I just can't bite the superficial appeal of Mind of Steel.

Many of you rag on Shirou's idiocy on Fate route, ( I did too, he was a huge idiot ), but by the end of it, his undying passion that acknowledges his own idiocy and weakness but still unrelenting heart to chase his dream stood it, and it was beautiful in a stupid way.

Thematically, it stood out the strongest. Even though Archer's part in UBW had that as well, to be honest, it echoed much stronger in Fate route since Archer's beginnings were closer to Fate's, and thus the weakness that bound Shirou too.

Except it wasn't a victory. Saber was incapacitated, but so was he, and she'll get back up in ten minutes while with him it's permanent. He burned out right before the finishing blow, failed to keep Saber from returning to Rin (though whether or not she got there in time is debatable and left open to interpretation), and ended up a vegetable on the cave floor.

A loss by any other name is still a loss. Did he BEAT Saber? I'd say so, yes. But was it a victory? No, because he failed to achieve his objective.
