alphes was great almost solely because he was the best of a bad lot and could easily be plugged into a game. The only alternative official Touhou art at the time of his popularity was manga stuff by the likes of Aki Eda or from more esoteric works. But since then the alternatives have gotten better and wormed their way into games, ZUN's gotten better, and alphes meanwhile fell off a cliff with his eyelashbrows and t-rex arms. Why anyone continues to hang on, I don't know.
