Looking through these Kōjien seems to be the one with the most entries and the one most up-to-date as it was last updated January 12, 2018. Is that any good? This piece seems to be kind of outdated anyway and doesn't talk about the newest releases of the dictionaries.

I personally wouldn't use anything without pitch accent info which Meikyou and Kojien seem to be missing.

This is Daijirin, Meikyou, Kojien, from the CoR.
I can see what that website is saying about Kojien and its priority of ordering definitions, I don't think I'd use it as a learner.

A lot of words have audio from which it's possible to tell pitch accent, though I don't worry about it too much as I don't plan on ever speaking Japanese anyway (or even aiming to talk like a native). My main concern is the quality of the entries and while I like the Meikyo definitions the best it seems to be bit barebones compared to the other dictionaries. I'm thinking I'll just continue using it on conjunction with JMdict.

Well, think of it this way. It's used less often than hiragana, however it's used often enough that almost every nontrivial piece of text is going to contain katakana. You can expect to see it used once every few sentences.
Of course some places like video games or some websites are going to have more than average katakana.

In the end, it doesn't matter. You're overthinking the importance of which order you learn the first 0.1% of the language.

I don't know about that specific one, but some of the Advanced or Upper Intermediate Japanese Pod 101 lessons we have in the CoR have 昔話 of similar difficulty so with that you'll get audio and a transcription both in Japanese and English. Unfortunately there are tons of lessons and it's been over a year since I've had them on my phone so I won't be able to help you find them.

Should I be worrying about remembering kanji sounds in the beginning or I can let that pass and focus on that after I can actually read things fine? I almost never rmemeber kanji sounds on anki, mostly the meaning. Be aware that I wish to be able to speak and hear it later as well, just want to know if I will have problems with this or if it's simple to memorize sounds later.

You should remember the pronunciation (sounds) of words. Do not remember pronunciations of individual kanji, if the individual kanji isn't a word that you're learning.

Otherwise you won't be able to sound out words in your head when reading which I imagine is pretty bad. But I don't know, maybe this idea is possible. It just sounds bad or at least very strange to me.

Plenty of words used to have kana like that because kana had never been updated according to pronunciation changes. When they modernized it in 1946 so all words were spelled phonetically, they decided to keep the particles in their old kana forms.

So は へ を are still pronounced わ え お when they are particles.

This is probably less confusing to read than if they were spelled phonetically too

The thing I don't get is that the article explains の in this context as an explanatory particle, but this example seems to be a completely different use of the particle, I can't see at all how it translates to what it apparently translates to.

朝ご飯を食べる - eat breakfast
ん (の) - explanatory particle, providing or seeking explanation
じゃなかった - did not

literally "eat breakfast, did not", so why does the "did not" turn into "should not have" and what purpose does の have in there? because it doesn't seem to be providing or seeking any kind of explanation in either translations.

に can do a hell of a lot
Here it's showing the indirect object of the action
The action is :

Made causative:
コンビニ弁当を買わせる to make someone buy a conbini bento
You are performing the action of "to make someone buy a conbini bento" ON the indirect object indicated by に

じゃなかった does not mean "did not"
It's not a auxiliary verb to make something past tense

What's going on here is の is nominalizing the clause before it and じゃなかった is negating it, but in past tense so it's just the speaker being remorseful about something that could have been done differently, saying I shouldn't have eaten breakfast

If it's in present tense like 朝ごはんを食べるんじゃない!
then it would be taken as a strong warning or imperative to not eat breakfast

 風に揺られる様子が、麦畑の中を狼が走っているように見えるからだ。

So it's more of a figure of speech? It doesn't really make grammatical sense to me.

>What's going on here is の is nominalizing the clause before it and じゃなかった is negating it
So you're taking a verb (eat breakfast), turning it into a noun (the eating of breakfast), and then negating it (not the eating of breakfast). Is that what you mean by negating it?

I'm not sure if something like this qualifies for a figure of speech. I think it's just grammar that does not translate into English in any comprehensible way.

You see this type of phrasing a lot whether it's remorse like 来るんじゃなかった or compulsory like 止まるんじゃねえぞ or さあ、行くのだ

This anon >>18435680 is right about the meaning/nuance

>So you're taking a verb (eat breakfast), turning it into a noun (the eating of breakfast), and then negating it (not the eating of breakfast). Is that what you mean by negating it?

If I want to be able to pass the JLPT N3 upwards, I will need to learn how to write kanji right?
I fucked up, I haven't practised writing for years, I can read and identify a lot of kanji easily but when I put pen to paper I lose all memory of what the kanji even looks like.
I am not sure how to correct this? Am I really going to have to relearn kanji by writing them out over and over till till it gets stuck in memory?

Flash cards with Anki are nice and easy as I can do that everywhere. On the bus or waiting for an appointment etc but writing something physically isn't so convenient.
How do you all learn to write? writing them out physically over and over or do you use an application that lets you digitally draw the kanji?

I can write on a computer but when I decided to write out a physical diary to myself to get myself used to writing out longer sentences, I realised I couldn't recall the actual internals of the kanji, I know it approximate shape and I know perhaps the key radical but the rest is faded in my mind but if I see that kanji in text I know it instantly.

It is a really strange feeling you would think if I can recognise it, surely I should be able to just reproduce it.
It feels a bit like being able tell what an apple looks like and then drawing a shitty circle.
>>18437674
Ideally I would want to get N1. N3 is the lowest limit of usefulness in my opinion for the JLPT. My choice really is just N2 or N1 and I don't have total confidence that I could pass the N1.

Does anyone else have trouble "thinking" in Japanese when reading kanji? By that I mean I'm fairly good at remembering the concepts and actions kanji represent but have difficulty reproducing the actual moonspeak. For instance I can recognize almost instantly that 女 means girl/woman/female but it took me a good thirty seconds or so to actually remember the the pronunciation and by extension the hiragana spelling of おんな. Has anyone else have this problem? Are there any exercises I can do that could help me "think" more in Japanese like, for instance, reading aloud, or is greeting understanding just a function of overall time spent studying?

It's normal. Millions of educated Japanese and Chinese draw mental blanks on extremely easy kanji every day. No one wants to be the one who has to write on the whiteboard during meetings.

Don't pick up handwriting unless you need it for a job or intend to practice it for the rest of your life. It degrades pretty quickly once you stop, especially as a foreigner.

子knee千わ /jp/, I'm going through Anki 6k at the moment (about 2000 words seen, it's good fun) and was wondering if it's worth drawing kanji as you see them. I already do but only once per card for the first time I see them; as I'm thinking of doing a production deck after reading for a couple of 100 hours once I'm done with 6k, it might give me a head start on handwriting etc. So is it worth the time to write out every kanji before showing the next card?

Following on, is there a companion production deck to the reading 6k (i.e. english -> phonemics & orthography)?

idk man im on modafinil which can make a person get really autistic so maybe its just me

the point of anki is automation for spaced repetition. it optimizes being able recall/do something. The something is whatever is on the front of the card. every card is a test and if you're honest with how you answer the timings will place the card in timeslots that are good for retention

reading about adding processes to the back side of the card is just strange. what are you testing for? what happens if you cant recall every word in the back sentence? how does that relate to knowing or not knowing the word the card is intended to test? this is all just nonsense complexity for the sake of "practicing sentences", when there just plain better options available: sentence decks or just going out and reading

English (or western, rather) language is very different to Japanese. In English as long as you know how to read all 20-something letters of the alphabet you know how to read all of the words in a book. You might get the pronunciation wrong and you might not know what they actually mean, but it's not unheard of to just skip ahead a few adjectives and complex nouns and still retain a reasonable meaning for the entire sentence. As a non native English speaker myself, that's how I learned English. I just read a lot of difficult books and skipped over the words I did not know. A lot of them I learned later by context and association, a lot of them I had to look up after encountering them in sentences over and over again. As long as I know how to pronounce it (and 90% of the time I got it right, aside from stuff like 'choir' or weird pronunciations from foreign languages), then I won't get stuck in the learning.

With Japanese, however, it's a whole different matter. I can recognize a lot of kanji and kind-of understand their meaning by just looking at the components of a jukugo, but still I'd have no fucking idea how to read it or say it out loud. Nevermind the fact that a lot of kanji can look different but have the same reading/meaning and it's just a quirk of the author. The difference between a Japanese book is that if you don't know what a word is, you literally cannot read it.

This is the entire reason why you often see in TV shows or anime a smart 'bookworm' kind of character reading hard books and see their friend go "oh wow you are so smart, you can already read this kind of stuff". Growing up I never understood those scenes because I'd just think "well duh, of course I can read a book in my own language, there might be a few complex words but still it's readable", whereas in Japanese you *literally cannot* read it if you don't know those complex kanji, even if they are word you know already because it's your own mother tongue and you speak it every day.

>I believe its the single least efficient way. You're reading something made for native speakers, meaning you get everything from beginner to advanced stuff at once. You spend an absurd amount of time looking up words, the vast majority of which you will never use in real life.

>Textbooks made for learning japanese give you useful words and pacing such that you dont need to look up every few words while trying to read a book. Unless these words are used often, they're going to be quite difficult to remember, they're going to pile up, and you're only going to see them when you study them.

RTK + koohii + vocab is the god tier way to do it. Allow me to explain but before I fucking do, make sure you have a good grasp on hiragana, katakana and the basic grammar rules of the language. Alright, time to fuckin explain:

RTK by heiseg teaches you how to remember the kanji by doing little short stories or "mnemonics" and associate the kanji for it.

With the addition of learning the radials or primatives, which are essentially the building blocks of kanji. This will help you further break them down for you and make it piss easy to remember them, and combining this with mnemonics is an effective method for remembering them. It's important to reinforce this with the anki kanji deck + radical deck. however you won't actually learn how to "read" the kanji.

That's where koohii comes in. It's basically heisegs method but it teaches you the reading and meaning of the kanji and also provides further reinforcement as well as learning vocabulary that contain the kanji and reading. This will help you make educated guess on how the word is read if the same kanji appears in words you might see often which brings me to my important point.

You suppliment the koohii method along with reading native material. Start out basic and build your way up.

Look up vocabulary that are new to you and what they mean. As you see words that include the kanji that you come across more often when you read; the easier it will be to guess the reading of new words that include the kanji that you recognise. This will also make guessing what the word means based on the meaning of the kanji within the word easier as well.
Make sure to learn how the words are used in context within the sentences that might contain a specific situation for it. You should engage in the material you find interesting only in Japanese to keep you engaged.

If you wanna apply what you learned depending is to speak it. You want to put that knowledge into good use!

You might come across a problem where you translate words in English and then to Japanese which is a common problem but you can get yourself out of the habit with time. This is where a monolingual dictionary comes in which is pretty self explanatory combined with describijg daily situations in your life only in Japanese within your mind just to train and condition yourself into thinking in japanese.

Be consistent because that shit is super important. One final note is that making mistakes is completely fine and don't be afraid of making them. Receiving corrections is a sure fire way to learn fast.

Good luck! I know all of you faggots can learn Japanese and kanji! I believe you can do it. No, I know you fucking can because you gotta believe you can achieve this goal.

It depends if you want to make learning new words easier as well as knowing all the common use kanji so you won't have the feeling of being "stumped" when you come across them. It'll also help you make more educated guesses on how new words are read once you learned vocab that have kanji that you come across often.

Most of the time you'll guess the reading right and knowing the basic meaning of the kanji will give you a basic jist of what the new word you came across means so you'll stop looking at a dictionary less and have a general meaning what the word you read means and how it's said however it doesn't hurt to look the word up in a monolingual dictionary to get the meaning of the word.

I say monolingual just to prevent yourself in thinking in English when you come across vocab.

Good luck anon.

Hello, /djt/. First of all, I've read the djt guide. I want to ask a few question for references.
I've tried learning japanese before, remember all the hiragana, katakana and a few kanji (only recognize 200-ish, not able to write it though). Then, I stopped learning it because I've been busy recently with college stuff. Obviously, I have forgotten most of the them. So i have a few question since I want to start learning it, again.

1. How do you keep motivated to learn japanese? I got burned out after learning it for 1 month straight.
2. How do you manage time when you're very busy? especially if you're in university (stem major with lots of weekly report)
3. How long do you need to study japanese until you can hear AND understand native japanese? or more specifically, until you can read and understand japanese's internet environment (twitter, 2chan, raw manga or LN, etc). I've researched it quite a bit and know that it takes around 3-5 years. I asked this question just for further references.
4. Is it better to study native language <-> japanese or english <-> japanese? English isn't my mother tongue and my native language is very wild (no one cares about grammar, people can still understand you and you only use formal grammar in formal text like inquiry or application letter)
5. Any personal tips and trick that you can gives me? I'm from Asia so learning japanese will not be as steep as someone from europe/middle east or america.

Sorry for no TL;DR, and thank you very much. I will post this again in the next DJT thread because this DJT thread seems on the brink of dying.

Something like Yotsubato is lighter and therefore quicker.
The mid-end i would say to be shonen or things like 紫色のクオリア where plot advancements and exposition is more common.
VN's naturally take longer to read, followed by Light Novels and actual books.

I'm six months in and about 3500 anki cards later I can at least understand the general idea behind most of a VN protagonist's monologues, but there's still a whole fucking lot of words I haven't seen once in my life before.

Though at a point I stopped caring that much about words I didn't know, so I don't autistically look everything up. I'd rather just improve my comprehension with what I do know for now and deliver everything else from context. >Why wouldn't you memorize grammar?
I'm not telling you not to memorize grammar. I'm telling you not to memorize a grammar dictionary.
Memorizing grammar happens through input.
Learning all this grammar in theory is like reading a book on how to play tennis. You might see a few tips that set you in the right direction but there's a certain hard limit you're not going to get past until you actually play the fucking sport. Trying to memorize the book beforehand is a waste of time.

Hey, at least it's not a food analogy.
DOJG, even the "advanced" book covers grammar that you will most likely meet fairly often. It's something that you should definitely learn.

Btw, did you even read DOJG? It's not like a dictionary, it's similar to a grammar textbook.
It gives you a grammar element, then there's a page or two of explanations, a lot of example sentences, etc.
You don't use it as a dictionary, you can learn from it by reading it cover to cover just like you would with Genki or whatever.

>> No.18449329

>>18449252
Memorizing grammar is different from memorizing a grammar dictionary. Being able to recite a definition doesn't mean that you understand its usage. You're only going to learn grammar by reading, and you're still going to have to look up examples even of shit you memorized when the usage isn't completely straight-forward, so many people consider memorizing 600 cards in the first place to be a waste of time that gives a false sense of progress.
It isn't completely useless, but it's far more useful for being a human dictionary than for understanding Japanese, similar to studying kanji readings.

oh yea this takes at least 5 years of living in Japan and writing skills in Japanese along with a plethora of other things. If you can do 10 years here you get permanent residency which sounds like less of a hassle if you plan on living here long long term.

Anyone know if it's possible to change the font used by KanjiTomo? The default one it uses is horrible at displaying dakuten/handakuten, but I haven't been able to find any means of changing it.

Why would they look down on me if I had a good job there as an engineer and spoke Japanese? Also, I am not bad looking at all. Some more extreme otaku might not like me but I'm pretty sure Japanese people are generally well educated and I even know a Brazilian who lives there as an English teacher and married a Japanese woman.
