Why is Japan so close minded about power sockets?

they would be if they had the third earth/safety prong as well (you can get adapters for that)

China sockets look like an upside down tortured ghost that you can only appease by sticking electronics in and in return they give you electricity.

>> No.1792180

Yeah the Chinese one is compatible with Type A (old American, China, Japan), Type C (Euro) and Type I (Australian/New Zealand). And it's easy enough to find adopter for Type B (new American) and Type G (British + commonwealth) in China. I tried to find a Type I to Type A converter in Japan and I couldn't find it anywhere after looking in three huge supermarkets.

I think Type A use to be the standard in China, but then they moved over to Type I for grounded applications, so nowadays most socketboards there come with both Type A and Type I for backward compatibility with older devices. The one in the pic has Type B as a bonus

>> No.1793542

雷 is thunder.
電 is electricity or lightning.

>> No.1793546

>>1793534
Because 雷電 together means lightning. 雷 refers to the thunder (you know the sound) and 電 refers to the flash of light. They got told that that flash of light is basically the same stuff that makes light bulbs glow, so 電 took on the additional meaning of electricity.

>> No.1793554

>>Why is Japan so close minded about power sockets?
they aren't close-minded, its just people in other countries need to be protected from their stupidness of shocking themselves to death. the third pronge is for stupid-people countries. so when you see a house with 3-pronge sockets, you can say "hey, stupid people live here".

>> No.1793653

>>1793622
The third prong doesn't protect people from shocking themselves to death by stupidity, it prevents faulty appliances from shocking them to death due to shoddy manufacture.

>> No.1793660

>>1793653
Of course, since Japanese electronics are SUPERIOR, they probably don't NEED protection from shoddy appliances.

>> No.1793662

But they always have their washers and dryers exposed to the elements.

>> No.1793663

Fucking Japan; it was such a bitch to find a socket for my laptop. If I'd known that three-prongs weren't common, I'dve bought an adapter beforehand.

But at least it gave me an excuse to go to Akiba as soon as possible.

>> No.1793672

Errm, also polarized plugs? So engineers know which line will be the live wire and which would be neutral?

>> No.1793698

>>1793653
Then we can assume the third prong is for plug fixation instead of earthing?

>> No.1793703

>>1793660
Actually, Japan has sockets for three prong plugs as well. Refrigerators, air-conditioners, they tend to have a third prong (or sometimes a separate cable) for earthing.

>> No.1793714

>>1792180
That's why you get one before you go. But you better make sure whatever you are plugging in is compatible with 110V 50/60Hz they have there as opposed to the 230V 50Hz that is here.

>> No.1793730

>>1793698
The adapters usually ground the third prong to the inner case of the socket via the screw that holds the cover plate on

>> No.1793743

The earth wire (known as ground in American English) is only intended to carry electric current when the connected equipment develops an insulation (safety) fault, and should otherwise never carry a current. It is generally connected to metal cases and other parts of the equipment which may come into contact with humans. Electromagnetic interference filters and surge protectors dispose of unwanted electric charges via the earth wire.

Also for polarising so you don't switch the neutral wire and leave internal components energised.

Fucking fail 2 prong non-polarised wall sockets without switches

>> No.1793818

No. It's just 雨 + 电
Rain (Later for water-related weather phenomena) + [Original] (Now as a simplified variant for 電 itself)

>> No.1794233

>>1793730

"The adapters usually ground the third prong to the inner case of the socket via the screw that holds the cover plate on"

^^ If this is correct, then the 2-cock Japanese plug has the same safety as a 3-cock with an earth thingy-magig

UK plugs have to be good since the electrical grid is so shoddy. They have to integrate a fuse directly in the male plug since the ultra-unsafe grid sometimes bring high voltage current directly to homes.
