1834754 No.1834754 [Reply] [Original]

A few friends and I decided to host a Touhou panel at Sakura-con.

First things first, we all know of the failure that was the Otacon panel and we're going to try to make sure ours isn't a repeat of it.

Second, this panel won't be designed to cater to the hardcore touhou fans. It's primary goal is going to be to introduce people to Touhou in a way that all of us, or at least most of us, can take a look at and feel it would be an appropriate way to bring people into the series.

I know many of you would probably loathe the idea of this, but let's face it. Touhou is only going to gain a more substantial Western fan base as time goes on. Going along with that, how would you rather they be introduced to Touhou? Through a panel that in the end was one most of you approved of and would bring their knowledge up to a level where they could at least interact with us without looking like complete morons, or would you rather they just go "Oh these girls are so cute/hawt/JESUS CHRIST HUGE BREASTS" and then act on an intelligence level on par with the small amount of gaiatards who are into Tohou. See also the topic image as well. I'd prefer to not live in a world where people go "Touhou is a game?"

To accomplish the primary goal of making this a presentation that most of you would approve of (I'd say all, but that would be an impossibility no matter what), I'd like to enlist people from the various imageboards to help edit this as it comes together as well as the populace of those mesasgeboards whenever major updates occur in order to see what everyone thinks and where it could be improved. I have a few people here and there already onboard for helping, but getting a wide variety of people to help would definately be appreciated.

>> No.1834757

The main format of the presentation, as it stands right now, is going to be:
1) What is Touhou Project?
2) A bit of the history of Touhou
3) A look at all the games
4) The world of Gensokyo
5) The primary characters
6) The fan culture that surrounds Touhou
7) The music of Touhou
8) The art of Touhou

And then finishing it off with some live copies of the games going so people can experience the games and talk with each other as well. Never been to Sakura-con so I don't really know how the rooms work in terms of space or how many they can hold so if anyone can fill me on that, it would be help out.

I probably won't have a public release ready until mid-January as a result of not knowing that Sakura-con won't start putting together what panels are actually going to be presented so I pissed away a lot of time that could have been spent doing the panel away because I was hesistant to do anything until I knew there would actually be a panel to present this on, but I thought it would at least be a good idea to see what the public opinion is on this and to see who was interested in helping. I set up a gmail account for this, Touhoupanel, so anything you want to send regarding the panel, just fire it off to there and I'll respond to it as best as I can. I also set up an IRC channel, #touhoupanel on Rizon for peole to help contribute.

I know a lot of you are going to be hesistant to help or contribute to this, but I'll be going ahead with this no matter what so there are pretty much two ways to go about this. We can either all work together to create something that a majority of us can approve on, or we can show something that could wind up being another Otacon panel and no one wants that.

I don't know about the rest of /jp/, but I approve. Sadly I can't really help, since I just got into Touhou over the summer, but I wish you the best of luck in putting together this panel and making informed and semi-intelligent (or at least non-Gaiafucker) Touhou fans.

P.S. Draw in the crowds with hot pictures of the main Touhou girls!

You'd think that'd be enough but that'd require everyone to have an actual level of competence. This is the western fan base we're talking about. It pains me time and time again to see some of the things one would assume requiring very basic levels of common sense and then fail at it.

It might do good, but for every awesome fan you make, 100 stupid ones will also be made with deviantarts that are filled to the brim with IKEA porn, self-insertions and high-school AUs. You won't ever be able stop it, either.

You can easily help. All I really want out of Anon is for them to go over it every so often to see what they think of the presentation and what can be done to improve it and such.
>>1834804
I couldn't care less about my ego, especially in this situation. Touhou is something I love, and I'd prefer to not do something to harm it. I view the proper education of its potential fan base as being a good thing because the last thing we need is a wave of gaia level people, especially with the anime freshly out and depending on who/how many people release a sub for it.

>> No.1834819

You are a horrible fucking person.

Here's what people need to be taught about Touhou: It sucks, stay away from it. Also never use the internet. Or at least never go beyond AOL chatrooms or something.

>> No.1834826

Naturally, we at /jp/ do not wish for the fanbase to grow larger, even if they are "educated", a thing that is practically impossible. The only thing I request is that if you do go through with it, don't fucking mention /jp/. Show them pooshlmer or something.

>> No.1834827

I approve of what you are trying to do, OP. I recommend talking about the fan culture AFTER talking about the art and music of the official games, though.

>> No.1834836

Either they could find touhou through this or they could find it though the shrinemaiden forums.

I hate yukkuris and will probably leave those wretched creatures as something for them to discover on their own. If I can't present something unbaised, I won't bring it up.

I might also be completely underestimating what the average anime fan in the US is like due to being Canadian and having had the luck of primarily encountering solid competent people when I went to it. If that's the case, oh well. I'll just have to try that much harder.

>> No.1834842

No, no. Even pooshlmer is too close to /jp/. Look how many pooshlmer fags we get here. Send them to like, animesuki or something. Some registration forum with minimal knowledge of and nothing but contempt for 4chan. The degree of separation needs to be as large as physically possible.

>I view the proper education of its potential fan base as being a good thing because the last thing we need is a wave of gaia level people, especially with the anime freshly out and depending on who/how many people release a sub for it.

No.

The main thing you'll do by holding this panel is spawn more of the 'Gaia level people' you seem to despise. Also, no one but those who already know about Touhou is going to watch the anime; you seem to forget that most people don't watch an anime series unless they've heard about it.

TL;DR - You're only going to make it worse. The positive effects of this panel are going to be severely outweighed by the negative. Don't do it.

>> No.1834856

While I support your idea in theory, I have severe doubts as to how well it would actually work in reality. Still, I say go for it. I mean, whats the worst that could possibly happen?

A Gaian is not marked by their level of knowledge, they're marked by their personality. A faggot will be a faggot even if he can name every Touhou character, Digimon, and Pokemon. It's better to let those that will be idiots wallow in ignorance so we can more easily separate them from actual fans instead of having them go around saying "HURF DURF I'VE ONE SEE SEE'D EVERY GAME SO DON'T ACT LIKE I DON'T KNOW ABOUT TOE-HOE!".

And, as I've said before, you just want something to do, complete, and feel good about. Nobody asked for a Touhou panel. Nobody wants even, whether they already know about Touhou or not. People who know about Touhou are telling you not to do it, and people who don't know about it aren't begging for education. You're doing something with no provocation and no reason just so you can say that you've helped out the fandom when in actuality nobody has asked for nor desires your help. That's prety egotistical in my opinion.

Do what you want, but if I were you I would just get a hobby or something if you're that bored that you have to interject yourself where nobody asked you to.

And enjoy all the fan rage.

Why a keyboard? An arcade joystick & buttons are superior. A keyboard just doesn't feel right for this type of game.
