This collection of foreign Western devils in a retro Japanese setting was a novel idea.
The right amount of grey for edgefags with characters like Sakuya and Flandre to sperg over.
Vampires are endearlingly popular.
Iconic leitmotifs.
EoSD and Touhou as a whole at the time didn't force feed a lot of information and backstory, just the bare essentials. They had intrigue.
This allowed EoSD characters to be anything the fans wanted, inviting speculation about them and how they came together. "Is Sakuya a vampire hunter? An orphan? Meiling a dragon? Why the fuck not?"

I really miss the days when half the things you knew about Gensokyo were invented by fans because ZUN simply hadn't bothered filling in most of the setting. You could find anything that was forgotten somewhere in Gensokyo and project all the stupid metaphysics on it you wanted.
