Last I knew, Steam games don't necessarily have to have DRM. Developers can distribute through the service without baking the Steam client shit into their games, which can then be played independent of the client. Maybe that's changed recently, though?

>Why not have it somewhere DRM free?

ZUN can do that there if he wants to. Steam supports DRM-less games, but most devs opt for basic DRM. I remember copying my Civ 4 folder to another PC and it worked just fine without Steam.

That's one thing, but I'm sure it's UI will put them
I still think, even though there might be a little spike in activity, it won't lead to a Renaissance (Or just Naissance, I guess) of western touhou fans.
There are plenty of Touhou mods/skins/workshop items floating around on Steam, any 12 y/o gmodder or Civilization player would have noticed Touhou factions or models in the workshops by now; if they didn't look further into touhou then, I doubt stumbling across HSIFS will sell them on buying it, unless they already knew what it was.
Even compared to the games released on PS4, STGs are not only hard, but obscure, so I think that unless marketing, Steam, Youtubers or otherwise, hype it up, nothing will really change.
>>17850883

To briefly advocate on behalf of poorfags:
I might just buy it on Steam to support ZUN. I've been pirating the games for forever, and cannot afford the trip Japan to pick up the physical games. Although I would still be buying it through an intermediary, the Gabe tax is probably cheaper than a secondary redistributor's x3 mark-up.
At least this way, I'll know ZUN is collecting some hussle from foreign sales.

>> No.17850950

>>17850915
I'm not sure if steam_api is THE DRM, because all games I currently have installed have it. But it most likely is, and so you at least won't have to run the game after buying and installing it to know.

>is there any way of telling if a steam game has DRM or not
http://steam.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_DRM-free_games
Q: How do you determine if a game or software is launcher-free on Steam?
A: Install the game or software and run it online the first time (this step is important as this finalizes the installation). Shut down Steam and temporarily move all the files in the root Steam folder somewhere else, and rename/delete Steam.exe to something else temporarily. Locate game folder, find the program launcher .exe and run it. If the game doesn't start, then it requires the client to be running; if the game starts, the game is launcher free.
So no, you'll have to buy it. But like anon said, you can always refund, and Steam has it so that refunds automatically go through if you played a game for less than 2 hours.

I doubt it. Touhou Project is ZUN's IP and he won't let that go, since he basically uses the game to produce music and pretty bullet patterns. It's a passion project more than a marketable game as a "service". I fully expect the project to die when he dies, because nobody else can create the same feeling game like ZUN. Anything left of the series after that will be fan works/games, with the community basically holding the entire series and encouraging a few new people to try the game. There is no such thing as "intrinsic quality", only contextual value. I'm frankly with him, Touhou had a special place in my heart because of the unique ecosystem it thrived in. It had unprecedented popularity and maintained resolute independence by remaining as a doujin good.

But the cracks started appearing, collaborations with larger teams, ever increasing amounts of tie-in works, fighting game releases on Playstation's "Doujin Space", with exclusive characters. and now this. All this does is turn the question I always had after a new release sour. "What's next?" isn't asking what sort of theme or characters the next game will have, it's asking how much further the dignity this series had is going to decline.

What's next? Mainline games being made in a studio? A mobage? Anime? Those are all things people will say "won't ever happen" but the same used to be said about steam releases. And here we are.

I know ZUN bitched and moaned about being a true doujin artist or whatever trashing on Steam and now he's pretending that never happened, but the move itself isn't bad.

People who can't pay extra just to get a physical copy can now support the series, and don't give me the "you're just paying steam" excuse, because unless you buy directly at comiket it's going to be the same as buying from a Japanese retail shop.
People begged for a way to throw money at ZUN, so the west can finally support him instead of being filthy pirates who only spam shitty memes.

Most importantly, the multiplayer games finally have a chance of getting decent netplay, hopefully.

>JS: How do you feel about foreign fans creating patches to translate your games into English?

>ZUN: I don’t have a problem with it at all. Obviously, since I can’t speak English, I can’t make the games in English. It’s great, it lets more people play the games. I’m very grateful.

>JS: Are you worried about the quality?

>ZUN: I can’t tell but I think that, actually, the people who are willing to put in the time and effort to translate it, would do their best. It shows a lot of dedication.

>JS: If a Western publisher of Japanese PC games approached you to officially translate and publish outside Japan, what would you say?

>ZUN: I think if I was approached by something like that, obviously I’d think about it. I’d feel like it would probably be a bit of a bother, and I honestly think I’d probably get sick of the whole process rather quickly. I think it would probably just be a hassle. I would say though, that in terms of would I rather have fan-translations, or a company translate it, I think because Touhou has such a dedicated fan-base, I feel like the fan translations are going to be better than a professional one. I think some of the content of Touhou’s stories and so on, it might be quite difficult even for Japanese speakers to understand, so I feel like, even if it’s translated directly, it won’t make any sense to a lot of people. So I feel like it’s not . . . I’ve been thinking, I might just sell it in the West, in Japanese. I don’t think it’s necessary to speak Japanese to be able to enjoy the game, the artwork, the playing, and so on. Translating stuff takes a long time and can be very difficult.

I didn't know ZUN was so comfortable with fan translations.

As I see it, the best thing will be to buy it on Steam (to give money to ZUN) then proceed playing your normal version that you've got from moriyashrine or somewhere else.

I don't really get it why people are making a big deal out of it. What if it would have DRM? Why does it have higher system requirements than CD version? Would it support thcrap?
It's a game that is destined to be bought and then remain never launched because you have a better version.

The only point in Steam release is to give ZUN money. Not to get the game.
If you think piracy is bad, then you buy Steam version, then download normal version. You bought the game, you're playing it. Everything's fair.

You have a point here.
If you don't want to support developers who use DRM (have a moral issue) then it's entirely valid decision.
However, what I'm talking about are convenience issues. Raising those is a stupid thing because having a Steam version doesn't mean you have to play Steam version. Steam version is for giving ZUN money. Then you're free to play whatever version you want to because the only valid argument against piracy (that developers need financial support) no longer applies.

A big part of the reason I can't stand EoSD's characters and music is because they were bland to begin with. PCB and IN get similarly disproportionate amounts of attention (though notably less than EoSD to be fair), but I don't mind them as much because I actually like those games' characters and music.

Still, I wouldn't want any game to completely overshadow newer ones, and PCB/IN can be guilty of that. I'm fucking tired of Border of Life arrangements even if I like it.

From MoTK:

Original Interview Text

Rough Translation
Q: There is an insider's rule that one can release Touhou derivative works to the platform as long as ZUN implemented it first. (Now that ZUN implemented Touhou on Steam), is there a possibility on having Touhou derivative works on Steam?

ZUN: I'm sure it can come. Now that I think about it, there were a lot of requests that they wanted to release their derivative works on Steam. Now that I first made my move, I'm sure there's no big problems, is how I think about it.

Q: Then, if there are Touhou dervative circles willing, Steam release is possible?
ZUN: I'll let them decide on that. From my side, there are no problems.

How did it kill VNs? Bringing them to a wider audience is hardly the destruction of a genre.

Or, if you are talking about all of the utter tripe (e.g. Winged Cloud's Sakura ____ fare), then that's hardly the fault of Steam. Nor, can you pretend that utter tripe didn't exist before VNs came to Steam.

Score files are stored in your user's AppData folder, and does not depend on where the game is installed.
