Can someone explain とてもじゃないが to me
The definition of it is "「とても 」を強めた語。" but why does ”じゃないが” strengthen it? Every time I see it my brain registers it as "it's not とても but..."

Is Mitsuboshi Colors a good manga to read as my first full on Japanese manga? I've seen it has furigana and everything, or is it recommended I start with Yotsuba?

"that the main character was the criminal" is the subject about which someone says something. "was the most interesting thing (among others, concerning the movie)" is a predicate (what someone says) about a complete sentence that states a fact. という is how you express such cases in japanese. removing という would produce something like "the main character being the criminal was the most interesting thing", i believe

In the game splatoon why do the japanese refer to ink as インク and not 墨? I asked someone else and they said that the kanji is only used to refer to calligraphy. I just think that is odd since in english we use the word ink to refer to the squid ink and the ink we use for writing. So does that mean that 墨 is only used for that way? But isnt there multiple meaning to a kanji depending on how it is read or am I getting that wrong?

Is it just another case of japan using random english words cause they think it sounds cooler?

2 and 3 mean completely different things.
1 and 4 are just 2 and 3 respectively but in transitive form (someone does the action to something).
5 is separate from the rest and is a noun instead of a verb.

When you say something like あなたの事が好きits obviously saying you like the person, but what's the actual difference between that and just あなたが好き? like what purpose does the の事 actually serve sine a literal translation doesn't make much sense either.

What are you doing? Is this vocab? Maybe you should put some time into kanji cards until you're better at paying attention to them in this case. If this is kanji cards you're doing something very wrong. Either way, maybe you should suspend some of the hardest cards, or actually put extra effort into those specific words. Anki isn't a learning method in itself, it is a supplement, and repetition wont always pull you through. There are a lot of different things you could do here, but you're going to need to explain more if you want actual advice instead of support of your decision to give up.

Does anyone else have a lot of trouble reading text that's only in kana? I get the impression that this is how kids learn it in Japan (since many video games like Pokémon are kana only) but holy shit is it confusing.

With kanji, once you've been doing core2/6k for a few months, even if you don't know how to pronounce a word or even know what exactly it means you can get a general idea of what a sentence is trying to convey. With kana this really isn't the case. I guess it works better if you hear a lot of spoken japanese?

Why doesn't the JLPT have a speaking and writing section?

I took an english proficiency test after school and they had you write a letter and put you in a room with four teachers and a photograph and you had to describe what came to mind. All on top of the usual grammar, reading and listening stuff.

Isn't the JLPT a bit too shallow? You could pass N1, get a job in Japan and get fired for not being able to communicate.

I also took a CEFR English exam and besides the standard listening and reading, I had to write several full fledged texts and have a varied conversation with another test taker as we were asked questions by the examiner. They have plenty of signs in English so you don't get lost. But I think the more you know the more you'll get out of your trip. So I'd say:
Learn the kana and (at least) basic kanji
Do the core deck
Learn grammar
Make sure you can pronounce what you're learning and can form/understand basic sentences. (How do you get to x, where's the bathroom, etc.)
You will probably not get a chance to have meaningful conversations with anyone there. You might find people willing to hang out with you if you go to a nightlife area and tag along with strangers at a bar or karaoke or something.

I'm unsure when I would say I first got there, but I'm 75% through TK (not practicing, just taking notes to refer to) and have 1200 vocab with 400 mature and am definitely at that point. I'm definitely still shit at reading, but I get sentences here and there.
I am doing KKLC on the side mostly because I wanted to, and can't comment on Heisig but I feel that kanji practice is helping my vocab go more smoothly. Just anecdote though. The usual advice seems to be, do it if you're struggling, you seem to be about deep enough to know if that's the case or not. After you get the really, really common shit that shows up in just about any medium, it's better to switch to mining and learn the words that show up commonly in the particular medium you read the most, and in the particular works you're reading. Another thing that helps my retention is always going on https://core6000.neocities.org/ and reading through the last 60 words (3 days), 2 times a day BEFORE doing my reps. Also, on the second revision pass, I simply read the next 20 new words which Anki is supposed to give me on that day. I've had solid over 90% retention ever since I started doing that, and it saved me the time of possibly having to write all that shit down in order to memorize it better.

Where do you break off when reading LNs?

There's no way I can read a 70+ page chapter in one sitting. Takes me long enough just to get through 5 pages.

Transitive = You do the action.
Intransitive = Something else does the action. In most cases that something is omitted because it's not important who does the action, only that it's not you that does it. Or the entity that does the action is something without form like god or time or whatever.

剥がす - I peel something off
剥げる - Something peels off on it's own

塞ぐ - I close up something.
塞がる - Something closes up on it's own.

治す - I heal something.
治る - Something heals by itself.

Most dictionaries would put it as "to heal" and "to be healed", but this is misleading. Sometimes they use the "to be" form on transitivie verbs like 役に立つ (to be useful) and sometimes they don't use it on intransitive ones like 剥げる (to come off).
Just something to keep in mind while mining cards.

Sorry, that's actually intransitive.

But they translate 立つ and 立てる with "to stand" and "to stand up" which can be even more confusing. Just remember to make sure what is and isn't transitive before mining or you'll make a silly mistake like me.
