This entire first panel has left me a confused mess. Especially why he would say it would be good for him to be startled/threatened and the usage of なり. For context, the 不良 he's talking about said "面貸せ" about the game system he was using so she could play with him. The delinquent ended up kicking the guy's ass after, so to make up for it the delinquent asked the guy to punch her back.
I'd appreciate any help.

if you don't mind missing out on anki compatibility and various other features, you can use rikaichamp (a rikaikun fork). the only working add-on with all the features that rikaisama had is yomichan, but it has a very different feel to rikaisama so a lot of people dislike it.

I'm reaching the end of Wanikani level 3. I actually like some of the mnemonics and they've helped me. Does the quality of the course change at all once you're past the free trial? Is it worth buying a year, assuming I'll actually use it for a year.

I second this. Wanikani is good for learning kanji and vocab, but at the end of the day, it's a dumbed down, slower SRS system compared to anki.

You're better off learning kanji in RTK order or KLC order or JLPT order or whatever you want, and learning vocab with sentence cards in Anki.

Anki is cross-platform, mobile friendly, has a fuck ton of addons (especially for japanese), allows you to insert audio and images, have coloured text (which is great for pitch accent) and just in general, do more than wanikani.

The only thing Wanikani has over Anki is that it looks nice, but you can customise the fuck out of your Anki cards with HTML + CSS if you can be bothered.

Wanikani will work fine, but it'll be slow and cost money that you could better spend on manga and light novels (once you can read them).

Yes. It's not an alternative, at least for that fourth case. But if you're not explicitly testing yourself on pitch accent to begin with, grouping words with the same pitch accent pattern naturally from exposure to the color is essentially free. It's not something I'm currently doing, but it's a reasonable idea I've seen before and I may try it out in the future.

I read this post and I want to start using anki because as far as I'm concerned it seems that anything worth reading in japanese exclusively uses 常用外 kanji that I don't remember ever seeing.

So I downloaded anki and I am making my first card, but I'm wondering what's the optimal way to go about it. I don't really care about formatting, so my basic functional idea is like this:

You're training yourself to recall what is on the back of the card based on what is on the front of the card. When you're reading, you need to recall the reading and definition by seeing the word. So, word on front, meaning and definition on back.

You want the meaning of the word on the back as well, otherwise there's no point.

If your vocabulary and ability level permits it, then you can use J-J definitions if you like, but J-E definitions are more convenient for this purpose due to their conciseness (if you use J-E definitions, I recommend only copying up to 3 words from the definition onto your cards, since remembering more than that starts to get quite difficult - the simpler the card, the better).

I finally started learning Japanese this year and was making really solid progress but I'm afraid I've hit a wall. The past couple days I haven't been able to score above 30% on my reps and new cards just aren't sticking. Do I need to pivot and start reading? Just for some context I'm using the Kodansha book for individual kanji and am learning words using the memrise JLPT vocab decks. I'm learning both the readings and the definitions.

I still use numbers on my flash cards for the pitch accent of words, but within the sentence for the word I'm studying, I'll highlight each word with a colour corresponding to its pitch accent. This is to serve as a reminder for the pitch accent for all the words in the sentence, not just the word that I'm learning in that sentence.

For everything except 中高, the colour can correspond directly to pitch accent pattern.

For 中高, the colour can't tell you exactly how it's said, but the purpose of the colours isn't to tell you the pitch accent, it's to remember the pitch accent. Rather than remembering that a word is a [1] or a [2] for example, I remember the colour, as in general, humans have better visual memory, at least compared to just memorising a number.

Also, for most 中高 words you can guess the pitch accent pretty easily e.g., most i-adjectives have the downstep before the last い, most 3-morae verbs are [2], noun compounds have rules about them as well.

Here's an example sentence card of mine, note how I only have the colours on the back, not the front.

I like J-J definitions because they are interesting to read. I'm good with reading those from Daijisen so I will try sticking with that. At some point I will calm down and it will no longer matter to me whether I'm seeing Japanese or English because I'll safely know that I am proficient at Japanese, but for now I want to encounter as much Japanese as I can.

I would recommend grinding through taekim as fast as possible, notetake for the first run and stuff to help it stick a bit better.

As you learn words, write their kanji a few times, kodansha will *probably* help, however as it is now it might be awhile. I've never used it, so I can't speak for it, others use it right.

Reading through Yotsuba as the other anon will do two things very usefully: reinforce a lot of grammar and syntax rules, offer you insight into colloquial japanese as it's spoken and give you a really good chunk of vocabulary to start off with.

When it comes to doing your reps, I recommend reviewing them before doing it, maybe multiple times a day. Just go through the last couple days worth before flashcard review as a quick refresher and then maybe do it before bed so you can sleep on the reviewed info, you don't need to flashcard them outside of reps, just take their info in again. If this doesn't work out, maybe someone else can pitch in what worked for them later.

Reading also does help with context a lot, though it doesn't help as much as it seems to be made out to be either. Supplementary anything is good though and when you can recall a panel or something it was used in and how, that would be when its working exactly as intended.

It's not. The textbook/instruction phase is very short in the grand scheme of things... or it should be, but with classes what should take 2 weeks takes several months, and also costs you a lot of money.

Just get through your beginner guide at whatever pace you can manage, then it's time to start reading native material which is of interest to you. No matter what you do, when you first start reading you're going to have quite a tough time, but you've just got to tough it out with the knowledge that you will improve and it will get easier if you keep it up. The only way to fail is to give up.

This is the problem though. I can ignore it if I don't consciously understand the lyrics, but if I understand the bland shit they're saying it makes me hate it, like I hate generic English songs. Sorry if I was vague in my writing, I don't have a "goal" as in, I don't have a person or a program telling me the milestones that I should be achieving. I'm not sure if what I'm doing is okay.

I feel like I'm making progress. The most annoying thing to me is when I run into words that are written in hiragana and I have to parse if they're a grammatical feature or not.

From there onwards, progress markers are hard to come by really. It's pretty hard to measure your ability and determine exactly how much you've improved within X timeframe. It's not like a video game where you accumulate XP and level up; you just sort of realize every so often that you're better than you were a few months ago. All you can really do is to have confidence that what you're doing is working (after a few months of reading, this should become apparent) and that eventually you will reach the destination you're aiming for so long as you stay on course. In other words, "have faith".

Look up a definition of the word in a japanese dictionary and paste that onto the back of your card. If you don't know what it means with the japanese definition, look it up once in whatever language you want and memorize it the day that you add it to your Anki cue. If you forget the meaning, you'll need to look it up again; you can do this after you've done all your reps by browsing the "again today" set.

Stop doing this. While it's not a wrong translation, there isn't a single thing in "I don't think that's a good idea" that can be matched 1:1 to that phrase (except "that"). Don't assume you're correct just because you reached the same misunderstanding that the scanlator did, and don't assume you're incorrect when there's a completely unrelated reason the scanlator wrote something else.

I think he was saying that the assumption that the word "idea" matches up with something in the Japanese is just wrong. It's not the English translation that is the issue.

A literal translation of やめといた方がいい might be "it would be better if you stopped" but that wouldn't necessarily be the best way to render it in English. Depending on context "that's not a good idea" might be fine.

That's really average. Some people here actually really do 2 hours of Anki.
If you don't mind you can reduce steps, though that may hurt your retention, not that it really matters in the long run or anything. You can also just try to review faster. I can generally hit below 20 minutes if I go fast but I can't say if that is a harmful way to review. I've actually disabled new cards for a couple days because I got other stuff to do and it seems even 15 minutes is doable, so you might just want to consider taking a break from new cards. I certainly know that for me younger cards accumulate slightly faster than I get net mature cards, though that may be different for you.

Kanji have meanings, just not definitions. It does try, but I feel like it's not quite good enough. Then again, specifying the nuances between the on'yomi and kun'yomi for every single kanji would be absolutely draining, so I'm glad it doesn't go all out.

But, my font of choice is mplus.

A small problem I have with it is that it can sometimes look too clean and perfect in a limited way, and therefore boring, but this visual feeling is very Japanese, I think.

A bigger problem is that I'm not sure that this font has kanji like 慫慂 at all, so they look different and stand out, but I'm not good enough to regularly read things that prominently feature such kanji.

English is closer to Japanese than my mother tongue, so that helps a lot. Words taken directly from English are easier to remember if it's not your first time seeing them.
Knowing more than one language (any language at all) generally makes it easier to learn a new one, I think.

Frog reporting in, I'd say I'm having an easier time learning Japanese than I had learning English. Mostly because I'm self taught and I kind of know by now what works and what doesn't.
Also this might be a controversial opinion but I found re-learning everything from scratch to be easier than having to switch from French to English and vice versa.

But yeah, having the experience of learning a language definitely makes learning others much easier.

What makes for me English closer to Japanese than russian, is that while both languages, english and japanese, are practically nothing alike, they yet are both very light on grammar (particularly nominal morphology), and with russian not being especially close to japanese in anything, compared with english it seems especially distant from japanese; russian thrives on what exists neither in english nor in japanese. I think I would have a bad time learning japanese if I did not speak English.

No, he actually said he was working towards 2級, of the old JLPT, before the moved to the "N" levels, i.e. he was N4 level. Sometime last year he posted his JCAT score, which placed him at N4, but below N3 level, so he made absolutely no progress in all those years.

-do Core6k
-mine vocab (he suggested sub2srs from japanese dramas, but I didn't like that and mined from VNs instead)
3 1/2 years later I passed N1.
Meanwhile, he "optimized" and rewrote his guide a few times, without ever actually bothering to learn japanese.

Whatever you do, don't be like that guy and you will learn japanese eventually, even if you don't do it the most optimal way (people here really seem to hate RTK).
Spend all of your life trying to find the perfect method and you'll never progress past the beginner level, because that method just doesn't exist.

- Grammar: It largely doesn't matter what you use as long as you don't get hung up on it. I used a program called Human Japanese, and while I did enjoy it and think it did an alright job, I found DJT afterwards and realized I could have just saved my $20. I used Tae Kim from then on instead of buying the "Intermediate" Human Japnese for another $20.
- Anki(Core 2k/6k, and now I'm on 10k)
Every. Day. This was the biggest thing I put time into. On days that I had big exams or was just feeling really out of it, I turned off new cards, but you have to keep in mind that every time you do that you're stuck Even when I went camping back in August, I brought a power bank with me and my phone and got up before everyone else and did my reps in the freezing cold before dawn. That was the fastest I've ever gotten them done, I think it was like 21 minutes for 300-some cards.
- I read a decent amount of manga and stuff for the first 7 or 8 months. I read all of Yotsubato, all of Azumanga Daioh, and a bunch of various others that I don't care to try and remember now. I've kinda fallen away from that recently because I've struggled to find a new manga that's both a good difficulty level for me and interesting to me, but I really should get back into it.
- I read some of Flyable Heart, didn't quite finish a route but I plan to. I don't have a whole lot of time to spend on my Windows machine, I'm normally on the go with my Antergos laptop and I don't even want to try to play VNs, let alone set up text hooking in Linux.
- Lately I've been watching anime with Japanese subtitles, I watched all of K-On in preparation for the N2, currently watching 中二病ども恋がしたい.
- I used one of the N2 読解 study books in the cornucopia for a while.
- Soon I hope to get more into ドラマ, I've only seen Samurai Gourmet but I hung out with a Japanese friend of mine earlier today and got some recommendations from him, so I'm looking forward to doing that.

I'm now doing the Core10k deck. I'm also mining words here and there, but I haven't actually studied the mining deck yet, mostly because I just want to finish Core10k before I do so. Also whenever I mine a word I have to go in and check whether it's in Core10k or not and that's a pain so I'm not very good about mining words in general. I'll do it properly once I finish this deck.
The only reason I'm doing 10k is because the mindless grind of premade decks is easier to stay disciplined about than having to go out and find content and new words to make cards from, I worry that I wouldn't be disciplined enough to read all the time and make cards.

Studying Japanese is stressing me out and I don't know what to do about it. I haven't studied Japanese for about 6 months now. Everytime I want to start I get stressed out: it's as if I'm choking.

I've studied Japanese for 2.5 years almost every day and today I found out I barely passed my JLPT N5 so I decided to pick up learning Japanese again. However when I read about others who passed their N5 after a couple of months of study it feels like I'm choking! heres a very simple yet efficient course to learn japanese from scratch without overstressing about anything :

Do genki (+ its official workbook) ; N5.

then genki 2 (+ its official workbook) ; N4.

then tobira (+ its official kanji workbook + its official grammar workbook, you can take the teacher guide if you want translation of the readings and grammar sentences, i did and didnt regret it) ; N3/ dips in N2.

then new authentic japanese (+ its official audio course book + its official reading workbook called Rapid reading japanese + its ''kinda'' official kanji course named Kanji in Context) ;N2 / dips in N1

then 4 of the shin kanzen master n1 (grammar book, audio book, reading book, vocabulary book. kanji book is not necessary and you can skip it since KIC teaches you all the 2136 kanjis in a much better way) ; full N1

this is all you need. They are all full integrated courses, you dont need anything else (no rtk, no wanikani, nothing) and you will be able to stop stressing over which material to add, what to do and so on since you just have to do exactly what they tell you to do and in this in this order without overthinking anything. with this ''course'' you'll end up with more than 10 000 vocab, the 2136 kanji and almost all the grammar from N5 to N1 in a very smooth way (they all kinda follow each other), which means you'll be close or at a N1 level and probably able to enjoy pretty much any native material.

If you really want extra material, you could take the Dictionnary of japanese grammar series because they are really good, but they are very ''on the side'', not meant as a traditional learning ressource l and in the end you do not need them at all.

最近あまりにも漢字が書けなくなったので対策を考えてみた

昨日、Eテレの2355という5分番組で、トビハゼのトビーが言ってました。

『"おばあちゃん"を漢字で書ける人はおおいけど、"おじいちゃん"を漢字で書ける人は意外と少ない』と。

…私はおばあちゃんも書けなかった！

ほんとうに最近、漢字が書けなくなりました。今は漢字を読めさえすれば、スマホやパソコンで変換できちゃうし、手書きで文字を書くことが減ってきているからだと思います。

そんな私も、パソコンを使い出す前はもちろん漢字が書けました。幼稚園から10年以上書道教室にも通っていたので、それなりに漢字は書いてきたつもりです。

それにしても、「おばあちゃん」が書けないのは、さすがに大人としてちょっとヤバい！ヤバいレベルまできてしまった！

そこで、手軽に漢字の学習ができないか考えてみます。手軽といっても、手で書かなきゃダメなので、なるべく手書きを増やす方法です。

ちなみに、「おばあちゃん」はお婆ちゃん、「おじいちゃん」はお爺ちゃんです。

I've only trained myself to have good proportions and natural-looking strokes. I can't spell Japanese in kanji from memory, but with kanji in front of me, I can write anything correctly. I find my own handwriting pleasant, even though it's nothing special objectively.

What is your upload speed? Unless it is 3 kilobytes per second or less, it will not take even 1 day, let alone "days". With even a 25 kilobyte/second upload speed, it will finish uploading in under 3 hours.

And it's only a 1 time affair in any case. The reason there is 250MB of data to upload is due to all the media files in the Core deck, but once they're uploaded the amount of data you need to sync at the end of a session is so small as to be not worth mentioning.

Nah, it's just that easy. Pretty much anyone who can read decently standart novels can pass it with flying colors. If it would require any writing and speaking that's another story. But everything you actually need is comprehending text that you read (reading helps you with this), knowing reading (reading helps you with this) and answering grammar questions which are easy enough that you can answer them by heart (than again, reading helps you with this) or you could spend some time solely studying grammar for better points. I don't have much problem with kana but kanji-dense things bother me as I have to slow down to recall the reading. It's like, I want to fly through the text but then some stupid kanji that I haven't properly internalised for "rapid recall" trips me up. Many such kanji feel bad. The key is passive consumption, your attention span is limited. If its there great, if not, you still are linking the meaning and picking up on grammar. Much better than pausing and taking a picture to OCR it every five seconds.

I think you are right to want that.
For the purpose of studying consider looking up audiobooks to listen along with reading. I am doing that and loving it.

Or focus on VNs that are fully voiced or almost fully voiced.

Aozora has a section where they have books in epubs that are tied to the audio - you can just click on the word and it will start reading from that word and repeat as many times as you need.

You can also find some audiobooks by searching for 朗読 on youtube, niconico and torrents, there are dozens of read-alouds for popular public domain classics like Akutagawa Ryuunosuke and Natsume Souseki to be found that way.
I've listened to half a dozen different people read the same texts of 蜘蛛の糸 and トロッコ and I find that my listening comprehension grows much faster than reading comprehension (I have set up hotkeys in an audioplayer for 5 sec rewind and pause and I am playing the audiofiles along with reading the books)

Audible.jp even got 朗読 for some LNs

Just avoid AI朗読, at least I prefer to ignore them.

I have a guess - this is similar to our Backronym in concept.

Killlakill writers started with words [ぶった切ぎる モード] - then they sought a way to write it down all fancy-kanji like and picked somewhat related kanji whos on-yomis matched the desired pronunciation, the result was 武滾流猛怒.

Whoever was in charge of translating this shit to english is probably good enough at japanese to recognize words ぶった切ぎる モード by ear, no matter what they say in subtitles, and as such could figure out the intended meaning.

Yomichan browser-plugin works without internet since you download dictionaries for it, exists for chrome and firefox.

For VNs I find it convenient to use Hook Any Text to pump the text into the browser and use yomichan to translate unknown words there (there are some extra steps with making and configuring a special local autoscrolling page for that purpose but you can google that, works only in firefox).

Get any VN you think you won't get bored of reading - that's the primary condition for most of the learning media. If that is a VN you read before in english and wouldn't mind replaying in JP - that's a bonus, familiarity is good.

Anyway I've tried to learn Japanese 3 years ago. Finished the anki 6000 deck. learned around 1000 kanji and did the genki books.

However due to university creeping up on me I had to abandon all personal life and I neglected my Japanese severely.

The OCR tool recommended in the guide is KanjiTomo but it isn't flawless either. I've never heard of the program you're using so I can't say whether KanjiTomo is better or worse than it. It's free so you've nothing to lose by giving it a try.

Also don't underestimate how big of an edge you get over your peers by being fluent in Japanese. It's still the third largest economy in the world by GDP and the language has 200 million speakers worldwide. While the amount of fluent speakers in the west are scarce to say the least. I'd say the fluency in Japanese compensates for at least a couple of extra years of work experience related to the job.

A simple way for me is if you can somehow say its about someone/something else above the initial thing, then use が for the intial thing.

i.e. if you're talking about how a toaster is great, clearly you're thinking about how you think the toaster is great, so the toaster gets a が.
but if you're talking about yourself and your feelings toward something, there isn't something more important in that relationship than yourself, so you get a は.
