17790004 No.17790004 [Reply] [Original]

>Premise is that a guy has been reincarnated as a baby, and actually focuses on her growing up
>Go in expecting cute SOL shit
>First novel has MC meet an OP fairy whose main job is to provide needless exposition and fawn over how cute the MC is
>Half of the chapters focus on magical power (temp)
>The equivalent of four volumes have passed and the MC is still only two years old
>Closest thing to conflict in the series is the MC trying to mofumofu his maids

Why did Nigotta fall off the wagon so quickly?

>There is an extended plot here regarding slavery in this world, which I was less happy with. I accept that slavery in this fantasy world does not carry with it the baggage that it does in our own world, and that it seems to be more indentured servitude. But both Souma and the author seem to treat slavery as an intellectual problem to be solved, rather than as a monstrous evil. This is not unique to the isekai realm, of course, and I should be grateful that the protagonist doesn’t simply say “oh, slavery exists here” and shrug his shoulders like some others. It does add to my biggest beef with this series: it can be as dispassionate as its hero is, and as I’ve said before, seems like it’s one of those “dark/grey/independent” fics you always saw in Harry Potter written by teenagers who wondered what the world would be like if everything were more badass. I like books to be fiction. I am less happy when they are thought experiments.

The title of the series is literally "The Realist Hero's Kingdom Reform Chronicles".
The comment was quoting the reviewer's line about "why aren't they treating it as a MONSTROUS EVIL" by pointing out that this thus ignoring the fundamental premise: that the MC approaches things from a realist perspective
i.e. there is no point in spending paragraphs raging about slavery being LITERALLY EVIL and also instantly emancipating all the slaves will bring the economy crashing down and costing him all his political capital.

>> No.17800607

I can understand his concern, though. It ultimately depends on the context of the slavery. If it's like the South, where their economy was built on slaves maintaining cash crops, abolishing slavery without any alternative (say, automation) would cause conflict. But if it's the traditional Middle Age/isekai slavery, which consists of political prisoners, war spoils, and indebted people being used as servants and sex slaves, there's less of a risk abolishing it.

>> No.17800793

>>17800607
Eh, abolishing that type of slavery completely is bound to cause issues anyways since it removes a market. The protagonist of Realist Hero already set up the conditions for it to be more humane though, and at the rate the kingdom is going, that even that type is bound to disappear naturally in a few hundred years without the politicians having to do much. The guy just has to make sure the demons aren't turned into one big slave class after they are defeated.

>> No.17800871

>>17800607
It's a standard isekai slavery, but IIRC the MC's plan is to nationalize the entire slave trade, shut down the shitty operators, and provide state-funded vocational training to existing slaves to aid them in finding high value employment (there's a shortage of skilled labour in certain departments like accounting and stuff) and eventually purchasing their freedom and gainful employment. Or something like that.

>“I’ve heard that, yeah...” I said. “I can only see those as stupid plans, though.”

>“Are they stupid plans?” Jirukoma asked.

>“Yeah. First off, sending them to the front lines is the stupidest plan of all. National defense is the basis of any state. If they’re entrusting that to foreigners, eventually they’re going to end up facing a serious national crisis.”

>There had been many examples of this in Earth’s history. For instance, the Western Roman Empire during the Migration Period had tried to use the Germanic peoples who had settled peacefully in the empire to deal with the Germanic invaders, and they’d centered their forces around German mercenaries. As a result, their armies had become Germanicized, and they’d been destroyed by the Germanic mercenary commander Odoacer.

>Also, in the Chinese Tang dynasty, giving power to An Lushan, who had been of Sogdian and Göktürk origins, had led to a rebellion which had shortened the life of the country.

That's not how the An Shi Rebellion worked at all. The rebellion didn't happen because he was Turkic, it happened because there was a guy at court who kept trying to backstab him and convince the emperor he was a rebel, blocking his promotions, having his friends arrested and executed, and trying to entrap him to come to the capital so he could do god know's what to him.

And the real problem with the Roman army's Germanization wasn't with the recruitment of Germanic people who had settled peacefully and actually been integrated into the Empire and Romanized, it was when they allowed entire tribes of Goths to be imported wholesale into the Empire and keep their tribal structures intact, fighting as entire mercenary nations with loyalties to their own kings; rather than the previous integration rulebook of immigrant tribes being being broken up, spread across the empire, and properly integrated, combined with the problem the Roman army always had of troops being more loyal to their generals than to Rome itself.

I always find translations to be inferior to the original language. The translator will always put a spin on the text, and especially in light novels I think the tropes and writing style would feel awkward in English.

And I don't really think it's "X story in modern setting," it's more of, "Books contain lessons that we can use in our lives." I mean, the stories ARE based on famous novels in a way, but it's more than that. I'm about to finish the third volume and I'm really enjoying it. I can't say if you would like the series, but I think it's pretty interesting how the characters see themselves in books and learn to grow or face their own problems.

>There's almost something
Always something.
For example, a mainsteam one. You know the House MD show? Well, in the original English, House refers to everyone as "you", which is pretty neutral.
In the french subtitles, they translated it as "tu", which is kinda like "thou", so really familiar, while all the other characters use "vous", which is like "thee", more polite and formal unless I fucked it badly and mistook them. Then, in the French dub, everyone uses "vous", which denotes respect.

See my point? English doesn't have as many adjectives, so the relationships between characters can be completely misunderstood.
The opposite is also true, when you go from Japanese or Korean (who have a gazillion expressions for people to talk to each others) to English (who only has "You"), there's some loss.

So J-Novel licensed two Horror themed Light Novels for Halloween.

Ao Oni
>Shun is the new kid in school, but he’s already managed to attract the attention of the school bully, who’s now making his life a living hell. It doesn’t seem like things could get any worse, until the night he finds himself and a group of his classmates inside a creepy, abandoned mansion known as the Jailhouse. They quickly start to hear strange sounds and see weird things, but everything escalates when they realize they can’t get out. Once they’re trapped inside, a blue, unnaturally large figure chases after them. Is it a new species? Or is it the ghost of their old classmate who died in an accident? Nobody knows, but one thing is for certain... If it catches them, they’re dead! The scariest game of tag in history begins!

Yume Nikki: I Am Not in Your Dream
>Based on the cult hit game, the novelization of Yume Nikki follows a lonesome girl into the bizarre dreamscapes that await her when she falls asleep. Opening doors and wandering aimlessly, is she really as alone as she thinks?

Paperwhite has higher resolution than the original kindle (very important if you want to do manga, possibly important for general Japanese text rendering). The light honestly makes the screen a lot more comfortable to read and of course makes it so you can read without a light. It's a pretty big price jump, but I'm extremely happy with my paperwhite so far. I just wish I could have bought the "manga edition" they have in Japan.

You can see the title and that little diamond is not centered anymore when it actually should be. I tried it in Lithium and the format is fixed there. I checked the original format as well by the publisher and it actually is fine. The only problem happens when it's in Moon+.

It pisses me off because Lithium doesn't have Justify yet.

Tried it in Prestigio and it's actually nice there. The problem is that if the words don't complete in a certain line, instead of moving the word down, it will actually hyphen it instead which is retarded.

Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi

>The series centers on a female college student named Aoi, who inherited the ability to see spirits from her late grandfather. Aoi prides herself on her cooking, and one day she's feeding some agricultural spirits when suddenly a god and the master of the "Tenshinya" (Heavenly Inn) appears and takes Aoi away. The tl;dr version is that the translation sucked but nobody noticed for a while and by the time they did it was too late.

The long version is that the original translator (Platfleece)'s work was so wildly inaccurate as to be borderline fanfiction, but the stuff he wrote tracked just barely closely enough with the events of the anime that the bulk of the (non-JP-literate) fandom didn't notice in spite of repeated warnings from moonreaders and chinkreaders that something was wrong.

We're talking shit like this:

Chinkanon:
>The sound of underground movement was now far away, but Clamberry did not give chase. Rather than chasing down a beaten dog, her priority was to deal with her present circumstances. She could no longer hear the sound of an angel’s wings overhead.
>Clamberry moved carefully. Despite her wariness, she moved in a way that concealed it from others, with a natural ease. She walked around the algae-encrusted trees and stepped over low-growing shrubs. She swung over a valley on a vine. She was getting closer. There were several notes of tension in her heartbeat. Given the effective time of the Vitality Medicine, she would have to make an attack now. Dropping her pretense, Clamberry stepped into a patch of vegetation and stabbed her right hand into a rock without any warning. After impaling the human-sized rock with her right hand, she raised it and slammed it heavily onto the ground.

Plat:
>She had listened to the scratches underground. They weren’t chasing her or coming towards her. In fact, it looked like the noises were moving away from her.
>Suddenly, a large rock began flying in the air towards Clamberry. Fast. Durable. This wasn’t a normal rock.
>The rock kept hitting her.
>It was fast. The arm, then the back, then it flew over to her shoulder.
>Clamberry focused on the movements, her reflexes are far too fast for the rock to anticipate, and calmly, she aimed her fist at the incoming rock."

When they did finally wake up and realized that everything from the novel translations to the interview translations was bullshit there was a huge shitstorm about it, but by then the translator had garnered a legion of drones to defend him and his "efforts" and the inaccuracies had infected the wiki (of which Plat was the admin), and he was stubborn enough that even anon who attempted to help proofread his work had most of his proposed changes rejected. He continued to cover up his lies with even more lies (claiming that he had "translated from memory" and that he would fix everything with a v2) and then retreated to discord where his drones continue to suck his dick.

/a/ meanwhile scraped together a chinkanon and a moonreader to do proper re-translations from the Chinese version checked against the JP raw. As can be seen from the image and this one, even this J>C>E translation is still far better than Plat's garbage.

There is also an amusing coda to this story, where one of the fans mistook J-Novel Club for a fan translation group and tried to beg them to pick up Mahoiku before realizing that they were actually legit (Slow Press had already licensed it by this time and nobody wanted to deal with their schedules). Then later they learned that J-Novel Club actually bid for the license but were too late.

To this day, the shitty Platfleece translations are still the most widely circulated ones, with only /a/ for the most part being aware of the retranslation effort. The only silver lining to this story is that the Yen Press translator turned out to be of decent quality.

People generally don't read things twice. pure text, e.g. wns and unvoiced games, is a medium where there's nothing for the ones who know to reference against. Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki. Whether it's good or bad depends on what you want I suppose. Personally I dropped it halfway through in disgust over some major changes the writer made in how he wanted to handle a certain aspect of the story. But if all you really care about is the slow crafting/exploring/SOL stuff it was good.

Just don't read it if you care about romance at all. After 3 volumes or so the author decided the main heroine was cramping his style and axed her for the rest of the story to switch over to a 'random sluts of the arc' format.

It's a random idea by a forum member from a thread long ago and it has been stuck on my head since so i had to draw some bits of it.

Story goes like:
*~20+ year old ordinary college student part timer or maybe full time
*got a mysterious delivery order to transport items to a place that the driver is unfamiliar of, seems to cause him to be transported to the other world, the client is a mystery
*After some bits of investigation, he learns that the items he needed to delivery are in isekai, kingdoms that part take in taking down the demon lord needed these relics/items/weapons in order to have a chance to defeat the demon lord (this can have major twist later on). THis becomes his main quest and spans major arcs and he believes he can return to his home world once the delivery is done.
*he takes side quests along the way to earn coins, meet and interact with various dwellers, learn more about the world and take party members/guards.
*probably str based and crafting based, also wide area detection skill to be bale to pinpoint locations during isekai delivery
*truck probably became magical, a sacred item that can be repaired with crafting skills and runs o other means other than gasoline
*is upgraded later on to take on more demanding tasks based on how high crafting skill is (imagine them trucks in Mad Max)
*partners up with an orc(!?) who carries them loads (maybe orc was discarded from is clan or discarded slave or something and he took him in) is loyal to him
*parties up with that young mage (that red hair girl), that truck kun fated meeting and got curious about mc and his truck (that page 1)
*parties of with a female elf (maybe dark or brown elf ranger?) because she owes truck guy big time (from a side quest has twist later on)
*elf girl is in bad terms with orc because you know them orc elf dojins, became part of a running gag of the series
*orc has no interest in elf, and wtf is she saying orcs being lewd like that.
* elf and mage became like guards protecting the delivery caravan from bandits and other monsters during delivery (orc doubles as carrier and the sword//tank/axe guy)
*sometimes sent to the frontlines (perhaps an ongoing war with other country or demon army) to deliver precious rations and resources
*rear truck carriage may be turn to something else to be able to carry people and other creatures, but primarily is a delivery truck
* can sometimes party with other people, for those unknown areas
* loli knight (or rather former knight) didn't make the illustration and joins the party later on as she partakes on one of the major story arcs.

I dropped a novel a week ago. Can't remember the name, but it was supposed to be about an older MC wizard who was supposed to have terrible luck and be somewhat evil because of the hardships he's gone through from his bad luck. The synopsis says he randomly meets 2 girl adventurers on his travel and gets roped into defeating the demon lord or some shit.

>first chapter is him in a cave raping the Chief's daughter he kidnapped from the village
>the 2 adventurer girls are actually bounty hunters to kill the Mc and bring the girl back
>Mc tricks them into a trap, abducting one adventurer and raping her and using rape magic to make her his sex slave (she can't harm him and must do what he says). The other adventurer fell deep into the trap and was raped by many large flies/bees/insects
>the Mc and his new sex slave go out to find her friend, but realized she got away so they have sex in the insect's nest
That's where I dropped it. You guys ever read something expecting generic situations and adventure, bit end up just getting 80% shitty porn?

Just finished reading Alicization arc of SAO (at least up to volume 17). It took me 6 years to slowly crawl through immensely huge amount of bullshit that 1-8 volumes were (mostly) made of, yet I still kept believing that the things would be better later on. Well, I wasn't particularly wrong, and now I crave for some new long-ass series with a specific set of features:

1. (essential) There should be a significant change in direction of the plot, as the story goes on. No nauseatingly stale things like "let's start with one idiotic goal at volume 1 and work our asses off to achieve it in volume 20".

2. (preferable) Storytelling shouldn't be focused on a main character's perspective. It's fine if the point of view stays the same for a long time, but there should be some healthy change too (even if it's just temporary).

3. (optional) No fucking games. No "what the fuck I'm in a fantasy world" idiocy, at least without proper explanation.

Any good ideas?

I don't know anything about Ghost Hunt so i can't make a comparison, but it varies depending on the character viewpoint. The novels are fairly experimental for the author but usually follow a format of the three sets of main characters dealing with incidents from different angles.
Shinobu is the high schooler loved by the supernatural mentioned in the preview and usually gets wrapped up in things against his will but manages due to his rather extensive knowledge of youkai. Hayabusa is Shinobu's uncle and a police detective with an aversion to youkai because they naturally love to bully him. He usually deals with things from a more formal police type investigation alongside his more supernaturally inclined underage stalker Enbi. The third set is Enbi's older sister Mai who is completely submerged in the underworld of supernatural dealings and is a freelance spy who takes jobs to resolve incidents with her sidekick the Sunekosuri who is a harmless youkai assigned to keep an eye on her.
The first person narrative annoys some people but I rather like it, and it's fairly with 9 volumes and a few side stories afterward. It's translated by js06 so TL quality isn't an issue either. Somewhat related is the Simple Series by the same author which is a collection of loose ideas he couldn't fit into full works on their own. A Simple Monitoring in particular is really good if you like darker stories.
