I think theyre fine. Olympic Mascots have always been historically pretty ugly with the exception of a few. Even the Mascots for this years winter olympics that were well received were only alright (to me anyway). Im serious though, these are god-tier compared too most passed mascots.
Also im pretty sure they need to be original, so no they cant just use X or Y characters like people keep saying. It would also be pretty poor show for them too just lazily use something existing, not too mention they would need too pay for the rights too use them, split profits from merch and other shit.

One of the few genres that could work would be a variety show, and they are notoriously hard to write for, let alone animate. That's just for starters, it would get tougher from that point on to mesh the concept of a vocaloid and an animation without it feeling at all 'staged'.
