ITT we discuss and connect the mythology background to the Touhous.

Like Eirin is based of Shinto God of Wisdom Omoikane, etc.

Well, starting with the newbie, Okina is based on the god Matara-Jin, and Eternity is apparently based on a caterpillar cult-god.

Shinki is based on Lucifer (and the SMT version) or Satan, since makai still exists in windows canon it's probably something like abrahamic hell or an abrahamic portion of hell. Or hell varies depending on what you believe in.

Junko could've been Xuán Qi, one of the wifes of Hou Yi, the ancient archery hero and possibly fallen god.
Xuán Qí conspired against Hou Yi with Han Zhuo, his chancellor, to overthrow him because of the tyrannical rule he impossed. After they murdered him they used his flesh to cook a dinner for his sons, who refused to eat him and were also killed and displayed afterwards. Sometime after, Han Zhuo married Sable Fox, having two children with her.
The spicy things just start here. There is a lot of unknown or missing information about Junko. Her "true" name, species or even son are lost.
In-game, is stated than Junko refined herself into her own fury against not only Houyi, but also Chang'e, because he killed his son Bo Feng (gluttonous pig), not needing a reason to fulfill her revenge after her refinement. Her name is formed with the "Pure Fox" kanji, and according to CoLA, naming a thing basically weakens it's existance and gives it a new meaning. As I can see it, there are two paths for the origin of the current Junko: the original wife of Houyi who refined herself into fury or the pure fury of Xuán Qi who now stands on its own.
The "pure" side of Junko is explicit, she refines parts of things: It's her ability. The "fox" part is the problem: Is (was?) she a kitsune? One could argue Xuán Qi was a huli jing or fox spirit, the kitsune equivalent in chinese lore, who was forced to marry Houyi. As in japanese legends, huli jing could be both extremely benevolent or extremely malign. By going with the "Houyi was evil" hypothesis, it's assumed he purposely killed Bo Feng and Xuán Qi took revenge. But if she was a simple human with a fox in her name and the skill to purify things, then she just wanted to avenge his son, not caring about (literally) anything but that action. After getting refined and just being Xuán Qi in name, she gained the fox tails and became a divine spirit in the form of a pure fury.
Pure furies are known in greek mythology as Erinyes, were born of the simply fact of human revenge, from the blood of Uranus and from wrongly murdered or tortured women who wanted revenge. Erinyes are also relevant to Hecate, the multi-facetic goddess(?) of Hell, crossroads, sorcery, necromancy, night/moon and magic, among other things.
It's ironic and really sad than after all the time Junko wanted to revenge, she somehow befriended the only being who could ask to or directly retrieve her son's soul, and she doesn't care about it anymore.

Stacojiu family is one of the noble houses in Romania during the end of Vlad Draculea Tepes III's reign. At this time, Vlad is a master of Dark magic practitioner and a powerful one to boot. Vlad managed to cast a resurrection spell on himself as an assurance against his enemies. The other nobles fear him and betrayed him in the end after he insisted ruling for a long time and continuing his campaign against the Turkish. The head of Scatojiu is the one who proposed the betrayal and persuaded the other noble houses to join him. While sending him to the hand of executioner, Vlad cursed the Stacojius and promised that one day that he will get his vengeance. And he did... years later he was resurrected but not as a human, the spell had it's own price. Of course he became a powerful dark blood-drinker sorcerer and adopted the moniker Dracula. The Scatojiu family eventually were getting massacred on their castle. Somehow he spared Remi and Flan, the head's daughters, and turned them into Vampire as a final insult to the Stacojiu's bloodline. Then Dracula was never seen again. After the family's castle was destroyed, the sister moved to the safe house that was created by their father and hide in there, which later became SDM. But Dracula gave too much power to the young Flan and as a result, she became unstable, which prompted Remi to lock her in underground basement to keep her from going ballistic.

Patchouli is one of the Johannes Trithemius young apprentice in Alchemy. She gained occult and magic knowledge from his peers (Cornelius Agrippa and Paracelsus). Her father is one of the Scatojiu's librarian and also a magic practitioner. He authored many of magic and occult-related books and placed them in Scatojiu's safe house (which became SDM latter). She joined Sakuya in search of SDM to claim her father's legacy.

Sakuya - Born japanese, her birth was said as a blessing from kami Konohana Sakuya after her parents devotion to the goddess. But after a rebellion swoop down the area and her parents died because of it, she was kidnapped by Lunarian and brought to the moon. She became a test subject for time & space-related experiment, which later she developed her own power. Eirin is one of the Lunarian scientist that observed her progress. This experiment is illegal according to the Lunarian standards so those who worked in this must do this in absolute secrecy. When the experiment was compromised by the Lunarian authorities, the participants decided to cryo-freeze her and hide her. Hundred years later, the cryo-freeze capsule ceased functioning and woke Sakuya from her deep slumber. She escaped from the Moon & the Lunarians by using one of their vehicle and crashed on the Balkan region. She was found and adopted by Abraham van Helsing, whom then trained her to become a Vampire hunter. With her time power developed and she decided to train & hone it, she became an accomplished vampire hunter and was known to never fail on her task.

During one of he tasks to hunt a certain child vampires in Romania, she was aided by Patchouli. They founded the abandoned mansion and battled against Remi and Flan. Sakuya was defeated and submitted her loyalty to the Scarlet Devil, while Patchouli still managed to stand on her own and refused to submit, even tough her illness returned on the mid of battle. Remi decided to give a new name for Sakuya, which is what we are calling her now. Patchouli was given permission from Remi to claim her library and stayed here, since she knew her father is one of Patchouli's father's friend.

Gensokyo is nothing but supernatural environmental experiment for a certain organization in Outside World called the Secret Sealing Club. It was found by Sumireko and popularized by Renko and Maribel throughout the centuries. Maribel offered herself to become the test subject of the experiment by exposing herself to Gensokyo's boundary and become it's Watcher, resulting her conversion into Yokai. The Dragon God is a machine-like being invented by the organization to create this illusion land in the beginning.

This experiment is called Touhou Project

Yukari is based on an obscure youkai called Waremehime (Princess of Cracks).
It resides in the cracks of walls or rocks, and lures victims close with her voice, before swallowing them whole.

This is more of a speculation, but Satori and Koishi are probably named by Satori herself, after Koishi sealed her heart away. Satori just uses the name of the species for herself, and calls Koishi, literally a pebble, because you wouldn't notice passing by a pebble on the road.

Yeah. This is gonna be complicated to elaborate so bear with me.

In Kojiki, Eirin/Omoikane is related to Toyotamahime/Toyohime and Tamayorihime/Yorihime because Toyohime's husband is actually her grand nephew.

Eirin/Omoikane's sister, Yorozuhatahime, married Amaterasu's son, Ame no Oshihomimi, and gave birth to Ninigi.

Then Ninigi married Konohana-sakuya, gave birth to male triplets.

The eldest son, Hoori, married to Toyotamahime/Toyohime.

Hoori and Toyotamahime/Toyohime's son, Ugayafukiaezu, married Tamayorihime/Yorihime.

Kisshōten (吉祥天) and Kokuanten (黒闇天) - The original Goddess Fortune/Blessing and Misfortune/Disaster. Both sisters are mother figure of Jo'on and Shion respectively. Tired of of their daughters always messing around, they told them to take a vacation in Gensokyo and attend Primsriver + Raiko concert. Little did they know, that their daughters already hatched a plan for having their own fun in Gensokyo.

Personal conspiracy theory: Sagume is the goddess who convinced Houyi to shoot Junko's kid. Sagume is based partly on the goddess Amanosagume, who orders a divine pheasant to be killed in the Kojiki, and it's easy to transition from "hey Amanowakahiko, why don't you go shoot this divine messenger bird?" to "hey Houyi, why don't you go shoot this other divine messenger bird?"

Second layer of conspiracy: this was such a major sin that it turned the whole universe against her, resulting in her "ability" and status as the proto-amanojaku.

Third layer of conspiracy: that event made Sagume into the goddess of shooting shit you really shouldn't have, so she later had a hand in the mistletoe spear that did in Baldr and the assassination of JFK. This is also the reason she was easily able to convince the protagonists to go shoot down Junko.

Tenshi's titles are Girl of the Sphere of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception (SWR) and
Young Mistress of Bhavāgra (DS). Both refer to the highest sphere of the Formless Realm (Ārūpyadhātu), that realm being the highest of the heavens of Devas(gods) (higher that Form Realms, which are higher than Desire Realms ). It's called Formless because entities that exist in that realm have no physical form at all, so gods of the Formless Realm do not have any location in space (nor do the heavens they inhabit).

Tenshi, though, obviously has a form, so it's mostly a joke by ZUN, Her appearance is based on a Deva of the Desire realm, most likely the Heaven of Thirty Three, or something of that order.

That could be a funny explanation of why we only see Tenshi in Gensokyo, and not any other Celestials (though in SWR ending we actually see Tenshi's servants, presumably lesser Devas), but I don' t think it works this way. ZUN probably just liked the ideas of "Highest Heaven" and "Neither Perception not Non-Percention", but otherwise modelled Tenshi on the kind of Deva that would actually interact with the surface world.

In Buddhist lore devas of the formless realms are not enlightened beings.

>>18200474
According to A9,
>Celestials are hermits who have long pursued ascetic knowledge, but they can be divided into those who have achieved immortality and ascended to heaven, and those who have attained enlightenment and entered Nirvana after death.
>The former have physical bodies, so they can appear on earth with ease, but the latter cannot descend from Heaven without borrowing somebody's body.
Everything said here about the latter category is nonsense, but that aside, Tenshi's family history indicates that they are more like the former type in the first place (they haven't become Celestials thanks to ascetic practice, but have been "promoted" by gods). Nothing actually links Tenshi to formless realms aside from her title. I suggest that this is an effect of her chuuni side, similar to Remilia's chuuni side and wild claims.

>> No.18207928

From Buddhist perspective, no. Various levels of Heavens basically correspond to levels of meditative concentration (once you achieve a certain dhyana you have planted causes for rebirth in the corresponding heavenly realm). However, these practices are not exclusively Buddhist, non-Buddhists can reach those levels too.For example, Buddha's teacher (the yogi under whom he studied before he set out to achieve enlightenment on his own) reached the highest absorbtion and was reborn in Bhavagra. However he did not achieve enlightenment, because he did not prctive with correct motivation and view. So, once his (cosmic-tier) lifespan ends in that realm, he will be reborn somewhere else.

In other words, heavenly realms are still part of Samsara (conditioned existence), while Enlightenment and Nirvana mean cessation of Samsara.

I don't have access to sources right now and just mainly bringing the topic up for discussion, but I am quite sure that ZUN's version of Heaven (in Touhou) is an amalgamation of both Buddhist and Daoist concepts.

Celestials had been said to be another form of Hermits and both Kasen and Miko aimed to become one later on. This would make perfect sense if we not only see them as Devas but as also a form of Xian, which is why Tenshi is physical rather than formless.

I forgot what other arguments I had about the topic, but this is also concurrent with Tenshi's choice of literary and scriptural quotations in SWR.

Might be pretty obvious, but I think just how much the concept of ZUN's Celestials being influenced by Daoist beliefs isn't discussed that often.

Though I wonder for this part if I didn't just misread things and missed a Japanese or Buddhist folklore regarding peaches of longevity.

It solves quite a few of the inconsistencies regarding the state of Touhou's Heaven and its supposed state, however it does leaves some questions on where the line between the Buddhist concepts and Taoist concepts lies. >Xi Wangmu

>A goddess in Chinese religion and mythology, also worshipped in neighbouring Asian countries, and attested from ancient times. The first historical information on her can be traced back to oracle bone inscriptions of the fifteenth century BC that record sacrifices to a "Western Mother". Even though these inscriptions illustrate that she predates organized Taoism, she is most often associated with Taoism. From her name alone some of her most important characteristics are revealed: she is royal, female, and is associated with the west.

>The Queen Mother of the West usually is depicted holding court within her palace on the mythological Mount Kunlun, usually supposed to be in western China (a modern Mount Kunlun is named after this). Her palace is believed to be a perfect and complete paradise, where it was used as a meeting place for the deities and a cosmic pillar where communications between deities and humans were possible. At her palace she was surrounded by a female retinue of prominent goddesses and spiritual attendants. Although not definite there are many beliefs that her garden had a special orchard of longevity peaches which would ripen once every three thousand years, others believe though that her court on Mount Kunlun was nearby to the orchard of the Peaches of Immortality. No matter where the peaches were located, the Queen Mother of the West is widely known for serving peaches to her guests, which would then make them immortal. She normally wears a distinctive headdress with the Peaches of Immortality suspended from it.

Holy shit, if Touhou have the absolute final boss in the entire series, this woman might be a good candidate.

You're actually wrong, it's a common mistake. Tewi isn't talking about Daikokuten.

Lord Daikoku/Daikoku-sama is actually another name for 'Okuninushi' who is the god of medicine, nation building and business. It has more significance being he is famous for saving and healing the White Hare of Inaba (who Tewi is) from certain death. So what Tewi is saying is she is vouching for Daikoku from first hand experience.

The mistake here is understandable as Daikokuten and Okuninushi are pretty closely entwined but they are addressed differently and still different beings.

It's pretty much confirmed near the end by Yukari when talking to Toyohime since Okuninushi is pretty much the posterboy of the Kunitsukami who are the archenemies of the Amatsukami (The Lunarians) but were defeated and banished to the Earth.

So what Tewi is saying is she is vouching for Daikoku from first hand experience. As someone who knows both Omoikane (Eirin) and Okuninushi (Daikoku) she is qualified to say Eirin isn't all she is hyped up to be.

Hecatia would technically be comrade in arms with Amaterasu technically. Remember Junko hates the Lunarians for killing her son, Hecatia hates Lunarians because the shooting of the suns inadvertedly hurt her she is a reflection of the sun.

If you throw Amaterasu into the mix in Touhouverse the Lunarians just straight up tried to murder her in light of the previous setting.

Kiyohime is not associated with a Bridge, Hashihime is. Kiyohime is associated with Temple Bell and Dragon, and I don't see Parsee can morph into Dragon.

Kiyohime has a possibility of being one of the Watatsuki's because Toyotama-hime, the basis of Toyohime, can morph into a Sea Dragon as well in the legend.

>Oh, and we're talking Susano-o, as well? Well then, let's not forget that his wife Kushinada-hime is the basis for our own Minoriko Aki. Yet another reason not to anger the harvest god.

Susanoo and Minoriko Aki are entirely different topic. That's why I said Minoriko can't be Uke Mochi because she's the Goddess of Raw Harvest like Kushinada-hime.

>And finally, I do agree with the idea of Sarutahiko-no-Okami being lord of all Earth Spirits, but also note, he has links to the Tengu as well, and is even referenced in Aya's spells.

Yes, and her name is Iwanaga-hime. Immortal and powerful, but ugly as rock according to Ninigi, whom chose to marry her more beautiful sister, Konohana Sakuya, instead.

That's why there's a term "Human lives are said to be short and fleeting, like the sakura blossoms, instead of enduring and long lasting, like stones."

From LoLK Sanae's ending:

'Back at the Moriya Shrine, Sanae is busy writing her report to Kanako Yasaka about what happened. After she finished, Kanako read Sanae's report, which was only 80% true. When they finished talking about the report, the conversation quickly turned into one about Sagume Kishin, with Kanako saying if she's the Sagume, then the lunarians are akin to the heavenly gods. Afterwards, Kanako went into thinking. Since some of the lunarians had divine lineages, and they were going to come down to Earth (although reluctantly), it would be like the second coming of the Divine Emperor. Although Sanae didn't know this, a native god preventing such an event deserved to be praised. Kanako then though, "This girl really does have it in her".'

Apparently there's a background story between Hata Kawakatsu (Kokoro) and Larva (Tokoyo no Kami) :

The cult of Tokoyo already exists since year 644 in Suruga province. It was lead by a (pic-related) shaman named Ōbe no Ō (大生部多). The moment this cult spread to the Capital, it caused chaos among the society since the cult member sell their own property to this cult, regardless of their well-being. Hata no Kawakatsu take it as a duty to subdue destroy the cult (Probably under the orders of Matarajin aka Okina).

>> No.18346247

True that both are Shinto deities, but there's three types of them. There is Amatsukami, the gods of Heaven, which are conflated with Lunarians. There is Kunitsukami, the gods of the Earth, which are beings like Minoriko. And then there are the spirits of all things, the Myriad Gods, of which Shinrei, or divine spirits, are those people which are praised to become proper deities.

For Kanako, she is based from the Amatsukami named Yasakatome, but has also been said to be as a Shinrei by Akyuu and ZUN.

>> No.18346512

>>18345358
Hata no Kawakatsu is also often associated with Matarajin him(her)self, being seen as one of his incarnation or even pretty much him in person. This is referenced in some Matara's spellcards and ZUN's interviews also made the connection to be intentional.

>> No.18346716

Kanako is based partly on Yasakatome (i.e. in name) but mostly on Suwa-Myojin.

Understanding that there's a difference between the myriad gods and divine spirits worshiped as gods, the natural question that follows is why Kanako is a divine spirit while Suwako is a myriad god. This is what leads into the discussion of the nature of those two myths; the old native Suwa god was Moreya, who did not have some sort of clear historical origin (i.e. just kind of made up by locals because reasons); meanwhile the god Suwa-Myojin worshiped in Suwa and said to have defeated Moreya is now identified as Takeminakata. "Suwa-Myojin" has a couple additional stories of origin as its own thing depending on region and time period, and Takeminakata is full of chunky historical conflation, being intrinsically tied to the Yamato rule, which was of course political and very human.

Also included in this is the fact that in the Suwa region itself, the god "Takeminakata" was basically never historically worshiped as such, and instead it's the Mishaguji that were commonly the target of worship and active role in rituals. This is alluded to by ZUN by having Kanako being "unable to control" the Mishaguji, which were the main cultural targets of reverence and fear at the time, and having Suwako be the one to control the Mishaguji while Kanako takes the face of leading the region. This is kind of how Takeminakata is seen today, being the "official" god but getting to that point by being slapped on and conflated with other myths to get there. In fact, this is arguably the justification for Kanako existing at all, because similarly to Miko, it's possible that scholarly criticism of Takeminakata's legitimacy is why ZUN chose to "move" them into Gensokyo.

>There is Kunitsukami, the gods of the Earth, which are beings like Minoriko. And then there are the spirits of all things, the Myriad Gods, of which Shinrei, or divine spirits, are those people which are praised to become proper deities.
Not quite; myriad gods do encompass both Amatsukami and Kunitsukami, but it's more useful as a term referring just to the kami that inhabit all "things". Divine spirits in contrast are the essence of spirits that may ascend to godhood when worshiped and are categorically not treated as myriad gods in Touhou.

Kaguya's power can very likely cancel that.

DOUBLE WHAT
Reimu hates them so much? Like, she's not annoyed but straight up hates them?
Also Flandre was finally mentioned again.

Quoted not word by word:
>One sip makes you immune to growing and aging. The second sip cures all imperfections and illnesses, making you immune to them. The third sip makes you truly immortal.
You could consider the aftermath of mental torture either a mind imperfection or a mind illness, so you can still suffer it in the moment but become immune to any other effect.
However, the following is written only in the touhou.wikia and I can't search for sources right now:
>Drinkers become an existence completely independent of even the concept of reality, thus making one not subject to the bounds of life, death, or even manipulation. (nourishment such as food, water, or sleep does not impact her body at all), This makes them completely indestructible, and it extends to their mental and spiritual states just as much as their physical state.
In this case, the user would be initially susceptible yet she could train, suffer or adapt over (infinite) time, ultimately ignoring it.

If Kisshoten being the mother Jo'on is true, then no wonder she was held at Myouren Temple in the end of AoCF. Her father is pissed and told Byakuren to bring her into the temple for punishment time.

Unknown as of yet, but since they're afraid of being even close to humans not many will be willing to go to Earth so I don't think it's likely.

But like another anon said, they probably have the moral capability to do something like that.

How would a family tree for the european branch of gods in touhou be? At least the pagan ones, as they all pretty much stem from indo-european myth.
Perkwunos has some connections to Thor, through Finnish myth, and Dyeus has some connection to greek mythology, possibly where Zeus stems from for example. Gods are born from human thought, after all.
