Its not so bad overall but some AFSCs(jobs) are much worse than others.

Basic training sucks, you have to run about 2-3 miles every other day, you get an average of 4 hours of sleep a night, TI's are screaming at you for every little thing just like in the movies. You think things get better when you graduate and you're in tech school.

Then you're in tech school and you think it sucks cause you have still have so many restrictions and curfews and you have idiot classmates and you think things will get better when you finally get to the ``real Airforce'' AKA your first duty station.

You finally get to your base and your job and if you're maintenance(1/3 of the AF) you get to work 10-14 hours a day doing hard ass physical labor on airplanes and other heavy equipment often outside in freezing cold or blistering hot weather. If you're security forces(other 1/3 of AF) then you work 10-14 hours a day standing outside guarding some entry control point in the middle of nowhere.

Maybe if you get a cushy job with computers or finance its bearable but you still have to put up with the extreme amount of stress being in the military puts on you, no matter what your job is. Every day you have you have to shave and put on your uniform perfectly, if one little thing is off like your fucking shoelace came untucked then some SNCO will get up your butt about it. You have to keep current on dozens of different forms of training and certifications and you have to attend bullshit sexual harassment briefings all the time. Every few months you get randomly drug tested and you have to drop everything you're doing, even if you're watching a movie offbase, to go and piss in a cup.

This is all when you're just a lowly airman by the way, you usually have resentment for your supervisors and their rules but then when you actually become one yourself and are put in charge of other people your life becomes 10 times worse. You're literally responsible for every stupid thing they do and you have maybe 5 hours of free time a week after filling out performance reports and maintenance forms and mountains of other paperwork.

There are some ``otaku culture'' types in the AF. probably more so than other branches but you will still be surrounded by bro-dudes 99% of time who spend whatever short lunch or smoke breaks you get talking about football, cars, the women they fuck, pop culture, unfunny TV shows, playing halo and madden and whatever else ultra-normalfag things they are into.

I know its not shit compared to serving in an actual combat job but the change in lifestyle is almost indescribably different compared to being a normal collegefag/NEET /jp/ user. There are good things about being in the military, though, I might expand on it later if anyone cares.

OK, well, there are some good things I admit. If you have no work experience at all, they will teach you a trade and pay you to do so basically. Some jobs have more applicability in the civilian world than others of course. These are things you can find readily online along with paycharts and other benefits listings. If you manage to make it through you get the GI bill, pays for your college and you can get about $1000 to $2000 a month extra depending on where you live. I plan on living the NEET life when I am discharged but its nice to have that option. One advantage is the public has been practically brainwashed with boot worship. I know its sick but I look forward to taking advantage of this. If anyone be they friend, family or whoever would dare hassle me about my not wanting to work I would explode all over them about how I served and they didn't, about how they don't know what sacrifice or honor is or blah blah blah that sort of thing. I sometimes hate myself for how entitled I feel, its a weird thing, hard to explain.

Surviving basic training and military life in general does give you confidence. It will force you to develop social skills and real life grownup responsibilities whether you like it or not. It can help you with some aspects, before I joined I had severe OCD and going thru basic kind of shocked it out of me. I still have it but to a much lesser degree. On the other hand it can make other mental issues worse as well. There was a point where I was extremely depressed for about 6 months and I had thoughts about killing myself everyday during the worst of it. I got over it eventually but at no point since I've been in have I had periods when I was as happy as I was before I joined. I know its wrong, but sometimes I simply feel a sense of superiority over the majority of people both on /jp/ and IRL who are not servicemembers even though they're most likely better people than me. Its kind of like if you learn how to drive a manual transmission or maybe how those linux nerds or japanese speakers feel. That is, something generally inconsequential but only a few know how to do it which makes you feel better than those who don't.

It will probably change the your outlook on life, think about the way you saw things before and after your exposure to imageboards. It has made me slightly more bitter and cynical. If you don't hate women yet, you will after your exposure to dependants. The majority of things you do seem pointless, like busting your ass to generate flying missions where all the planes do is drop fake concrete bombs in Montana somewhere. The amount of waste and money spent you see on a daily or even hourly basis is simply mind boggling. The only things that made me feel like I was doing any good was when I had to help other airman once in a while. I remember one time I came across a small crew refueling a jet out on a parking spot far away from everyone else. They had been out there for hours and were dying of thirst because they were a bunch of new guys and forgot to bring water with them. They couldn't leave the area for safety reasons so I brought them a few bottles of water from the back of my truck. Seeing how much that relieved them, that one little thing made me feel better than any of the dozens of stupid pep talks and motivational briefings the higher ups would give about our mission success rate or some award our squadron got. I know it sounds utterly cliche but sometimes it is about the men next to you(yes I know just like that guy says in Blackhawk down), and I do feel closer to them than any of the rest of my family, despite them being normalfags of the highest order.

>> No.1851640,28 [INTERNAL]

>>1851640,27

Anyways, if you want to learn a trade for free and you have nowhere else to go, then try Natl Guard or Reserves and be a weekend warrior. If for some crazy reason you want active duty then consider the Coast Guard as they have a no-shit peacetime mission. If you want to actually see combat then you might have better luck in the French Foreign Legion as the US is drawing down its overseas commitments. If you want high speed low drag operator bullshit but without risking your life or dealing with garrison life when not training, I've heard there are special forces units in the National Guard or something.

Keep in mind the military will take more from you than you get back from it overall, and is not something I'd recommend for the ``average'' /jp/er.

It sucks that ghost is shutting down, if you have anymore questions you could start a thread on tohnochan's /ot/ board, I check there about once a week. I know its filled with waifufags and /a/nikis and whatnot but theres too many normies on /k/ who wouldn't understand the jp/warosu point of view. Also its slow enough that its practically an archive itself.

>>1851640,32
you can join up till you're 29, it depends on your shipdate I think. Maybe reserves go up to 35. I have seen 27-28 age new airman, I personally think its a little awkward when on occasion they have a slightly younger sergeant giving them orders but they dont seem to mind at all.

Pretty much this. Half the roommates I've had are anime-watchers, but its only whatever shounen stuff is on netflix. The other nerds are into star wars and comic book movies but again they and what you could call ``social misfits'' are the minority.
