Can they even reproduce without them? Plus, in Baldr series, AIs don't have ego so there's no reason for them to try to eliminate the other living beans.

Well it wasn't really more story, just the exact same one repeated for 5 routes with a few differences. Only Soras route felt fresh. In my opinion the gameplay isn't really fun either if the game becomes that long, mainly due to the terrible unlocking system and zero incentive to switch it up since one combo works for the entire game, even on Hard.

I haven't done a DPS comparison or anything, but I'm pretty sure that later moves hit harder. Also, personally, I wouldn't be able to stand staring at all of those unspent orbs. It's already annoying enough that you can't access the development menu during the VN segments.

Redoing your combo can be a little tricky, but that's also kinda what makes it fun. I could definitely see it being a casual filter, since it's up to the player to figure out what combos into what and what the timing looks like.

I'm finishing Eris' arc it seems, and while it's only tangentially related to the main story, the character writing carries it pretty well. I just hope the heroines don't drop off to into complete irrelevance after you've chosen not to romance them.

Dunno who that is, but Dear my Abyss is pretty good. The only problem is its ending. Or rather, it's feels like it's half the story. What's there is pretty damn fine though, including some of the "earlier" endings. Liked the underground tunnel "route" myself there. Those who read it probably know what I mean.
I also really liked the presentation and that it doesn't assume you are dumb and can't think for yourself. For example the graphical presentation is exactly that. It's not that hard to figure out why it is how it is, but the game never tells you explicitly so. Not like it could without breaking the fourth wall I guess. It's also really nice on a psychological level. I actually didn't really consider it that much horror or mystery myself. It's there, but what's there the most is psychological. Very nice Lovecraft, in a way.

>it doesn't assume you are dumb and can't think for yourself

exactly this. I really hate when vns patronizes the reader by explaining god damn everything like you’re 3 year old or something. Dear My Abyss never fully reveals every little details behind the plot, giving you the pleasure of actually finding out and realizing things for yourself - and that is essential for mystery games, in my opinion.

It’s just not name dropping. Aside from the fact it shows the horror of slowly creeping insanity that gradually changes people around you and even the protagonist herself, which is a typical Lovecraftian horror, the whole theme of fantastical “dream” serves as a crucial plot device during the game, which in my opinion is another important factor that shapes “Lovecraftian” tales that are often overlooked by many people.
Just play the game and look for yourself. If you have trouble finding the game, I can give you one.

Finished 少女と年の差、ふたまわり。

As >>18543364 already mentioned it's the type of eroge where you get exactly what the title says with relatively little drama or comedy for that matter; nothing more or less, meaning how well the premise and Mizuka herself end up being to your liking decides whether you find the game worthwhile or not. It's no Damekoi for sure, not that I was expecting it to be.

I think the game could've given a bit more screentime to main heroine's hostess mom Rin, and I found it kind of weird that the game gave her flashbacks but not to even younger Mizuka despite the protagonist also knowing the latter since she was a baby. The taboo aspect of the relationship is also *mostly* handled internally as you'd expect out of a pure love game, as in the protagonist himself thinking he's doing something wrong and considers chickening out, rather than some kind of "you and me against the world" kind of thing or something else.

As for the game's other main shtick of both the protagonist and Mizuka being loners at heart, I think the game could've emphasized that part of their personalities more even if it would've resulted in more brooding, reserved or even angsty characters, if nothing else than to make Mizuka stand out more as a heroine. The night light thing was cute but I kind of wanted something more. Then again it could just be my bias talking since after Lovely x Cation's Aya and protagonist both being turbo-loner gamers nothing has quite yet managed to scratch that itch again.

I also like my SoL but that could've used more variety here as well: the vast majority of the game consists of cooking and housework, bath, sleepover, picking up Mizuka with car (and like someone on EGS complained it's kind of weird it doesn't get a CG considering how often it happens) and later ichaicha at the protagonist's apartment with the more unique dates or other events feeling few and far in between. Being relatively short definitely worked in the game's favor.

What if I told you I'm teetering on the edge of depression right now?
For me that things that help me make an effort to live a meaningful life have always been those cathartic experiences where you can feel that there is weight to the characters actions, even when they seem to be mundane, and where, whether it ends in tragedy or not, you can walk away from it understanding and sharing their attitude toward life to some extent. Escapism doesn't give you anything of value, it just pulls you deeper into the swamp of aimlessness.

Finished 2 routes in Tsuyokiss, Kinu and Erika/Hime. First of all: Yay for Wakamoto.

It's pretty clear how Majikoi evolved from this and to be honest, I feel like it evolved too much. The "big sister" turned from just being very strong but still feeling close enough in this to being inhuman, possible breaking you into two halves accidentally and just being SUPER out of reach in Majikoi. As such one of my main issues of Majikoi isn't in this: Tsuyokiss remains much more grounded. Even the most unreachable girl doesn't feel too far away.
While that's nice, the girls are still not very interesting as traditional heroines. Great characters, but I feel like the game is at its worst when it tried to do romance instead of its other stuff. And unlike Majikoi I feel like romance is more pronounced here. Or rather, nothing else really happens.

Both routes had a similar structure. Pretty much 3 arcs: excursion, sports and final drama. For Kinu I had fun until the final drama arc started which was pretty dumb. I feel like I've read the same thing before as well. Just hope that wasn't Wanko's route in Majikoi, that would be kinda sad. Once that was over the game had 1.5 months or so of random short events, similar to how Cation games are plagued by way too many short and lackluster events. I know I know, girl needs her H, but seriously. Talk about boring. The game skips some days, but this was still way too much random short stuff.
Hime's route actually ended after the third arc, but was generally not very good. The last arc was even super short and had no real purpose in the end. Why did that girl do what she did there? Who knows. Her problem can't have been very big. The route is otherwise plagued by many short events as well, just more spaced out, and generally never touches anything that makes Hime possibly interesting: Her being Hime in the school and the daughter of a rich family owning a pretty big company and all. Yeah, it's literally ignored. What the heck was this route? Fucking Yuzusoft did better ojousama routes in something like Noble Works.

There are good things about this. I mostly like the comedy and the character work wonders when the game doesn't try to do romance, in my opinion. But it really is a mixed bag.

And done with Sunao's route, full of sunao jokes, coming Tosakas and whatnot.

My favorite route, I just like it when the protag and heroine really don't like each other at first. For good reason here. This girl wasn't in the original release, and yet her route feels like one of the most important ones, if not the most important one. During middle school she was the major trigger for why the protagonist changed his view on life and acts like he does during the game. And they just don't agree with each other in that regard.
The events on here route just feel so right, how both of them develop and already have developed since what happened in middle school. As a result you also see a nice difference between middle and high school as well. A few years can mean a lot, especially because Sunao technically doesn't do anything wrong. She just demands a lot.
One problem exists however: The ending. It's the same as if you'd have a final battle in a shounen anime, where the protag loses and then finds out why. Then he'd know: "hey if I pay attention to this, I could win next time!" Credits roll. That's how Sunao's final arc feels. Now, this "final battle" wasn't really prepared throughout the route or anything, so it's just a really weird incomplete final arc, but still. Feels weird.

Now I need to decide if I should bother with the sequel or directly jump into 3. 2 wasn't included in the collection of "all" games, so I feel 2 was just removed from canon or something. Just playing Sunao's route doesn't work either, given route enforcement.

I didn't write about Yoppi's because it's hard to take it seriously. Skipped the teacher's short and skimmed a little in the remaining two routes, so I get to know what they are about. Not like Tsuyokiss has a lot of plot, but I figured I may as well.

Sunao's route being one of the most important ones is pretty easy to see from how much she influenced the protagonist in middle school. It's the reason why I left her for last after I played the prologue. (which I'd recommend after playing like that as well) She barely comes up, but it felt like she was endgame based on what little you get to know about the protag's past there. Given how her route directly deals with the protags view on life, why he changed to the "wuss" he's called by most of the girls and so on, her route is one of the most important ones. This game doesn't have a true route or something like that, so absolutely most important would be pretty subjective.

.. also I just realized that the anime is about freakin' Sunao. Guess I know what to do next. Funny how she wasn't even in the original game.
