Just bought a bunch of instant ramen.

I've seen cup noodles quite a few times in anime, so is this really a thing in Japan, and which ones are the best?

I've recently visited Japan for two months and occasionly seen japanese people staying in hostels and such eat this stuff. Though it was ussualy these large plastic bowls with instant ramen.

That's the impression I got. It was always the otaku looking type that read manga and such. I mostly saw the salarymen eating the stuff in proper places.

It was fun seeing cafes/restaurants selling ramen being pretty crowded most of the time. Though the taste was a hit or miss for me depending on the place.

Anyway i'm sure somoene who actually lives in Japan can give you a much better answer on the instant ramen that's being eaten there.

They are not supposed to be as good as actual ramen. Its mainly meant to be quick meal or there are actually 0 ramen places opened by japanese people.

Does not compare to real ramen. Instant ramen is deep fried to remove the moisture from the noodles. There is a ton of extra fat added. Find a spot you can eat pic related locally (which I had tonight).

One of the reasons I don't eat instant ramen/cup noodles is because a thing like this simply does not satisfy me. How do these skimpy japanese eat one of those and get satisfied? I would need at least five of this to have my hunger satisfied. Setting that aside, pic related is the best you will have. It's like 1,2 grams of sodium though, so you better not eat it if you have hypertension or some other health issue.

Why do you online armchair nutritionists always bring this up as if you were the only ones capable of reading nutrition tables?
Instant ramen is a food of circumstances, for people like office people/students/lazy neets who neither have the time/energy to cook, nor the money to splurge on store meals. They store a dozen of these in their cupboards so when they return home at 11pm after working overtime/cram school, they can have a hot meal in less than 1 min.

Seconding this. Would be interesting.
Soba is pretty much the best instant noodle brand mainly because of the sauce. I think the regular yellow Soba is the best, but chili is good too. Green is teriyaki and there's also purple, but those tasted like they tried to achieve a bit too much for an instant snack type of food, I think.
