So, I've been playing Muramasa lately and I've been thinking about possible castings for a live-action movie or TV series. I haven't really thought of much, but when I was playing the game I really couldn't get the thought out of my head that Steve Buscemi would make a great Sorimachi, and I started to imagine Steve Buscemi being Sorimachi each time I started to play Muramasa. Other than that, I think Christian Bale could be a nice Kageaki. For Ichijou, idk, maybe the chick from Stranger Things? No clue about Kanae, maybe Natalie Dormer?

Finding the story a bit weak, if you will excuse me. Azami being taken by the dick, and the policewoman becoming (literally) a dog of the yakuza (stopped reading there for today). It was too much 'on your face, just because'.
I expected more interesting character development and a thrilling story, not only flashy violence and gore.
Does it get better?

Most eroge are just ADV game + ero. You can tell a lot of makers add it in as an afterthought so their games will sell on PC (all ages does not sell well unless you're an established brand). So many games stand on their own without ero, if they were really meant to be eroge they'd weave it in with the narrative and make it an integral part of the game.

This. The only games in which I really like the ero is dark stuff by companies like Elf or Black Cyc. In 95%+ of non-nukige it's just the same standard vanilla routine and usually just drags the game down by killing pacing or introducing romance subplots without any real substance.

While that might be true, you can't really tell until you read it. Some of the best character moments I've ever read have been part of H-scenes. A good author will build the relationship between the characters as they make love.
Whenever I meet someone who skips H-scenes or reads an all-ages version of a VN, I think of all the awesome moments I would've missed over the years if I did the same thing and cringe a little.

Personally, I avoid all ages VNs. It's not that I have a super strong attachment to the sex; it's that it's almost like a spoiler. If the VN is dark and all ages, I know nobody is going to raped or mutilated and so it takes off all the edge. I spent an hour thinking before every choice in Saya no Uta because I knew that there would be horrible, horrible consequences if I made the wrong decision. You don't get that experience with an all ages VN.
On the other hand, if it's a pure love VN, then it means one of two things. Either the relationship is never consummated, which is lame, or it is, but it fades to black, which just makes me feel super left out.

No. Not in Japan. Not here. One can argue about the quality, though I've seen mostly negative opinions about it from western VN players for what it's worth. But it sure wasn't popular. Sold like shit as well, as far as I remember. Nobody giving a shit about its fandisc now is a good sign for that as well.

Actually, Istoria probably wasn't popular either. Amayui was, of course. There are also a few others that that list misses, but it's like whatever. (i.e. Noratoto 2) Not like the list was supposed to be complete. If you read the post again you'll spot:

Well number of posts isn't exactly a good measure of seeing what we liked. You listed Omokage, but almost every post was being disappointed in it and wondering what the hell went wrong. ChronoBox was very divisive with a lot of people hating it. Aoi Tori turned out to be much weaker than Amatsutsumi, and so on. If you want to look back on the year, EGS is generally reliable to see what games were a hot topic, "our" taste isn't notably different.

I think a picture chart like that using EGS as the base would be a good idea, actually. Seeing all the big games on a glance would be handy for backlog and recommendation purposes. If you sort by 100+ votes I believe every month has one game at least, though there are some games below that probably deserve to be on there like Silverio Trinity or Re;Lord 3. Maybe as a honorable mention kind of thing.

Very infuriated with the cliffhanger from the first episode. Also expected a lot more action, but it was mostly based around the girl romance plus a lot of infodump.
But from the whole cast, the sister is the only one who caught my attention. The rest of girls were so boring. So even if the next episode is another cliffhanger without resolution, it might be bearable as long as it centers a bit around her character. Honestly, at this point the only truly interesting girl is the possible villain (or unknown hero?) revealed at the end of the 1st episode.

EGS is one thing, but all I remember about that game was how people didn't exactly like how it tried to combine serious storytelling with utterly absurd juvenile comedy. One of the two is fine, but it mixes horribly. And I have to agree.

What I kinda heard is that it gets better. Maybe it does. But it was REALLY fucking retarded in quite a few ways to the point, I've only gotten past the first actual ero scene of it and even that already included a good amount of skimming here and there. Although I did actually enjoy the first few hours. It just went downhill once they went to that "world" I guess. Not like there weren't problems before that, but they were more technical writing related than story related. (i.e. how present characters are conveniently ignored if the writer didn't want their input in a scene no matter how little sense that may make)

It's polarizing for sure. Though I really don't think I've seen a single really positive comment about it from someone who finished it here. HAS someone finished it here?

The games comments are overwhelmingly positive and most people would argue the combination was done very well. Even Scaji liked it a lot. It's easy to see why it wouldn't be up to someones taste but that isn't the games fault and more of a preference thing. It has the most votes and second highest rating of the year for a reason (if Kamisama no Game had a similar amount of votes it would probably drop below it too).

I can think of exactly two mothers in moege

Iris in Yomegami and Shikiko in Nekonade Distortion. Yeah, I understand there's fucktons of mothers in nukige but I don't want to play nukige. I want to play moege. Why are moms so unpopular in moege?

Probably because of the whole purity thing that's so important in moege, so you need to either take a gamble and hope your readers don't care or try and stretch their disbelief super hard either with a fantastical setting/premise or things like "she adopted her dead sibling's child and never married or dated anyone ever!" type stuff.

But in general "older" woman type heroines like teachers or OLs etc are getting rarer in moege so it's only natural something that's a step beyond that is even rarer.

Finished reading 暗い日曜日 - Sombre Dimanche. It was short, and I ended up liking it. Reading something like this makes you wonder how the author came up with the story, what with all the (slight spoilers) confusion with what is and isn't reality and what's the deal with the MC's mental state+the rain

ending thoughts: Saddest ending was the 許さない one (#19). Not sure what the fuck was wrong with the MC's head in the 2-1=2 ending (#16). Regarding the true and happy endings, I'm getting mixed messages about what the actual true ending is. It feels like the happy end should be it, especially since there's apparently a sequel that should stem from that. But you could also say that all endings are canon or that it's up to the reader to interpret it. Or you could argue that what the author says is the true ending is word of god. I guess I'm fine without an answer to that.

There are really rare cases where it works. But it tends to need compatible characters with that as well. Wall-kun mcs don't work. Too "idealized" super pure girls don't work. In fact, the girl needs to have fun during sex, which is insanely rare in the first place.

Yeah, as always you need a good writer to pull that off. One that realizes intimacy can be a good vehicle to bring the characters together, that there should be more than just MC jackhammering away while they're both cumming for the 20th time, that there can be slightly awkward parts during sex while each other is both trying to figure out how to please the other, and so on. But that takes effort so I won't hold my breath. That's why I don't care too much about H-scenes anymore, I'd rather just close my eyes and imagine a better one.

It isn't all that rare in less recent games. All makura games have them, and I pretty sure I remember playing other things from before 2010 that used them.
My guess is that most companies don't have their artists draw them because depending on what you're trying to go for, you can get essentially the same effect by either not showing a sprite or only briefly showing it on its own, so it's a simple way to cut costs.
I'm pretty sure minori still uses them, but I don't have any of their games installed to check.

Played 2 of the routes in Kurayami 2.

So the series gimmick is that every route is supposed to be self-contained and has absolutely no connection with each other. If characters reappear they end up being like Tezuka's Star System but that hasn't really happened much yet.

The only thing that's supposed to be common to all stories is that you get trapped in a Subway when the train crashes mid-way somehow, which I kind of feel is a bit less powerful than being trapped in an elevator (the premise of the first Kurayami)

What's a bit iffy is that even within its own route, the Bad End paths can go off into wildly different directions and contradict things that don't relate to what your choices are at all, so whenever you reach one you have to mentally scratch out parts of your memory so you can keep track of which information is actually valid to the True Ending of a path.

Also this game really makes me appreciate modern VN Engines because there's no manual saves and it only autosaves at very specific points and it's sometimes very arbitrary on whether that's before or after decision points. There's only a "Skip Everything" keyboard command instead of "Skip Read Text" so trying to exhaust all the possible routes is a pain in the ass.

Current Route thoughts

Akane - Detective (Noir) storyline - Akane is the daughter of his dead partner who got "silenced" by a corrupt politician along with his wife

Fairly solid, I thought, and most of the Bad Ends feel logically connected with the exception of one branch where answering a call suddenly reveals that your partner is alive and the villain, which is not the case in the canon branch.

What's funny to me is that most of the Bad Ends seem to revolve around whether Akane is your actual daughter or not (she's not in the canon version)

Nomu - I don't know how to classify this one - surreal Fairytale? The heroine is a doll that came to life seeking revenge on the MC (in a comedic sort of way) but that element seems quickly dropped in the canon branch and only really applies to one of the Bad Ends.

A lot of "blurring the lines between fantasy and reality" and it's hard to tell what's literal and metaphorical. Is the MC a doll too? Are the crowd of people going mad due to the stress of the situation literal rats?

Most of the Bad Ends are pretty abrupt and arbitrary, there's one where the story ends up being that MC was involved in a Hit & Run with the girl that owns the doll - I kinda feel like this route actually feels like it makes more of a "logical" flow than the main one because it doesn't drop the Heroine's initial motivation, but it isn't the ending that rolls the credits...

Finished Kiniro Labriiiichue (or whatever the fuck this is supposed to be...)
Short version: Skip. If you still wanna read it, skip the final route.

Presentation: Mostly good with a few hickups. The art is nicely done in 1080p, but rarely they play around with zooms, that look as horrible as you'd expect. There's also a lack of backgrounds, especially in the dorm. Given how much of a stage that place is, not being able to really know how the fuck that shit really looks like and works is... pretty bad. Voices are pretty nice and the music does its job.

Character interaction: The highlight of the VN and tends to not get boring. Characters work quite well, unlike what you see in so many other moege where it's easy to fall asleep. Part of that is probably the MC being fine himself as well, in addition to nothing getting focused on for too long.

Story: Very questionable, but not THAT present. To be honest, it's mostly not even that the story in itself is bad. The structure is. For example the story in Reina's route is totally fine. It just doesn't really include Reina and as such doesn't give her any room to grow, to shine or to do much at all. As such, while you can have fun in the route, in the end it's lacking. This problem is heavily present in the whole game: Characters really don't grow much or at all and, if anything, a switch is pressed to "change" something.
This can be more or less bad. In the normal routes it's.. okay. The princess' route is a little awkward, as she's too much of a typical mainheroine (think Kanon from Marshmallow) to make if feel worthwhile to go through all the "trouble" to get her as a girlfriend when there are much more charming girls around that are not important princesses. The side route was not needed, or should've been given to the other princess. But overall it's okay.
In the final route it's a big issue. This is, in theory, the heaviest and most serious route. However, again the writer just flipped switches and didn't really deal with the situation, the trouble and so on. Instead it was just ignored. This is really bad here, as this route is otherwise only taking things away. The story could've been great. And the overall concept is great. There are a few lines that were hitting home and were well done. But all of that took like a minute and was simply ignored afterwards. As a result you go out of this route having lost a lot of things, but not really having anything gained in return. A common "mistake" with these kinds of plots. That makes the route not really worth reading. I think the potential was there, for Ria to shine here. But just like in the other routes, with their respective heroines, she wasn't given the room to. In addition to that you can also argue, that this route is a little unfitting for a moege. But to be honest, Ria's plot should've been part of all routes. It feels really terrible that it wasn't. Probably part of why the final route didn't work too well either.

I'd like to do so as well, but for that the author would've actually needed to not just have that happen for the hell of it, but write the whole thing out. It's kinda amusing in a meta way. Ria hates stories where someone only dies for the hell of it. And she's in a story where she only dies for the hell of it.
I'm sure this wasn't what the writer tried to do, but... with pretty much everything concerning it being more or less getting ignored, rushed or just a switch being flipped, it's not really working. Especially because this year already had at least one much better example of a similar thing.

That said, it's a game that's fairly fun to read, just not satisfying in the end. It's probably the most fun game I know that I have trouble recommending. I simply want to get something out of routes like that. To me death or permanent separation really needs to have some meaning for the story. How characters deal with it, be it before it hits or afterwards. Perhaps with something that gets left behind. A common thing for MCs dying is the heroine being pregnant. The other way around usually needs to have the girl in question trigger certain things. For example finding your way in life and dedicating a certain something to your lost love later on. But the characters aren't allowed to really deal with anything on screen. So it just feels empty and kinda pointless, to me at least. It's honestly not different in the rest of the game anyway, just that with minor drama it doesn't REALLY matter much. What little there is works. It's just so... little.

Finished Mamiko's route. The genre is... I think Action / Romcom?

Storyline: Mamiko and MC were a couple in high school, separated and had a chance meeting on a train (she became an office lady) - they get dragged into action movie hijinks when a middle-aged spy guy comes in and gives them a box while going "Quick bring this to safety while I keep the people chasing me busy!" and off they go.

There's like 3 branches for this scenario, one of which is decided really early on and is Bad End only but plays the credits for some reason. And then the other two is decided with a single choice down the road, and generally any bad endings you get tend to end the thread like 5 minutes later and make sense in the context of itself. The path branch decision points make absolutely no sense but at least it's not convoluted.

Mamiko speaks in Kansai-ben which makes things a bit harder for me because I'm not really exposed to it that much. I really like her bantz with the MC and I think the two Good Ending paths are decently developed though I assume the one with this CG is the "canon" one. Fairly enjoyable scenario to me.

Only have 2 heroines left to go - I did a quick skim but I got a feeling I might have to end this game on a low note by unintentionally picking the more enjoyable routes first, but maybe it'll surprise me.

It's just a guy who hates eroge doing stupid things just because. Keep things simple, don't write 2mb over something you can summarize in one sentence and so on. Nekopara does fit that. It's shit. But it's not 2mb bloated shit that acts as if it's more than a few dumb cats in a café.

And say what you want, I can agree with this point of view. To me, a lot of eroge have a beginning that's so fucking cringe because the authors think they need to do something fancy and explain their dumb as fuck settings. Which they don't need to and tend to fail heavily at anyway. Once that's done and forgotten, it's getting to the core of the game which can obviously still be shit, but also pretty nice.

Take something like this month's Kiniro whatever. The game isn't terrible, has a solid/entertaining cast for the most part and so on. Yeah some problems with the plot later on, but whatever. However, the beginning is utterly horrible and retarded. Mostly because the author tries to explain why the utterly impossible and stupid setting can exist like that. And failed hard, as the whole thing crumbles the moment a random dude is somehow faster than trained bodyguards, while carrying a fucking girl no less, anyway. Which is in the first 5 minutes. Trying to be all like "this could've really happened!" doesn't exactly work after that. Once things are established, it's fine. But why the fuck was all of that even necessary? And there are even more extreme cases than this. I learned to ignore beginnings when I try out eroge.

As for bloat.. it's generally agreed here how much of an issue that is for eroge. Don't think I need to say much about it. So, while the guy is certainly writing things a little... negatively, it's probably more to give some balance. One guy who's way more positive than he probably should be, and vice versa. Like it or not, I guess.

Just plain boring. I dropped it shortly after starting yuzuki's route. The two characters dont really have much in the way of personality besides being nice and caring. Besides the scenes that have individual CGs for them there isnt really much in the way of variety in a lot of the scenes. Pic related pretty much nailed it right on the head for me.

I've played them from Bullet to Bringer (not in order though) and Bullet which I found to be the weakest was at least super short and still had a pretty good atmosphere and gameplay.

Tried Sengoku Koihime X. I'll probably use it for when I want to play a soon to be released VN and it's not worth starting something else before. Seems episodic enough for that. It's also neither particularly great or bad, which makes it quite well suited for that I guess.

I was a bit worried about the length, but even that will probably not be an issue, seeing how long the "side" stories are, which are completely optional.

I've been playing Kakyuusei and I think it's a really nice game with an annoying system. The highlight of this game is probably the cast and character interactions. Overall, I think Kakyuusei has my favorite cast even when compared to both the Doukyuusei games. They're all pretty fun and it's quite cute and interesting to see how the heroines reactions to you change as time changes and your relationship develops with them. However, the system is really fucking annoying. I get what they were going for with having to play through the entire year instead of just a couple of weeks with the Doukyuusei series, but it really kind of burns you out since it makes the game feel so LONG. I never really got the same thrill and overall fun from Kakyuusei that I did with Doukyuusei 2.

For my gripes about the system, they really did a lot of cool things with the full year playthroughs. I thought it was pretty cool how the characters clothes ended up changing with the season.

閉じたセカイのトリコロニー actually has a fair amount of choices. I might run out of save spots (although it only has 30 of them). Maybe it's not really that many choices but it sure feels like way more than most moege where you get like 1 or 2 aside from the 外／中出し ones.

It has it's funny moments and likeable characters. I might finish this.

I like the system more than Doukyuusei 2 honestly, since with that long time span I can play freely the way I want without having to follow a strict walkthrough and still able to get a girl. I will miss certain CGs, but the freedom of the dating sim system that Kakyuusei offers making the game better for me when playing blind than having to search for strict event flags in Doukyuusei.
Also fuck Doukyuusei diary limited save system.

Thanks just finished Yuumi's ending. They're so cute together and Märchen describes this chapter perfectly. H scene was also very fun to read through, especially with the Yuumi bullying.
